I've also read if you use good wire (Lincoln) in your size (Think its .030) you get better looking welds.. Flux cored lincoln wire is like $11 at home depot.

It makes shitty welds, but it creates a solid weld.. For stuff like you did, its perfect! Turn your wirespeed up, and make sure its on high setting, and you will get better looking welds then you have, Not pretty by any means, but more of a solid bead.
