1972 Honda CL175 - First Time build. Help!

Pretty much to just kick start it and make it run until the battery dies. just a wire from the battery to a fuse to switch then to coils. and a ground from frame to battery.

Help!!! I wired everything, and nothing happened.
What are the bare essentials I need to get this engine running?

for starters, how about the rest of the pieces to the carbs?

Read the manual trek posted. I gave about as detailed a description as possible for the starter solenoid, and you still asked what it hooks up to. You need to listen.

Stupid mistake :(

I have the manual and followed the wiring diagram...

Regardless when everything was wired, nothing lit up on the cluster or lights...
Is it recommended I get a new reg/rec ?

Also I need to pick up new spark plugs.

IF it is all connected as per the diagram, start at the battery. Do you have 13 or so volts there with ignition OFF and what do you get with ignition ON? then follow the wiring step by step. Disconnect the wires one at a time and test for 12v all the way to the coils and form there to the points.

I would fit new plugs. The other way to test for spark is to work backwards from the plugs. FLick the points and see if you get a spark. With points closed flick the kill/run switch and watch for sparks. If no sparks, then test the wiring all the way through, fit a new condensor and test the coil for resistance on primary (12v) and secondary (HT) sides and compare to what the book says.

As someone mentioned earlier if you just want to test for sparks, you can connect batter to a switch to coils to points/condenser and see if it sparks. It;'s easier to see sparks on a spark plug tester which you can buy from your local auto shop.

One point (pardon the pun) is that with a double ended coil, both ends must be connected to a plug that is grounded to get a spark. I will not spark if one lead is hanging in fresh air unable to ground.

Stupid question, should I have have the exhaust connected to the engine before trying to start it?

This is my drawn diagram of what I tried to get the engine started today with no luck.

I am waiting on an order that should be here Monday.
-new NGK spark plugs
-new NGK spark plug boots
-multimeter
- and I already installed a brand new ignition coil

When I have my multimeter I will run some test and make sure my starter solenoid, could, starter motor, wires, ect are good and go from there.

When I kick start the engine it sounds like it wants to start so that's a good sign of compression right?

Once again, thanks for putting me up with my stupid questions! I'm still determined to get this bike running!

Why the fuck would you try to start it without the exhaust connected? Just lazy?

This is the most simple bike there is to wire. You just want a magic potion to make it run. It's gonna take effort.

Did you put the fucking carbs together yet? I'm sorry but this is actually painful to watch kid. Read this thread again, go have a cry about it, then get your shit together. That's what I'm gonna do.

Trek, by definition you are now officially insane.

I know, I know, But after 28 years of being an elevator mechanic, Ive had to endure my fair share of "challenged" apprentices.

Who, w a "HEALTHY DOSE OF TOUGH LOVE, ENCOURAGEMENT AND PATIENCE " have turned out to be pretty respectable mechanics themselves.

MattC may very well be a diamond in the rough.

OR NOT. ;)

However Matt, you may want to consider FINANCING a small bike that runs AND HAS A WARRANTY. While learning on this machine.

Something like this..

He's just learning. He's not female.

I say keep at it matt but try harder to figure some things out on your own. I mean city kid or not, having the exhaust pipes hooked up when you run it is almost literally a no-brainer.

This is my favorite beginner bike suggestion. Nevermind where it's made, people used to shun "that jap shit" too. Besides, china makes tons of models for the big four. Believe it.

exactly right. but, too much frustration while learning and a guy is destined to give up. so, atleast this way he could have some fun, while learning.

Plus getting out and about on a running bike. he will start meeting like minded people and gaining resources close to him.

I was referring to Rebel part, not the getting a new bike part. ;)

Yeah. I haven't seen one of those Chinese bikes in person, but my guess is they're put together at least as well as an early '70's Honda. The welds on my CL100's frame are not pretty.

lol, or one of those Yamaha sr400 like Breena had in Kentucky. that is a pretty darn neat bike. They got one used here at my honda dealer. Its a very good looking starter machine. A little more $.

Installed new spark plug boots, the coils are brand new, battery is brand new.
Tested the solenoid and it's good.
Wired everything according to diagram except brake light and signal, I'm waiting on those.

And still, nothing...
When I press the electric start button I don't hear a sound.
Even sprayed some starting fluid, And I'm kick starting till my leg falls off.
Very frustrated, but im going to keep trying till I figure it out...

Question- Assuming everything is wired correctly and I have battery, when I turn the ignition key regardless if the engine is running I should at least get a neutral light on correct?
Also when you turn key on this bike does the headlight turn on, or is that only if the engine is running?
