1972 Jawa 250 Californian - Rust Machine

It felt a bit like Christmas today as I picked up 15kg of Czech republic parts from the post office.

First up was the VAPE 12v electronic ignition.

Next up is a sad little post :(

Yesterday was bitter sweet.

Piston on. Check.
Gudgeon and circlips in. Check.
Rings on. Check
Lightly oil cylinder. Check.

Slide cylinder down and get two rings under the lip. Won't move any further.

Then the day turned bad.
Gently, seriously gently used rubber mallet to help cylinder down.

Next I hear two noises:
- recently Tig welded fin breaks again
- second ring breaks.

Boo hiss. Time to order another ring.

Brodie, sadly yes. A bit more next time. Ah well onto something else while I wait for them to come in.

Is it worth putting rings on then putting it in the freezer pre next attempt?

New ring arrived and is installed. Much easier this time with the help of a ring compressor.

I repaired the cylinder fin and resprayed it in the black barrel paint.

Piston and cylinder all installed
Left side cover bolted on.

Next step - electricals.

Carb all installed. Love the lines of this thing.

Points replaced with electronic unit.

Next onto getting the reg/rec and other bits.

Still haven't got the tank back from the electroplaters yet either :( I wouldn't have thought it takes three months to strip and rechrome two sides on a simple tank. Anyhoo...

Damn that motor looks sleek. Just call up and hassle them about the tank parts. Shouldn't take that long.

They tell me I'll get the tank back on Friday. I will believe it when I see it.

Haha yeah which Friday is the real question. Hopefully it will be this month.

You are a bad man Brodie!

I just called and they said late today / early next Monday. Closer, but still no guarantees.

Just checked in on the guy that's pushing the sleeve back in the frame/swingarm and that's a few weeks away too. I hate waiting...

If only I'd had a 10 ton press in my shed to do it myself, or even not bothered removing it. First build mistakes. Cest la vie.

Is Brodie always right? So it wasn't Tuesday and oh no not Wednesday. "Should" be done Thursday, this Thursday.

Aaargh...

Fingers crossed mate. Nothing worse then being give a date only for it not to be ready and given another...

Hopefully it will be this month at least.

Just called. I bet you can't guess that answer. That's right, he says "Monday" but this is the first time he sounded even a little remorseful.

I went to pick up the tank yesterday. And it wasn't finished. So my wife and I waited and watched as he did it. And when it came out of the chrome bath it looked awesome. But there was a problem.

When he put it in the rinse bath the chrome wasn't sticking. We watched him do the whole process again and it still didn't work.

Every time it came it looked gold. Nice but no dice.

So we left it there with a promise from him that it would be done today.
