1973 XL175 Vitamin C Hell Ride

Very nice build. I love the old XLs. Recently picked up 2 of my own. How's your's holding up since the build?

Holding up well. I've had a few electric kinks to work out, but all in all it's been a blast. I beat the hell out of this bike off road, and it holds up to the task. Just got home from the Spring Thaw and did some mountain trail riding...

Welcome back Eric, glad to see you made it thru the weekend ok.

Looks like you had fun.

I didn't come back unscathed. Kentucky had some rough and rocky terrain. I broke a fairing mount. Gotta make mo betta mounts. Luckily, I could just deinstall the fairing and ride without it. The LEDs mounted on the triple came in handy. With all the rain, the rubber boot for the H4 headlight was filling with water so I had it disconnected anyway.

Still....purdy darn good looking bike.

Still street worthy, at least.

Maybe next year........maybe next year.

Looks like a normal day of spring woods riding, creeks are running, slick and muddy hills... it's roost yer buddy time fun!

Yessir! It was a blast. We didn't have the opportunity to go with this year, but met some guys that meet up at a local store every morning and run all the dirt roads and trails. Next year will hopefully be double the fun.

did you need to get an ORV sticker or a spark check for Kentucky?
No. Kentucky requires no registration for ORV's. As many unregistered off road vehicles as there were on the roads up there, it seems they're pretty lenient when it comes to the ORV's. Most of the roads and trails those guys ride are National Forest service roads and trails.

Just did a little baffling on the XL exhaust in hopes to find some low end. Some of the terrain in Kentucky required me to work the clutch and throttle to get the revs up to power over.

I split the seam on the baffle as it came, and coned it to taper the end down to 1".

I packed around it and filled the can with steel wool. Turns out it makes a huge difference. A few dB quieter and much better off the throttle. It may even do a wheelie now.

thats awesome !! a reverse cone at the end may be worth testing as well

Same baffle, just coned it to 1" at the inlet. It toned it down a little bit- maybe 5 dB or so. More importantly, it really helped low end power. I can wheelie this bike pretty easily, where before was difficult.

I found a really good headlight that works if you're willing to do a little retrofitting. The price is cheap enough, so I think it's worth the trouble. I installed it on my XL, which is a 6v system, but the light is rated for 6v - 30v. I have a projector lamp from a BMW. The twist mount is the same diameter as the back of this lamp, so I cut out the the back of the reflector with the led, then shaped the edges to match the twist mount:

The LED is set up with the appropriate circuit board that can also be snapped out of the reflector as one unit.

I need to snap a pic as installed and upload it.

The light can be found at: http://www.12vmonster.com/collections/lighting-6-volt-led-light-bulbs-dc-12v-24v-lamps
