1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting FULL PROFILE SHOTS 12/10

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike ROLLING AGAIN!

why thank you!
I appreciate the kind words!

I need to get pictures up with the NEW TANK and controls!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike ROLLING AGAIN!

well, my new tank is painted, and I managed to reassemble it without any scratches

SV650 controls are mounted, I just have to figure out how to get the honda cables on the SV throttle, or get custom SV cables to work.

Working on figuring out the wiring, I was going to try to keep this thing pretty close to stock as far as the frame and wiring were concerned, now, i am pretty sure I will strip down the wiring harness, and chop the pass peg mounts and the stud for the stock peg on the right, as it is interfering with the rearsets

crappy cell pic attached!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting CLOSE???

Cool man! I bet the cb200 tank makes the engine look huge!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike ROLLING AGAIN!

Yeah thats a realllly nice colour bro! I considered going with a variation of it (maybe a cross between that orange and a root beer pearl)... I ended up going with an oriental blue pearl with a white undercoat but I do really like the orange! Do it so I can live vicariously (sp?) through you.

ok, with the new tank, will probably be a new color. I could never get the blue to work well on metal parts for some reason...

I'm officially in lust with this color

hah, that is an understatement! BUT, overall, I think it makes the bike look way more streamlined other than the wide bars.
too bad i like the wide bars, because it would look sweet with some clipons

man, I love it, but I decided to stay with the blue. I tried out some different oranges, but they don't really have any depth, if you look closely at that car, there are actually 3 or 4 shades in the paint....I know that I can't recreate that, so I got some more blue and painted the tank up that way :)

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting CLOSE???

If you like wide bars than maybe a wider tank would give a more integrated look to the whole thing. I love that Manx seat but it's all round and the tank is "square" and the wheels I don't like (it's a taste thing - we don't all like the same things).

Crazy idea here, but take a look at seventies AMA Superbikes. They look awesome with wide bars and are the next generation of street race reps. That might be a look that works better and works better for you. Sometimes combining parts and looks for different eras works and sometimes the parts don't work right together. It happens to me all the time. I like a certain tank or seat or whatever and when I put them on the bike, they just don't flow. One of my projects went through 4 seats and 3 tanks and finally I realized I wanted two very different looks, so I'm now up to my eyeballs in two builds.

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting CLOSE???

at this point....I am stuck with what i have....I have spent too much money on it...maybe some day I will make a seat, but I still like the way it looks....who knows WHAT it is any more lol

the best part is, all of the hard work is done, the seat and tank can be changed up in the future to completely change the look of the bike!@

Exactly. Projects are never finished. Just think of it as Phase 1 - getting it running and looking good. And then you get to start changing all sorts of things and improving it.

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting CLOSE???

alright...

they are welded on!

Riley (my son) was watching him weld, or supervising as we called it

and a crappy picture of her all welded up, going to clean a few things up and shoot some black on it ASAP

I want to roll this thing outside and get some nice pics before there is snow!

Re: 1975 CB550 F cafe... SV650/Ninja frankenbike getting CLOSE???

a couple of full shots, since I was able to actually move her around today!

I think the front might be a little high :/

I am trying to mock up the right rearset trying to figure out how angled it needs to be so i am not riding the brake....never had a bike with controls like this....

also going to cut off passenger peg tubing, make a strap for the muffler mount, since those tubes get in the way of my rearsets

You can check if the rearsets are in the right zone:
The rule of thumb is to start with the instep/peg vertically below your scrotum.
That would give a good starting point to fine tune from.
The adjustments would be dictated by your conformation and weight distribution
ie long body short legs/ short body long legs
Big arse, short arms, unfeasibly large chin,
and so on.
They look in the right place, junk the frame loops!
I weighed a few tabs I ground off and that added up to 1lb just for pissy little stuff.
;)

thanks for the input!

it feels that it is in about the right place, I just need to get the tubing out of the way so I can actually figure out EXACTLY where to put it....and I need to fab up the brackets too!

I think that looks great! have you thought about lowering the front end a bit to get the frame rails lower to the ground?

thank you!!!

yeah, looking at the pics after I took them, I want to drop the front a little bit, it looks a little high

Man, I wish I could have pulled that color off.....I love it

if you dig up my street fighter built i lowered a set of FZR600 forks they are identical to those... was simple... cut the top spacer 1 inch (or 1.5) then add a spacer under the damper, i like to use heavy duty springs (you can get them at ACE) or you can use a piece of pipe but if you do pop a few holes in it if it covers any of the damper holes

Lookin good. I like the hybrid look of course. You had asked on my wifes thread whether that tank on the cb500 was the stock tank. It is. Its a good tank for the cafe look. It reminds me of a BCR tank a little. It has the resemblance of knee dents in it. Its about 22 inches long.
