1976 CB360t Slightly modded, restored to roadworthiness - Workin' on Beauty

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Oddly enough, we have the same bike, same year, same color, and same placement of ignition switch! LOL Unbelievable!

The late model 360 with the stripe around the tank, rather than the Honda swoosh is uncommon

I do like the " candy sapphire blue color.

Crazy, Makes me think Honda maybe had 2 different assembly lines doing 2 different things.
Mine was also a 76, sapphire blue, w stripe. Ignition switch mounted under tank on frame bracket. Of all things to change, I cant imagine why, that, halfway through a year.

Have you, by chance, found a spray fan of a color that comes close to matching the Candy Sapphire Blue? From my research, the only thing I can find is from that vintage honda paint website and it is prohibitively expensive.

Rust oleum has a metallic blue that people say is close on color. I bought a can and will take a pic tonight. I haven't used it yet, and since I found side covers in blue. I am not going to yet.

Trek- my ignition switch was under the tank. I bought the bracket and moved it. Back in 1980 or so. It was a popular mod back then.

Getting so close to a ride, huh? Guess I'll have to get the "blue bomber" 360 up and running too! We almost have enough blue 360s to start an MC... ;D

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

I am a warmish day and a gallon of gas from a ride.....

Plenty of more things to do to Sophie, but she is roadworthy now (At least test drive worthy....need to shale out the work).

O.K., I believe someone on this site had said this, or maybe on Hondatwins, but either way, I didn't think of it, but I would of gave credit if I remembered.

I have not used it yet either, so I cannot verify how close. But I bought the can in case I needed to paint side covers an approximate color.

Legal disclaimer done:

This is the color I read was close enough :

Wow...that does look decently close. I might have to check it out. Because of you, Im now leaning more towards keeping my bike as stock as possible instead of going café. We'll see. Thanks for the info!

Sure, blame me....LOL.

I am going as stock as possible, with only minor mods that someone (Like me) would of done, say in 1980.

I do not have the patience or time for a museum piece, I like to look at pictures of Cafe Racers, but I neither ride to cafes, nor, at my age, enjoy riding with clip-ons.

I ultimately want my bike not to be a show-room bike, but one that is in very nice condition, runs reliably, and looks (and is) used regularly.

I was looking for side covers, but I would ride without them. Fortunately, I found them. It wasn't going to be a deal breaker.

In keeping reasonably stock, the value will actually remain with it. The cafe racer, while pleasant to view, is often so modified, both chassis and electrical, that 10 years form now, it will be un-repairable because no one understood the simplified wiring. The chassis mods may or may not hold up. But a reasonably clean stock bike, with all the tabs intact, will still have value, even if only to a new cafe-racer creator.

I don't intend to sell the bike for a long time, but I like the idea that is will have intrinsic value as an example of the bikes made in 1976, rather than lose value over time as the mods become a liability over time.

I don't hate Cafe Racers, I actually understand their appeal, but ultimately, a stock bike is even more interesting as the years go by.

How many people admire Choppers from, say the late 40's as much as they would admire a pristine example of a 1948 Harley? See what I mean?

The amount of work to return to stock is no harder or more expensive then the work and effort in making a cafe bike. So close to stock for me..

But I'll still talk to you and admire the handiwork of a well done cafe. Poorly done Cafe's, well, that's a different story.

Well said! Better to build a bike for yourself than to try to build it to someone else's idea of what it should be!

While true (and a good signature quote to boot), many are building Cafe Racers to a look, rather then a purpose. To me, a true cafe racer is a bike stripped of un-necessary parts, and modified to be faster and better handling. That is what cafe racers did, race from Cafe to Cafe.

Many of the builds seem to be more of the look, and make modifications that lower handling and performance. I cringe at them. No fork brace, wide tires on too narrow rims. Pods that are more restrictive than the stock air filter, lowered forks with limited suspension travel (or none-seen that). It's amazing.

I am truly a function over form type person, and if it's a look you want, go for it. It pains me somewhere, when I see a poor running, poor handling bike that obviously someone was attempting to make something out of, but only ended up a snapshot of a bike they really wanted.

It in a way, reminds me of a movie set, like for the old westerns. The front of the building looks authentic, but when you go inside, it is a false front, a facade, not really a building at all.

Like all art, there are some who like it, some who don't, but my bike is going to be a motorcycle first, and an art work only as an aside.

(I surreptitiously return the soapbox to it's previous owner)...

Yup, I can certainly understand bolting up GSXR forks and brakes to an old scoot, because that gives a performance and safety improvement. On the CBR I'm building, I had to replace the front forks, because the accident it was in before I got it trashed them. I went with '95 forks instead of '93s because the '95s had better valving and less chance of killing the rider ;D The CB650 I built has an upgraded charging system and a new, better brake master cylinder.

However, the CB650 still has the stock air box, down to a NOS filter and airbox cover, because that's the best and most reliable way to make power out of the stock carbs. The 650s are as bad or worse than the 360s as far as pods go, but I still see people bolting pods onto them. Why do people want to go slower!?!?!?!

Who do I hand the soapbox to now? ;)

Wow, another signature quote....

I'd leave it unoccupied for now, I am sure there are many people lined up anyway... 8)
