1976 CB360t Slightly modded, restored to roadworthiness - Workin' on Beauty

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

we need a candy sapphire blue owners thread so we can all soapbox and bitch ourselves happy! LOL

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

I have been traveling for work and busy with a bunch of personal items. But I managed to get a pic of the barn find motor. I have taken a look at the cam box. Journals are nice, everything looks good on the top end. It will need a valve job on the head, only because I want to swap this head to my original engine. Having 2 engines means I can leisurely restore the second head, do the job right, and when done, just swap the heads.

There is something reassuring about having a second engine full of spares.

Still waiting for the non-precipitation, a little bit war m day for Sophie to get outside and play.

This engine was included with a slew of other parts and tanks...

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

nice,be sure to pull the tensioners and use the good ones.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Already checked, the tensioner is good. !

I am going to rebuild this engine too. It is in decent enough shape.

Maybe one day I'll find a cheap titled bike with a mess of an engine, and then I'll put this in it.

But even if not, I like having the complete spares package, so to speak.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Probably time to look for a titled frame and build everything around it ;)

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Disappointment today, but has promise...Gee, it's 50 Degrees out, time to roll out Sophie and check it out.

Tried to start, nogo....Pulled plugs, they were fouled from the previous work, a little oil on them. Put in the new NGK Iridiums. Boom, up and running. A little off as everything cleared, then finally warm settled into a nice idle, and responsive to the throttle...Great.

O.K. I turn her off, do a pre-ride check..Check tire pressures, oil, etc...Everything looks good.

O.K., find my helmet and gloves (Hey, my hands freeze at 50 Deg. out.).

Start her up...oops, what's wrong, baby, you don't want to go....

Checking fuel, seems o.k. Try to start...no go...Runs on one cylinder for a few seconds and quits.

Time to recheck points, plugs, timing and carb sync...but NO TIME right now...So I'll check later.

I did take some sunny day pics...

The Tank is part of the Barn Sale I bought, as well as the side covers.

So a little tuning work (Need that electronic ignition ASAP) and recheck the carbs, and I shall be taking Sopihie out for a stroll..

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Man, so close! I'm sure you'll figure it out quickly when you have some time to sit down with it.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

pull those plugs...probably fouled em w the choke. put in a new pair of plugs get her started. Let her idle til shes good and warm with no choke, fully opened. tweak in your air/ fuel screws and idle adj til shes running right. 1200 rpm.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

the plugs are new...No choke...she starts without it.... I'll clean them, but they are $8 each and brandy new. They have less then 5 minutes of run time on them...

Part of the problem was the battery being low....On the charger now....

It might be the new cheapo regulator not working too....

I'll work it out...She was running before I changed the lower case, she'll run again.

I did have the carbs off when I did the case, so they probably lost their sync....

If the carbs were synced before and you didnt separate them or purposely mess w the sync adjustment they should still be good. Also, pick up a 10 pack of the cheapest NGK B8ES plugs you can find. Atleast until you get it tuned and running good full time. If you ran it only 5 minutes...chances are the new $8 plugs are now black and maybe carbon fouled. clean em up, dry em out and try them again. While you wait for battery.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Running on one could easily be low battery and/or carb
with plugs fouling I would connect voltmeter and check bat voltage

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Yup, that is my plan....

Just had other jobs today..Had to change the tranny fluid in my son's car, some details around the house...etc...

Supposed to be some more warm days....

I need to double check the new regulator/rectifier too...not sure if it was working....

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

No pics, but SUCCESS!!! I actually put 10 miles on her today. After a little work documented below.

A fully charged battery does help, but there was more.

I started Sophie up cold, and she ran fine. Warmed it up a little...still good. Though "Fine" does mean some burples and coughs.. I take her for a short ride, up a short hill and down (don't want to push her back, so start uphill first...LOL)

She seems fine, but on the way back starts misbehaving, so I pull her in the driveway where she quits running.. UGH.

O.K. the battery is low again????? Don't think so, but I get my booster battery (one of those external yellow plastic container ones) and try to restart. Bingo, restarts...must be a low battery. Get the voltmeter to check the new regulator.... 14.4 volts max, battery is 12.7 resting, gee, the battery isn't bad.

Think I have it fixed, maybe, and try to ride again...She stops. Won't restart.

O.K., maybe plugs, pull the plugs (New NGK Iridiums) and they are a little sooted up, but not fouled. Back in.
O.K., not battery, not Plugs, maybe Carbs? Maybe Timing? Maybe the points cover is shorting. I take off the cover, and there is no change. The cover wasn't shorting, and the right points look too tight.

I had timed the bike VERY well the last time, so I did not expect timing to be out.

I get my meter, my Alternator cover with a hole in it, and a strobe. Whoa, timing is way out....???
I can't get a handle on the timing issue. The left points are firing on the F mark, and the right are firing on the T mark...Check for shorts, cross connections...Finally disconnect point wiring from the harness..Seems all backwards.
I check the advancer for correct placement, but she ran fine, then quit...I decide just to start from scratch. The right points don't look like they are opening much at all, so a complete re-timing is in order.

I gap the left points, and set the timing to the "LF" mark after the intake valve closes. Perfect. Check the right, and the timing is a little advances, and the points are too shut. Adjust the right to the right timing, and the gap is about 0.014", perfect.

Now time for the Strobe. The timing is a little off. As I loosen the backing plate to zero in the left, the timing changes a LOT!!
Takes a lot of fiddling, but finally get the timing on the spot for left and right.

A few more checks, and I try a restart. Starts, but doesn't like idle. But is running on both cylinders and sounds better too. Idle is a little erratic, but throttle on and above idle, perfect....

Button her up, try for a restart....she starts.
O.K. Helmet, gloves and Jacket on, lets test ride.
Up the hill again, good. Back and forth, she is running nicely, except for the erratic idle. Pulls well.
My riding ventures further and further, finally was going back and forth a mile. My face is hurting from the smile...!!

Put 10 miles on her today. Except for the idle being a little erratic, she is running nice.

So,

1. PAMCO Pete, I need the pointless ignition .....
2. I need to work over the carbs again. I think the sync is off again, and I think the idle circuit is still a little flaky. I am going to clean them again, and re-sync. That should help with the idle.
3. I may need the throttle shaft seal repaired. I think the idle issue is a vacuum leak. The boots seem good (I may replace anyway), but the seals have never really been checked, and being felt, they are probably stiff and victims of age.
4. I need to clean my new rear rim, as the chain threw oil all over it!! Happy Problem.

5. Further Plans. A nice guy from Do The Ton, sent me a couple of tabs he cut off his bike. I need to replace a broken tab for the air cleaner mount. Once that is done, I am going to re-install the factory air box and filters. I am going to replace the paper element with Foam, but I think the factory box will help with the idle too, as the UNI pods may be causing some of the idle issues.

So,
I need to do a few more runs, before I trust her...Then I will start using her for local trips to the store and alike. Trust takes time to build.

Hopefully, the next run I'll have my son video some drive by's and you will be able to see and hear her rolling....

!!!!!!

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

awesome!
have you adjusted the cam chain tensioners. if they arent right that can cause weird timing issues. I would reset timing and it would be fine. however if I hit 8000+ rpm timing would be off. reset. if I didnt go over 8000 all would be good. Finally I reset the tensioners it fixed that issue.

did you get the air/fuel adjusters set to highest rpms? they will mess w idle. then adjust idle back down to 1200?
a handheld analog tach on the rotor works best. much quicker and more sensitive than the gauge. I know most guys dont have one, but if you do. try it. its hard to see and hear a 50 rpm difference.

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Yes, the Cam Chain tensioner is adjusted well...I Think that changed the timing on me in the first place.

She really ran well except for the idle. Had her up to 65 MPH and she got there quickly. She pulls hard, better than I remember. Also vibrates hard, LOL, so much more than my 750...

Sophie is not so refined. She vibrates, is loud, the controls are stiff, but I love her anyway...LOL.

The MAC muffler is just too load..Sounds great for about a minute, then is just too load. I had packed it with fiberglass in the past, I am going to try that again.

I continue my quest for a stock like exhaust. The MAC system has a 2 into 2 offering, but I would really like to know if it is loud or not. I'd really like a more subtle noise level.

I had the carbs spot on, but I am sure the handling of them when I replaced the lower crankcase upset them....

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

I put the 35W/35W bulb in my 53/4 headlight and mounted it to the bike. Not much, but I need better weather for some of the work, and need a warm day to ride. Right now it is snowing, so riding is out....

It is not as much fun having a lot of work done and being able to ride, but the weather is not conducive to riding...

Oh well...soon..!!!

Re: 1976 CB360t Slightly modified restore to roadworthiness - Beauty later project

Sophie has been sitting for 2 weeks weeks without any attention. I had some sork to do today (Install a radio and antenna in my son's car) and was worried about wasting a warm day. The radio install went well, so Sophie was rolled out. She hadn't been run in 2 weeks, so I was concerned if she was going to be a little annoyed at me.

Fuel on, Choke halfway, kill switch off. 3 kicks (hate running down the battery) and then kill switch on. 4th kick...nothing, 5 the kick, she woke up and idled nicely. Gave her 2 minutes of quiet idle time and shut her down.

Then got my Jacket, helmet and gloves and Sophie and I wnet for a spin.

I put 15 miles on, around town, joy riding. My cheeks are still hurting from the smile.

She ran nearly perfectly and I am trusting her more.

After I get another 30 or 40 miles under her belt, I am going to try a real destination, something down hill even (I try to stay uphill from home, so it would be easier to push her home).

When my son is home and I am riding, I need to get a video, do a couple of fly by's in.

She sounds great at this point. The carbs, thanks to sea foam, seem to be getting smoother with every run.

Need to polish her up and get some beauty shots too.

you dont need to go to the trouble of polish, but I am ready for some beauty shots. Wango just bolted up the mac 2x2 exhaust & just got her running. might ask him about it.

I have been looking at the Mac 2into2 system. I may indulge Sophie in that one. My old Mac 2 into 1 is little worse for wear.
