Been Around the Block
Hello everyone,
My bike seems to have a charging issue at low idle. Here are my voltage numbers:
-Bike off, battery connected to bike - 12.4V (which I believe is normal) Although there does seem to be a bit of parasitic draw that I have to figure out
-Bike running at idle, around 1,100 RPM - Low voltage (I believe low 11's)
-Bike running at 2,000 RPM - Just starting to reach 12V
I can run the bike for quite a while staying at high speeds without any issues, but I have had problems when I let myself go too slow around town for too long.
I know when running, there should normally be around 13V, and shouldn't be below the 12V mark, but it takes me all the way up to 2K RPM to reach 12V.
I have replaced the stock regulator and rectifier with a 2-in-1 unit from Rick's. I seem to have the same results as I did on the stock pieces.
Also, I know the regulator is suppose to regulate the voltage while the RPMs move up and down, but one thing I have noticed is that when I rev it, the headlight will get brighter, then dim again. It doesn't get extremely brighter to the point where I worry about blowing the bulb, but is some fluctuation with the headlight normal?
I've heard with these older bikes, they don't like to charge at idle, but should it be THAT low at 1,100 RPM?
I'm not entirely familiar with the charging system on these bikes. I just want to make sure I'm not chasing a problem that doesn't actually exist and is just normal behavior for these bikes.
Thank you very much. Please save me from this headache and worry this issue gives me.
Take care everyone.
