Progress report!
This weekend was super nice, so I spent a lot of it working on the bike (but not as much time as I spent riding)
My patience got the best of me and I threw in the towel for this round of tank mods. After 3 more layers of bondo and sanding (for a total of 8-9), I just went straight to rattle can primer and paint. 3 coats of primer. 3 coats of the quintessential flat-black. Doing this brought out all the imperfections, so when I revisit the tank in a month or so, I'll know where all the high/low spots are. It's not pretty or perfect, but it's enough for now
I also moved on to a much needed oil change. It’s been about 400-500 since the last time I did this, but It was way overdue. The oil was super black and thick, which was good because it was a sign that there were a bunch of engine contaminants being suspended in the oil. After draining the oil from the drain plug and reservoir, it was on to removing the oil filter cover.
When I changed the oil a couple months ago, I had to remove the ‘oil filter base’ due to an aftermaket oil filter bolt that was the wrong length for my year. This time around, after picking up oil and a filter, I also found a stock oil filter bolt for my particular year/make/model. It was tricky navigating around the new pipe, but I managed to get the oil filter base back on, along with some fresh lube for the engine.
Super cool, finned 'oil filter base'. This was apprently a 1-off, stock part for the 77-78 F-models (i think) that provided extra flow for the oil, which provided better cooling.
