1978 CB750 Cafe build second attempt

Well it is time to work on this bike as the frame for the cb550 is locked up getting powder coated for the long weekend. The spoke to comstars conversion is progressing with the rear done after I bought a cb750automatic specific rear brake assembly. The front is still a work in progress as the spedo drive needs to switch sides, yes more ebay purchases.

It helps to have the correct parts. The speedometer drive and spacer off the Hondamatic did the trick. I will have to mount the dual discs up to see if they both will fit but that is for another day.

I am bagging the idea of dual discs on this, partly due to the added weight and the wow cost of the Hondamatic specific 5 bolt pattern.

I put the new shocks on only to find out that the sweet hoop has got to be replaced with an up sweep as the tire runs into this one before the shocks bottom out, hoop for sale..

Well isn't this special.. I have torn down more engines than I can count and I have NEVER seen this before. What to do?

Stick it back in? :)

No idea. Without drilling it and using an extractor, I'm not sure what to do here. Drilling it is going to put material into your cylinder. I'm assuming you're not pulling the engine anytime soon?

Have you had this plug out before? Sticking it back in with some epoxy to glue it back together might get the rest of the plug back out, but it's doubtful. Pulling the engine and taking the head off might end up being the only solution.

That's what she said..
It was my plan to get this running before the tear down but I am with you, if it twisted off there is no way an easy out will extract it.
Might just shop for another engine at this point. If the spark plugs are rusted in this bad what else is rusted together..

Thanks for being patient with this one. I can only have one non roller at a time and with the cb550 engine being torn down waiting for the exhaust guides to be installed I am stuck on this one. It is next up in the queue though so stay tuned. I got superbike bars for this one to see what difference this has on my carpel tunnel.

While I was at recycled cycles I made them bring every fuel tank out before I would make a decision and low and behold I found one without badge tabs and one very minor ding. I will get it cleaned up, sanded down to metal and mounted before I make a decision on color or nickel plated like the other builds.

What I thought was a badge delete tank was body shop special so I am thinking it will be painted. I am going with a two up seat on this in black leather. I like the color I had the 550 painted and am thinking of using it again, thoughts?

Well I got NEW side covers and the actually fit, yes I had my doubts. I also got a 20 degree up sweep rear hoop, how big does the seat need to be? I am planing 2 up but this looks excessive as the wife only weighs a buck twenty.

I dropped the side covers and the tank off to get painted as he takes a bit of time. The color will be Range Rover red.

Thanks brownie. Had to stop by the painters with the thought that if he hadn't started I was going elsewhere with my projects but he surprised me and had the color on, no clear yet.
