Re: 1978 GS550 cafe - fuckin mirrors and seat upholstry...
ive been going at the nut with a wrench hard. ill take a better look tomorrow in light. but its still gonna be a week or two till ill have my bar ends. gah. hopefully i can get my seat piece made tomorrow too. sucks cause i remember that little piece being a pain to make, and it just flew away and i gotta redo it.
its like some higher power is like "fuck you mike, fuck you and your cafe bike"
SOOO the mirrors were rusted in there. it wasnt the nut, it was the thread. so i just put a piece of metal protecting my master cylinder and hacksawed it off and filed it smooth. also made the new rear upholstry piece. glad i did cause i like the new one i did better than the first. got some shots as the sun was going down. im waiting on my mirrors and doing some minor cleaning until they get here.
i cant wait to get some actual high quality shots of it. and i cant wait to take it for cruises. look where i moved to, and see the coast i get to take my bike along everyday to the tattoo shop. im pumped.
Nice work Mike, You inspired me to take my GS for a squirt..... If I have any advice for you it would be keep the air box carby set up stock (looks you have anyway) I'm having a nightmare tuning due to pods and re-jetting (or PO's lack of). But when they're running right they sure are fun bikes. It seems the hardest thing for you this summer will be choosing which ride to take, Lucky you. That's a long beach! remember to keep your eye's on the road.
I REALLY like what you did with the shortened seat. It looks right. It's also nice to see one of the more recent in-line 4s like this. I remember when those were cafe'd back then. Not everything had that clubman look, most were a lot like yours. Lots of RDs, GSs, KZs, CBs, XSs, and of course the European ones that weren't already that style. I had a MotoGuzzi 850-T Interceptor that I badly wanted to have like a LeMans.
I gotta tell you there is a wicked possible trick you could do with tail/brake lights since your frame tube ends are visible in the back. There are some LED brake/tail lights on ebay that are actually smaller than a dime! They could be fitted in or on the end of a frame tube.
I bought a set for my street/tracker, but am mounting them in a different way because both my frame had square box ends and my fender mount precluded this from my options. If I did a cafe job I would put them in the end of the frame tubes.
Check them out if interested. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/LED-Motorcycle-License-Plate-TAIL-BRAKE-TURN-Lights-AMB_W0QQitemZ170449072939QQihZ007QQcategoryZ33713QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m444QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DCRX%26its%3DC%252BS%26itu%3DSI%252BUA%252BLM%252BLA%26otn%3D5%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D8005963214106012249
I haven't gotten to test them, but they should do the trick. I'd like to make them my turnsignals too.
oh wow those are some small lights! my tail light right now is in that led strip below my license plate, but more lights couldnt hurt. i was just gonna plug up the ends of the frame with something anyway.
