1979 BMW R100RS complete redo: "Shiny Crumpet"

Loving this build, great job! So youre going with a factory style tank in lieu of that beautiful Terry Baker piece? Is that just because of the sketchy mounting situation? And finally, what are your plans for the Baker tank?
Keep up the good work!

Photoshop Request

Davis: Definitely going with a stock BMW tank to replace the Terry Baker. The TB would require a bunch of work to make it fit like I would want it to, so it will be sold when all is done.

Soo, with the bike, I have been bad about posting updates, and much as progressed. It is not finished, as the tank, cowl, and fenders still need paint, and I need to make a new seat, but it is driveable. I have ridden it the last two nights, and gotten about 10 miles in so far.

So first a PHOTOSHOP request: Can someone make the cowl and the fender black, and extend the seat to the tank? I just need an idea, but my skills are very limited. I am also open to color suggestions.

I got everything together last sunday, filled it all with fluids, then monday night started it up. I took a video of the first startup, but don't have it to post. Honestly, the video is embarrassing. It started fine, and ran okay, but it took me 20 seconds to realize that the left cylinder was smoking BADLY and filling the whole garage with smoke. :'( I was sitting on the bike dumb and happy, then looked behind me to see a white garage. I turned it off, and the next afternoon removed the cylinder. I found 2 of the 3 rings upside down, including the oil rings. I flipped them and reinstalled, then pulled the other cylinder to check the rings, and found the oil ring upside down also. With all rings in the correct orientation, I put it all back together. The new neutral switch was also leaking badly on the tranny, so I reinstalled the old one. Neither one works, but at least the old one doesn't leak.

Getting the pistons back in:

I had the engine guy install the rings and the pistons in to the cylinders, but I definitely learned two things: Check everything yourself, and installing piston rings is not that hard.

With everything back together, I started it up again Tuesday night. Smoke gone, tranny leak fixed.

Notice above that I pointed the bike exhaust OUT of the garage this time. The night before I pointed it INTO the garage. I am dumb.

Wednesday and Thursday night, I have been riding it and breaking in the new rings. Stay below 4.5k, snap shut throttle, no full throttle, etc. She is SOO much more solid then before, especially with a solidly mounted fuel tank. I am going to have to deal with one leaky valve cover, but considering I changed every seal in every drivetrain part, I have been happy with the lack of leaks from everything else.

Hi Xavier.
Really good job!!!
Cowls, fender and headlight in black, and seat extended to the tank.
I hope it is what you wanted...
If you need something more...

My vote would be to shorten the subframe hoop and move the cowl and seat (as is) forward for a more stocky look. Just a thought. I minimized the subframe and went with a small aluminum custom tail piece on my bike. See pic here > GoodSparkGarage BMW R75/6

Yer build is looking great!

some quick photochops

I'm redoing a BMW/6 subframe for a friend right now. We're going with a shorter rear hoop 23.5" but on the longer wheelbase bike. I will however place the rear shocks at the same angle as the short wheelbase. This rear subframe will be scratch built and welded on not the BMW bolt on. We also made 3/4" dia. tube rearset mount instead of the BMW sheet metal. It depends on how tall a person is where you put the bum stop? Too far forward and you will be cramped? BTW the mono-shock bike look great. Good to see the BMW's popping up.
Cheers, 50gary

Mano and Sparky, thank you for the photochops!!

I am passed the point of modding the rear subframe. Everything is powdercoated. I have been tossing around the idea of buying another subframe and modding it. That is one of the benefits of the BMW bolted on subframe.

I have been getting some miles in on this bike, and don't think I would want the back of the seat to be any farther forward. I am 6 ft, and with the stock peg location, my butt sits far back already. I like the thought of the same size seat and a smaller cowl in the back.

I am surprised, but I like the white tank and cowl. My current paint plans are silver sides(similiar to current, just add silver in to the knee cutouts), red pinstripe between the black and silver, and a single silver center stripe though the gas filler and cowl. Ofcourse I would put the same design theme on the cowl too. Sparky, can you take the first chop you made, fill in the knee cutouts with silver(inside the current gold pinstripe), and add a red line to frame the silver?

Here ya go. However, I'm digging the blue pinstripe :) Adding another color seems a little disconnected. Also, I think with this scheme you wouldn't need additional stripes on the top. The negative black space created from the side 'panels' will already give it that feel of a backbone stripe. Either way, hope this helps. Glad to hear you're already racking up the miles on it!

Sparky, you are on amazing photoshopper!!! Both of those look awesome. I like both the red and blue pinstripe. It will be a hard decision.

You are gifted with a designer's eye for sure. So, on the same theme, would the idea be a silver stripe surrounded by black on the front fender, with a pinstripe in between??

I dropped off the front engine cover at the powdercoater, they are making it blue also. None of the pictures I have posted have the front cover on, but it just didn't look right as natural aluminum. I was also worried about it being uncoated, as it seemed to pick up dirt and oil that was not coming off.

I like the black and silver combo with the blue pin-striping, but I would like to see the primary color (silver) in white as well.

I have been very SLOW about getting work done. I drove the bike 30 miles up to my buddies place and left it there, so things are starting to get accomplished. I followed him around on monday afternoon to two upholstry places. The first was closed (despite calling right before we left), but the second was ready and willing. They made the seat out of foam while I stood there to ensure I like the design. We added a little bump in the front and talked about single/double stiching and white piping. It took them a couple days to cover it, then my friend brought it over so I could check it out. I haven't seen it on the bike yet, but it came out beautiful. I will let the pics do the talking. Paint is next, and getting a new front fender made. The seat cost 50 euros to have made + a new fiberglass seatpan from caferace.com.

All parts are in my possession now. Just have to get her home and install the new seat for the bike to be finished. I started her up at my friend's place with the intention of driving it home, but decided another maiden 30 mile voyage at 9 pm wasn't a good idea.

That is just pure, leagues above the ebay auction, dig the color combo. Nice work!

How the fuck..Your exhaust! My god you did an amazing job on that..

The bike looks like one big BMW emblem..Sweet as

I wish I had the budget for a bmw build! Good work

Thank you for all the compliments!

It was never my intention to use all of the colors from the BMW badge, but it certainly looks like it. Adding the badges really finished off the bike though!

I did a 60 mile day on Tuesday with it, with no problems except running out of gas on main. It has been a while since I drove a bike with stop cocks and no fuel guage! Thank goodness for reserve!
