1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber---Welded Seat tubes

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

your inspiration bike is a accident waiting to happen, the shock angle is way to steep and with a bump will cause that dreaded death whoble. jsut be sure you bear that in mind while your building

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

What are you doing with the tank that was on there? Wanna sell it? Wink wink nudge.

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Joe,
Yeah, that's what I thought. I will definitely be going more vertical with the shocks (pics to follow soon).
troybilt suggested no spring seat and that's the way I'm headed.

Ethanol, Keepin' the tank, sorry!

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Don't blame you that tank is nice as hell. Love the shape and color.

Hey All,

Not much progress, but I did get some steel tubing to finish the seat rails.

Also, I have a friend that has a waterjet machine, and I designed and him cut out a license plate bracket for me out 1/8" stainless steel.
It looks AWESOME! It's obviously not bent yet.

And my new Lowbrow Customs tail light fits very well (which means I can measure accurately).

I.m really looking forward to posting more as things move along, but I work for myself and I've been very busy of late so that's a good thing!

Nice to have a friend with a waterjet!

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Well, I'm back from the dead!
I had to take a short hiatus; I got really busy with work (I work for myself) and the scooter took a back seat.

Anyway, progress with PICTURES! ;D

The PO lived at the shore, so lots of saltwater corrosion.

I was looking at an XS650 to buy..are they pretty easy to find parts for?

Yup. Now finding an XS in decent shape that someone isnt asking an insanely high price for is another matter...

Look at mikesxs.com

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Hey VonYinzer, I'm in Southampton (Northeast of Philly).

Cool Muggs... Im in the much superior Pittsburgh region (Beaver PA). ;)

Some good guys out your way (Bobdot namely).

All of the PA members have been talking for years about a mid state meetup/campout/ride someday. Of we can organize you you should swing by!

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

My son is out there this summer on an internship with PNC bank.

I'll need to get in touch with some of the DTTers out my way and see if anyone wants to come drink my beer and give me some tips.

If you guys get something together and I have a running bike, I'm there!

Re: 1979 Yamaha XS650 Bobber

Hey All,

Well I've actually done a fair amount of work on the scooter lately, although you would never know it by my participation here (Sorry :-[ ).
Anyway, I promise more pics over the weekend. I did however score this jewel on eBay.

Anyone know of a nice 2 3/8" diameter speedo that will go in here? I ain't builden no speed demon, but I will probably top out at over 40 MPH. Haha!
