1981 Yamaha XS 650 Special

Thanks Maritime Bike for the suggestion, I will clean and check connections with a test light and procced from there. Hopefully I don't have to spend lots of time to get the lights going.

If you haven't already, you might want to change the blinker relay. You can get one off the rack at any auto parts store and are super cheap.

Check out this XS Cafe.

I'm a sucker for black wheels.

One thing I noticed about the relay is you need a fresh battery, Mine stopped blinking half way through the light repair process and I thought sh!t it tanked, but I put the tender on and 2 hours later it started blinking again. had to have enough juice to kick in into action. After that I just left the battery hooked to the tender/charger so I didn't have the voltage drop to much playing with the lights.

Cheers

Been to Florida for the last two weeks with the wife at our home in Sarasota riding our primary bikes. Got a chance to go to Daytona for Bike Week. Got to test drive several manaufacturers motorcycles and fell in love with the Triumph Thuxton. Wow what a sweet cafe style factory bike. I'm a fan of "ole" school looking bikes and also saw the new Indian brand. Very nice, looks like the original bikes but the prices are out of this world, starts at over 25K. Will be getting back to the build on Monday, got a few parts that I needed at a dealer in Florida. Now that I got a taste on being back in the saddle, I am hoping for warmer weather going forward in the Northeast. Will post pics of some of the great rides I saw....

I got a chance to work on the build today. I have an issue with the turn signals and headlamp not working, so I thought. I was adviced by a tech to get it started first then work on the headlamp and turn signal issue. He stated that the some of the electric works when the motorcycle is operating. So I installed the fuel tank and hooked up the fuel lines, filled it up with fuel. I checked for spark which I had then attempted to fire her up. And after several minutes and fouling a plug, IT STARTED!!! The headlamp came on, the gauges all work with lights and the indicator lights also work. Man, after eight years on not be run this baby sounds great. The Vance & Hines exhaust are awesome. I took it out in the parking lot for a ride but ran out of fuel. I only put a small quantity of fuel in in case I needed to remove the tank. Of course the turn signals don't work and I have a fuel leak at one of the fuel lines. But all in all I am happy with how it operates. I might not have the turn signals hooked up properly so I just printed out a wiring diagram in color so I can match the correct wires with the connectors. I still have to decide on a seat. May want to put a brat style on for now under I decide how to mount the cafe style seat that I purchased a few months ago.
On another note, here is a pic of my other ride along with my wife's while we were in Florida for a few weeks. I can't wait till the weather breaks in the Northeast so I can get in the saddle. Also, enjoy the pics of a few bikes from Daytona and from the Geggenhiem Museum traveling motorcycle art show that was in Orlando a few years ago.

Got the bike on the road, runs great but still having issue with the turn signals. So I took the turn signals off and I will ride without them at this time. I put the stock seat on to ride it until I get more time to work on the tail section. With only 11,000 miles and stored for 8 years it needs to run. I would like to thanks all those who have given me ideas and support. And a special thanks to JRK for his inspiration on his build. I love my harley but am liking the cafe thing. Looking forward to doing another build and will continue to support this great site. Ride safe and see you at the next turn....

AWESOME MAN!!! dont do like some of the others and vanish after you finish your build man! stick aroudn an help out others! how about some pics/video's of you roaring on that thing! Wait till you see how much your riding that scoot over your HD! show it off man! AWESOME WORK on your build man, just awesome! keep them coming!

Nice build cretin. I love your paint on that tank. have ya been riding it? Mine is a slow build but I hope to be riding it next year (i wanted this year but as it plays out it is more and more unrealistic).

Been riding regularly, even take it to the HD dealer where I work. Turning a few heads, LOL. The paint is rattle can, then clear coated. Still working on the seat, I cut the pan and now shaping the foam. I have a tailsection but not ready to cut the frame at this time. Bike is running great and love the looks I get, this is one fun ride.

I was taking pics of my wife's VTX and found my bike in the background. Here is a not so good pic of what the bike looks like. I will take better pics when I recover the seat. Enjoy...

Finally took some pics of my XS650 that I have been enjoying since the spring. My build cost me under $1100.00 and I am thinking of doing the brat style thing this fall. The clubman bars just are not comfortable for my riding style. Enjoy...

Looks good, man! I'm dying to find an XS650. I love the engine/exhaust. Reminds me of the old Triumphs. Would love to Frisco or Brat one of 'em.. Someday! Working on completing my 400A and Kawai 440 in the meantime. Keep up the great work.

Looks like a hell of a start, I can't wait to see a more cohesive seat design on it!
A little cut and grind here and there ....you'll be dialed!

I am making some changes to my build, I chopped the rear fender and painted the rr tail lamp black, I found an old aermachii head lamp that takes a speedo and will be installed that with new headlamp ears, I purchased a set of dunstall style mufflers , and will wrap the front headers. I found a set of 10" progressive rr shocks to drop the bike and installed higher handlebars to do more of a brat style bike. But may put the clubman back on. I will drop a few pics in a few days as I make the mods.
