1982 Virago 920 engine up build

Then last weekend, i decided to go ahead and finish the exhaust. I can do all the routing now that i know where everything will be. you may also notice that the pegs have been textured and the shift linkage is done.

got the 2-1 transition and bend done

and then this was my plan for routing the tip

however after playing with the clearance for the retention springs (they keep hitting the lower rearset mounting point) i tried an underneath routing... and kind of like it but want your opinion on it. both from an aesthetic perspective as well as a "wont the wheel will hit it?" (it wont btw) practical/mechanical perspective.

honestly the underside/left side mounting would be easier from a fabrication perspective. so that is something i have been thinking about too.

any input would be helpful. i ran out of argon, so i cant really finish it up till i get more, which gives you guys time to give me some input.
thanks
~Chris

Either way works, obviously, but I think the visual balance was better with the pipe completely on the right.
Thanks for the update, we were jonesing for a fix here!

I like the under to the left........its like the exhaust is snaking its way around the whole bike.
Dude, those rearsets are damn nice!

I like the uniqueness of the routing to the left side, but as was said before, the visual balance is better with it on the right. Thanks for the update. I continue to be amazed by this build!

Right side for me. Looks a little awkward coming out the left.

Thanks for the update Chris. Super nice work!

I like the left side exit because... well its a big pipe and visually wont overpower the rest of the bike. Plus its unique, and that is always a good thing in my book.

Hey guys!
Sorry for the long delay in updates. I have some good news and some bad news

I sold the ducati, so i am running bike-less. However, the main reason for selling the ducati was to get us in good position to buy a house, so we are debt free! no car payments no credit card bills (for now)

the good news is, i have about $1000 to put into the bike build. so i got all the parts i need to finish the virago.
Here's what i got so far:
Wiring harness connectors
Battery wiring and connectors
Spark plug wires
Ballistic 12 cell Lithium battery
Headlight from Delkevic
Piston rings ($75 a piston... ouch)
Right control (run/kill switch)
Billet mirrors
Starter solenoid
LED turn signals (Rizoma knock offs)
Master cylinder reseviors
K&N Air filter
Seat foam
Braided brake lines
Paint (got everything i need to spray the whole bike)
Hydraulic brake switch

i also have a full tank of argon now and should finish up the exhaust tomorrow. Then i will run my wiring, finish modifying the tank plug then i will finish all the molds, and make the body work. Then i will fix my starter, and try and get the motor running to make sure everything works before tearing everything down, rebuilding the engine, and painting everything.

the only big thing i still have to purchase is a set of custom spokes from Buchanan's but i am going to get those ordered during tear-down and paint.

pictures soon. i will have to make the final decision on the exhaust routing tomorrow. I like the clean unique look of the left side exhaust, but i also like the balance of the right side as there isnt much going on on that side of the bike.

more soon!
thanks
~Chris

Good to hear you are still around
just get us some more pics and updates!

So I just stumbled into this build, and I LOVE IT!

I have gone through a lot of the same crap as you with composites, molds, and part reproduction so I felt all of your pains.

This build is Bad Ass. Love the craftsmanship. Gives me lots of inspiration for my 920R build. Plan on building my own frame as well. Great looking welds! Where in Va are you?

I would LOVE to get my hands on an R! honestly the shaft drive has been the bane of this whole build. I am in Tidewater VA Newport News specifically. where are you?

Sorry for the delay in updates, have been working steadily, but i have been technologically challenged. A snapping turtle ruined my phone while i was fishing and i lost all my pictures, so i have been on my wife's old phone trying to get the pictures back.. but lost some of the "progress" pictures. my phone is out for a new screen, and i think the photo's can be restored, but who knows.

anyway.. here's what i got.

first off, i had a pile of new parts and paint, but this is all that remains as i have put everything else on the bike:

I welded up the exhaust, but lost those pictures.. i will get some up here soon. i went with the left side exit, and it looks pretty sick.

Then the next big hurdle was to do the wiring. Here is the stock wiring diagram, so you can see what i am working with:

There was just too much stuff i wasnt going to use to cut out what i didnt want, so i am using this diagram as a reference (yes, it is XV920 spesific)

clip clip!

started laying the wires out...

then rather than trying to do everything at once, i decided to do the ignition/charging/starter system first and put in the lights and indicators after that was all figured out.

mounted my TCI box..

and got all the wires run:

this is an extra picture of the same thing, but shows the headlight/mounts in a terrible quality picture:

the last real question i have is this: I have the left control of an early CBR600RR and these are the output wires. the horn and headlight i know, and i have removed the clutch switch wires, the orange and blue are the turn signal wires, but why are there two of each? how do i wire this up?

then, i marked my tank plug to fit all of the wiring and TCI box. i marked it first, but dont have a picture of it finished yet.

Then, my brother's SV650s Power Commander needed to be re-programmed so i saved him the $300 the shop quoted him.

So thats where i am. i have to run a few wires still, but i am pretty close to being done with the wiring. now it's body-work/carbonfiber/kevlar time!!! i'll get better pictures of the whole bike, the exhaust and the other goodies as soon as i can.
thanks!

Looking at diagrams for the CBR600RR, it looks like there is also a hazard switch on the LH control that uses an orange and a light blue wire - maybe that's what you've got.

which diagrams were you looking at? i am having trouble finding a good one to see how they use and route the wires.

I found a number of them with a google image search. Is there a hazard button on that control? If not, I was wrong. :)
