my dad works for the county and he is good friends with the guy who prints out the vynils for the street signs, so he got me a bunch of scrap aluminum, I cut it and bent it to fit.. then i emailed him the picture that i wanted on there and sent the covers to work with my dad. he blew them up to size brought them home and i placed them on there how i wanted em just like i did the gas tank except without paint or peeling them off ya know, so its basically a road sign with the picture i wanted instead of red S T O P get it? its nice cus aluminum doesnt rust! my dad is also in good with the automotive/mechanic guys for the county soo if i dont got a tool they let me borrow it over night! its a hell of a good hook up and its all top notch quality stuff cus its for cop cars usually either it be from masks and protective glasses to hardware or even carb troubleshooting or gasket sealer that makes its own gasket, they helped me a ton its great connection!!

But anyway the bike is comin together fast now all i need is 2 more pieces for each carb (floats and seats/needles) aand im gonna fire her up here is a pic of it now! it rally looks better than i thought it would am very proud of my first street build from a visual perspective right now it looks bad ass!!!!!!!!

alright i put it all together except for the electric and the front light which i lost the damn square bolt for lol no biggie! check out the side panels. they r super reflective cus there made out of the same vynil as a yield or stop sign which is good since the bike is real dark and i took off all the other reflectors it will be hard to miss this big ass one!! and my original speedometer with the mileage next to my new smaller cafe speedo just in case i sell it. i will always keep my speedos to prove the exact mileage

I CANT WAIT TILL I FINISH THIS BIKE AND RIDE IT ALL YEAR ROUND WHEN I MOVE TO PHOENIX IN MID JANUARY... it came out better than i thought for my first bike i think i really found my niche with building bikes theres nothing else i would rather do for work for the rest of my life. i want to be a custom fabricator and make bikes from the frame up, own a racing team (motocross and superbikes) buy 250 acres and build my own long supercross trail with my backhoe bulldozer and bobcat which ill also build my huge in grown pool and mansions for all my family on... oh ill keep on dreaming pinch me in about 20 min the super models just got here to go swimming.............

Agreed. Doing a quick search on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=gr650+carbs&_sacat=See-All-Categories

And there is a pair of GR carbs missing some parts for $50. But the parts missing are still available.......for much cheaper than $200.

Generally speaking...
There were very few emission law changes between 81 and 83... So both gas caps probably have a one way check valve (vent) to let air in, but not out. This was for fuel to flow just as you thought, but keep hydrocabons (Gas Fumes) from venting out to the atmoshphere. I checked the part # for the cap on an 83 GR650XD but without knowing just what 81 model, I took a guess and went with the GS650G... It uses the same part number cap,44200-49810 so I think you are golden there... or should be.
Typically that second hose barb is not for a vent to the tank but for a vacuum hose from the carbs. (POS safety devise) If the engine is running (or cranking) vacuum is supplied to a diaphram on the OEM petcock and opens it. If the engine dies, vacuum stops and fuel is shut off. That's why they had a "Prime" position that bypasses the diaphram and opens it to get fuel to the carbs on initial startups after a repair or long period of setting.

i bought new carbs, the regular 36's, they r tuned and ready and also a brand new petcock now im stuck on wiring!!!!!!!

i need to put more coats of the brass colored sealer.. i love brass. when im making frames i want them to be Black pipe with brazed welds ya know what im saying? BRAZE IT UP HOMIE!!! BRAZE IT UP! lol looks cool as hell. i surprize my self this bike looks bad fuckin ass i cant wait to start MMI! Thats lava colored wrap by the way. the second pic is the lopsided hole in the seat which kept flooding the carbs out and is the reason the bike has only 724 miles unbelievably!!!

SOMEONE HELP! IM STUCK ON WIRING!!!! where r my main ground connections obviously the starter (-) is grounded i have everything ready to go and i cant get it to turn over! i need to complete the circuit HELP!!!!!!!!

If I recall correctly, the main ground goes from the battery terminal directly to the rear of the engine block (below the shock adjuster). There is also a thin ground wire that comes off the main ground wire, and has a single pin connector that ties it into the rest of the harness.

u guys r not gonna believe this i hooked up the break and clutch terminals and all i had to do was pull in the clutch and it turned over. all the wiring was correct i couldnt believe it. haha i put gas in and it started right up but there is a leak in the carbs. i have it on factory settings but i cut the pipes and put baffles in them and also put on a K&N filter instead of the original airbox how should i adjust my carbs for those customizations? once i fix the leaks in the carb if its still not idleing ill be looking at your suggestions thanx guys. i'll have a videop soon of it running once i fix the leaks cus i dont want my hard work to start on fire ya know lol.. I CANT THANK U GUYS ENOUGH THIS SITE IS INCREDIBLE. EVERY QUESTION I HAVE U GUYS WERE MORE THAN WILLING TO HELP ME WITH AND I AM FOREVER THANKFUL I LEARNED SO MUCH

Ah, I see. I was unaware you got the BS36's. Wise choice. A leak in the carbs can mean a lot of things actually - sticky float needle, sticky floats, bad bowl gasket, etc. If you can see the leak on the carbs, it's most likely the bowl gasket.

Carb tuning is a dark and mysterious art. Actually, it's just a lot of work. Nobody will be able to tell you for sure what your carbs will need, and you can't really find out until the bike is able to be ridden.
