1990 KZ1000 police cafe build

You are correct.
My point was if he wants carbs that will work well with pods, the older sets will fit the bill.

I wasn't correcting, I was suggesting.

Not enough words I guess...

Thanks. I'll keep my eyes open for some old ones. Too bad the carbs seem to be the first thing to go on junkyard bikes though. As for which pods, just generic washable dry pods; not oil filter elements like K&N.

Ah! My bad then, I hear what you are saying now ;) will the older sets fit the newer bikes (between carb distances)

KZ650, KZ750/4, KZ900, KZ1000, KZ1000j, KZ1100, GPZ750 and GPZ1100 all have the same carb spacing.

Sorry for the threadjack Roman, this is great info though! Thanks Nebr_Rex!

Hey, no problem! This is exactly the info I need, now it's all in a handy spot for my easy reference, haha. Thanks guys.

Well, I've been doing some other work to get my mind off the engine problems. Nothing special, just some more grinding, getting the frame ready for powdercoat. Cut down the rear section so my rear fender will no longer bind.

I'll bond these plugs in once the frame is finished.

HAHAHA!!! Give me a working motor, or give me death! I got it running, finally. Wasn't the carbs, wasn't ignition (not really), it was the bloody ground wire on the IC Ignitor. It was grounded enough to yield spark, but not good enough to run properly. Well I fixed that little PITA and it sounds mostly proper now. It idles too fast, around 3500, but I think with proper jetting and a good synch, it will be fine. Many thanks for all you guys who have been helping out this whole time. Here's a video:

Nice! sync's can really fix that, you'd be amazed at how far off most bikes are, even when they "sound" like they are sync'ed up!

Good job finding the grounding issue!

Congradulations!!!!!!!!!!!! I am so glad you were finally able to find the gremlin. It sounds so much better now. :)

Question for the masses: I've been searching for a 12000 RPM mini tachometer, either 2" or 2.5" diameter. I've seen plenty of 8000 and 16000 ones, but no 12000. Anybody know where I might find one? An electric one, not mechanical.

Nice. Thanks AutoTek.

So I've been playing with the idle, and am satisfied enough to start teardown. I'll post some pics as I go, nothing really spectacular though. Gonna start pulling it all apart tomorrow and send it off to get powdercoated. I've decided on matte black for the frame and stuff, and matte white for the tank and fairings with a simple stripe. Less is more in my opinion.

Also, I'm looking at the rejetting kits from DynoJet, does anyone have experience with them? Is it worth it to eliminate the guesswork from trying to tune my carbs from scratch, or does it only get me into the ballpark?

Ordered some new turn signals and air filter for the crankcase breather too.

I have used a dynojet kit on a dirt bike I had. It worked perfect right out of the gate. They do a lot of research and should be well worth it. Just my two cents. Can't wait to see how your project transforms.

Have one on my ZRX.
I'm step leaner on the mains using a Keihin jet,DJ jets are numbered differently from stock.
And one step richer pilot jet, not included in the kit.
Did this with the help of a K/N fuel ratio gauge that is still on the bike some 10 year later.
The gauge uses a one wire o2 sensor and will show comparable readings with a wide band o2 sensor in it's designed range.
I'm also using the same on Dr.Jekyll with very similar results.

Awesome, I'm going to call them tomorrow and see what they can do for me. Here's todays progress, feels good to make something happen again. Tore it all down to the frame again, getting it ready for powdercoating. I still have a little grinding and welding to do before I drop it off though. Going to break down the forks tomorrow as well, the seals are shot.

I'm excited to see some progress on this baby, can't wait till i have the time and place to do work on my bike.

So I broke down and inspected the forks today. Apart from the hideous existing oil and the blown seals, they weren't too bad. I Thought I had some fork oil to reservice them, but was sadly mistaken. Gotta wait till a shop opens to go buy some. I'm still going to clean up the sliders, they're sound internally, but the surface has seen better days.
