Re: 3DogNate's XS650 Bobber - Mocking 'er up now...
One more update before I quit for the day.
I went ahead and knocked out another dreaded item off the list. My mustang tank was equipped with a 3/8" NPT petcock bung and two 1/4" NPT bungs. The way my tank is oriented the 3/8" bung would leave a good 1/4 tank of fuel untouched. So I cut out the 3/8" bung and welded in a patch and topped that off with a little body filler. I'm going to run a pair of 1/4" petcocks.
So I am taking advantage of the awesome weather and getting my paint done... Sky blue metal flake.... I'll be adding a white accent stripe on the tank and fender before final clear coat.
Re: 3DogNate's XS650 Bobber - Mocking 'er up now...
So I've sanded and cleared the tank and fender one more time... Polished the right engine cover, polished the tappet covers... I am using a Pandemonium Choppers Ya Mamma exhaust. But I was worried that it was going to be ridiculously loud, so I cut off the turn outs on he exhaust ends and added 8" baffles and welded the turn outs back on. That should keep it a little tame at low RPMs but have a good bark (instead of a cackle) when I get on the throttle.
Next up:
sand the tanks and fender again and add a graphic stripe.
Give the carbs a go over and get them looking good too.
Make a gauge bracket
Install new brake pads
Measure and order brake lines
Wire it up
Get it running
Ride the shit out of it...
Okay, so I followed Airwolfe's (XS650 forum) lead on my exhaust. I am using the Pandemonium Choppers' Ya'Mamma exhaust... And in an effort to tame them a bit. I cut the turn out ends off and shoved an 8" baffle into each pipe and welded the turn out back on and followed up with some header paint and a titanium heat wrap. This should do the trick (hanging out to dry)
Re: 3DogNate's XS650 Bobber - Mocking 'er up now...
So I worked out getting rid of the left control cable choke with a right side push choke. Man, are the carbs a pain in the ass to mount on these bikes or what... Whew.
My paint hasn't been cut and buffed yet but I had to toss them on loosely to see what they on were going to look like on the bike...
I used a combination of House of Kolor and Custom Shop 2K Urethane from www.tcpglobal.com... Custom Shop Epoxy Primer> HOK Silver base > Custom Shop Sky Blue Flake > 2K Clear > Sand > Stripe > More 2K clear... there's near a quart of clear sprayed on that tank and fender.... Takes a LOT of clear to bury the flake.
I got out and have the wiring almost finished... just need to hook up the starter solenoid and wire the tail light and brakes, attach the clutch cable, bleed the rear brake cause it's a little spongy still, add fuel and I think she'll actually start. Maybe tomorrow evening or Fri... maybe I need to take Friday off. Ooh... need to pin the axle nuts too... < Reminder...
