I wanted to point out earlier that I'm using aluminum plate for the speedo mount - don't want to add more holes in it and make it any easier to bend. And anytime you wanna come out and build the bike is fine with me :D

Being that I was out and about all day with the family I didn't have nearly the time I wanted to work in the garage. But I did get the hole cut out for the speedo for a little visual fitment:

All the edges are rough as hell and the surface of the plate has about 1000 teeth marks from the vice but with some grinding, cutting, and polishing it won't look too bad. And yes, I know the edges aren't symmetrical. From this pic you can see how the speedo won't touch the headlight but the cable on the other hand is gonna be the problem.

I might see about cutting a notch out of the back of the bucket for the cable depending on any water flow/collection issues

How do you think it will bend and what will all be mounted there that you think it will see a lot of forces? How thick is it and what kind of aluminum? Any idea how much that speedo weighs, and how exactly is it mounted? I have my own projects to work on, but if you answer my questions I may be able to do a quick rendering in Solidworks to show you the deformation from various forces. I can't imagine cutting a hole on either side of the speedo will weaken it much if at all.

To solve your teeth mark issue, you could try slipping a small thin peice of wood between the jaws of teh vise and the aprt before clamping down. Depending on the shape of the part, the wood might deform enough to hold it in place while preventing any metal teeth from biting into your parts. Just use something soft like pine. I used to have some hin copper plates bent up to slip over the jaws and just hook onto the vise but I can't find them.

This is the best picture I could fins after a quick search on google, but I meant rounded speedo like this...
ACE-2853CP.jpg

I meant for the back of the speedo to be like a dome. If you can get one of these (obviously not the one pictured) then you may not have to notch anything.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

now that you have it mounted. It almost seems like theres no need for the flat alum top. Most people just rig up something discreet & underneath. Will you be adding idiot lights on the panel?

Re: 68 Honda CL175

I don't know the exact thickness of it off the top of my head (but it's REAL close to being as thick as a street sign) since I just had it laying around. I don't thing that the plate is gonna just droop down from the weight of the speedo, I'm more concerned with the "sail" quality of it being on the front of the bike. And all my idiot lights are included in the gauge itself so there's no need to drill for anything. Isn't that the same gauge from Miob's BMW?

I tried thinking of an easier way to mount something like this - removing the washers from the tops of the fork tubes and replacing them with this was the best I could think of. I probably could shave some of the flat spots from the front of it to hug the contours of the speedo a little more though...

I don't know the bike you are referring too since I first started being active on his forum less then a week ago. If you give me the answers to my questions posted above, then I can tell you how much it will bend at any speed you want. If you want to know 65mph, I can do that. If you want to know 120mph I can do that too. If you want, I can even tell you how much it will bend at 900mph. :) Just give me a rough estimate on that stuff.

So...
1/16" thick? (that seems awfully thin...)
Speedo weighs 2#'s?
distance between the center of the two mountings holes is roughly 6"?
It extends roughly 3.5" out from the center of the mounting holes?
The mounting bolts are 3/4" diameter?
Headlight is roughly 6" in diameter?
assuming it is mounted perpendicular to the forks the angle of attack won't be hard to figure out.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Wow... ::)

Its a speedo mount.

Wouldnt want to over think this would ya R.G.

What you have I'm sure is fine. Finish it, polish it and move on>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Haha

Re: 68 Honda CL175

you still have a vacant handlebar mount hole. That speedo looks light. Perhaps do half of what I did?

Brass toilet bolt kit works amazing on the 175. Its a perfect fit with the rubber gaskets & all.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

RG, if you look at the latest Bike of the Month nominations, that's where Miob's BMW is at. Thanks for the offer though. Its pretty cool that you are able to plug all that in and check the science of it, but when in doubt, overbuild!!

I probably will cut the sides down a little bit like I said earlier. That way there will be less surface area under the plate (and it will end up looking cleaner IMO)

Ill look into that Curb, thanks! I am trying to figure out what to do about that hole.

I'm just bored. I don't have the CL360 in my possession yet to work on that, and I'm waiting for paint to dry on my Camaro parts. All my homework was done on Friday, my little brother won't let me on the PS3, and all my friends are at work so I'm just going to go watch a movie now. :(

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Don't take it personal RG, Louie means well. And like I said, I do appreciate the offer.

So I was thinking about that mount, I'm not sure about having MORE polished metal in front of my face. What do you guys think about painting it?

Re: 68 Honda CL175

I didn't take it personal. I was just bored and wanted something to occupy my time. If I took everything people write on teh web seriously, I wouldn't be here now. I like to joke around and tend to find humor in pretty much everything. No feelings were hurt or anything like that. ;) I always feel that if things are worth doing, they are worth doing right. This is why I tend to do such detailed work on all the stuff I build. I can't bring myself to do a half assed job just so it is done. You would probably all think I'm nuts if you saw how much time I spent cleaning my car earlier this year. Below is a picture BEFORE I spent 9 hours cleaning the interior alone. I even took apart part of the dash to clean things.

I don't like chrome and polished aluminum isn't much more appealing to me. I would say rub it down with some fine sandpaper and call it a day. The brushed metal look always wind my vote. On a more serious note, I say the brushed look because the sun will shine down on all the polished stuff and bug you. If light is reflecting off it, it will also make it harder to read your gauges. Then again, if this will be the only brushed piece on the bike it will look weird. Same thing goes for paint... it's such a thin piece that I think it would just look odd.

Too late - had some time last night/ this morning / whatever and painted it with some silver paint. If it doesn't look right I can always sand it and redo it again though. Man, I'm exhausted. I'll post some pics later today of my up all night madness in the garage

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Rich - Where did you get your fork boots? I lost my original fork ears so the top of my stockers were too big to zip tie - also ripped them to shreds taking them off yesterday whilst rebuilding the fork.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Got them from 4WD Hardware in Columbiana, OH. They are the perfect dia up top but were kinda floppy on the bottom. Just had to cut the sleeve part off at the bottom and stretch the rubber over the fork. I think they are Daystar shock boots and about 8 bucks apiece.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Sweet man thank you!

The mock up looks awesome by the way! I meant to ask you and curb as well: whered you get that speedo? I wasnt planning on changing my speedo/tach combo but I would like to rock the one gauge thing. Is it cable driven? If not, how does it hook up?

Thanks brutha - cant wait to ride!

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Well, I got mine before I knew about MikesXS.com. So I payed about $30 more for the same thing from J+P Cycles. It is cable driven, has an insanely blue backlight, and all the dummy lights you need

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Been working the past couple days but got a little brainstorming done. Wanted to replace my skid plate with something and talking with Sean from RCC could've gone with fiberglass but didn't want to interupt his work with my crap job. Started out with the trusty cardboard mock-up:

IMG00565.jpg

Put some earplugs in and started cuttting and hammering some aluminum

The rest is just gonna have to wait til I'm off again.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

great... teaser photos. ::)

Why were these installed to begin with? Was the motor really "skidding" on much stuff? I'm wondering because I would think it would give the bike a cleaner look by going without it.

The Honda CL models were street and trail bikes. Made for mild off roading. That combined with the "sloper" setup which has no frame rails in front of the motor calls for some type of proection in fron t of the cases. Tak a look at the pic of the bike on page 6 and you'll see what I mean.

Re: 68 Honda CL175

Whoever rode this before me definately needed a skid plate. There's a close up shot of the original on page 1 of my build. Notice how it looks like somebody beat it with a log? Probably did - it's so bent up, welded up, and still cracked up that I don't think I could hit a cat without it snapping off. Next time i'm out in the garage I'll take a pic of the abuse that this thing was through.
