Really cool build man. Not sure where the hell I've been ??? No longer though I'm a signed up follower! I love thinking outside the box and I think if you keep at like this it will pay off for sure. i think the build is calling for more retro like tank pads and fork boots. I think the pads would be cool and would help break up the tank. I just bought a set of tank pads that I may or may not use...
since you're going to do the same theme tank you could do a white outline around a set of tank pads then have the same style number in place of the tank badges. or maybe put a single number on top with the tank pads outlined in white on the side. Just a thought...

I like it... Thats a possibility. I need to bondo some dents, and then Ive actually been thinking about doing the tank in layers. Grey primer, then green primer, flat white, black, than red. Just heavy enough to cover the previous color. Once thats on, I would do the same distressing. Just enough to look like its been rode hard and put away wet. I couldnt think of anything to break up the tank though. Knee pads would be killer, and really fit in with the racer theme. Lemm know if ya want to part with them! ANy pics?

I'd like to see a outline roughed in around the one as if it was all scuffed to fuck and when race day came you threw it on just to be able to see the number on the track. Might scuff the outline separately and lay it on in a couple of shades.
The thing with a good patina, IMO, is it has to tell a story. A lot of rat rods just look like crappy paint, but if you tell a story in your mind as you lay on and tear down each layer it is more real. I have never laid a patina on a bike, but I did stage paint and design for a while, and trust me it makes a difference.

Thanks man! Thats the thought behind it all. The bike has the wear and tear of a well loved but hard ridden 38 year old machine ya know? Everythings a little worn, and a little dinged up. Instead of actually replacing all that great history and memories, why not play to it? I didnt want to be like the hot rod guys who build a replica 32' and make it look like it was built in the 50s, I wanted to let this bike look like it had survived the last 4 decades without trying to dress up it like I was ashamed of its past! The race inspired paint is a tribute to the (completely made up in my head) visions of some 17 year old kid haulin' ass down the street on this thing in 71' like his name was Hailwood... I can imagine that kid imagining himself on the Isle or the banks of Daytona ya know? His little 350 all painted up like a real racer... Then he goes away to college and his Dad throws the bike under a tarp in the shed. The kid graduates, gets married, has kids and has forgotten about the bike long ago. Years later hes helping to clean out the old family property and finds her in the same spot his Dad left her all those years ago. Only when he pulls the tarp back, instead of a rusty old CB, he sees that custom racer he used to run against Agostini after school... This is meant to a tribute to that non-existant kid...Kanticoy said:

You can usually find knock-offs on ebay for like $15 or so. They are sort of one size fits all. I bought a pair for my 450 and they were a little big. I cut em down and they worked pretty well. They don't look perfect though.

I saw on guy on here running mountain bike gaters. There was a thread a while back, show your gaters or something of the like. I recall they had some good options.

HELL YA! A kid I know who races for vortex just called me to say that I can have his og rearsets for $25! There fron his 07 gixxer600. Its a track only bike now so he doesnt need em'. Fuckin sweet deal!
