'72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - Swingarm progress

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

OK, so I'm looking into some winter projects and have been researching everything under the sun for these 350's. One of which being oil cooling options. Most of which are really expensive and/or accross the pond. I did come accross something interesting today though, check it out:

http://stores.rustyriders.net/Detail.bok?no=218

The place is out of stock but I was wondering if anyone has seen this kind of thing before? Anyone got good info on oil cooling systems?

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

Looks interesting Bob. That said... I have a hard time believing that it would really affect the oil temp that much. Evenif it was designed ny a Nasa engineer. ::)

It still needs air flowing over it to work, and being that close to the motor (heat) with your leg in the way, I cant imagine it would provide any noticable cooling. I could be (and usualy am) wrong though.

And external cooler placed away from the motors heat and in the wind (aka Kileys setup on Gretta) is the best option. Though not simple or cheap. The oil pumps on these old girls arent exactly great. Not bad, but not great. Figuring out a way to hide an elec unit is the way to go.

I hear ya Mike. Also came accross this:

cant tell exactly where/ how the oil is getting dumped...

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

Pic one: Direct line from an aftermarket pump setup to the cam.

Pic two: Im guessing its a large cooler/pump where the ol starter once lived.

Actually VERY COOL.

Gives me some ideas...

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

looking at that bottom pic, does the chain originally connected to the starter motor turn while the motor is running? If it does could that possibly be a mechanical pump inside that cylinder? I like the use of the starter mount, it would be sweet if you could use the mechanics a well.

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

My thoughts exactly... No power (elec) draw. Would draw some power from the rotating assembly of the motor but it would be minimal. A custom "screw" type pump would be relativly easy to machine, using some roller bearings in a machined case. It could pull oil from the stock pmp location, and push it up into the feed lines. Could be a pretty simple setup actually...

Moto Capellini I believe are the source of those trick looking feeds etc.

As for the dip stick cooler - a complete waste of time and money IMHO. Checkyou oil temp before you add a cooler - they are not needed. The only advantage is the extra oil capacity and the cool factor. (all puns intended)

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

It has begun...

The smell of the air told me the 70 degree days were over for good, so its time to get working.

Seat, exhaust, speedo and misc. wiring removed, tank is emptied. Wheels and hopefully engine will be off tomorrow after work and I can get the frame up in the attic. Really hoping to get my hands on a CB450 front end soon so I can start figuring out the steering damper, if anyone has a 450 front anything, let me know (drum set-up preferably). Pics most likely tomorrow.

Also, lots of these parts are staying off the bike for good, so let me know if you're looking for anything 350 related, I probably have it. I posted a thread in the Selling section with details: http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=19644.0

Happy Halloweening.

Alright, trying to get/keep momentum going. It will most likely be a bit slow at the start since it looks like I might be moving BACK to philly after just moving to NJ so we'll see what kind of headaches/ wallet-aches this brings. Onward...

Engine on the "lift" draining the oil, prepping to break it down

sneak peek of the new front end, more shots when its more figured out

Super nice XL350 trees I picked up, turns out they wont work for what I'm going for so let me know if you want them

the reason they're not going to work. yea, double disks are NOT fitting between that:

Got plans for this guy, always hated the way they looked...

Frame stripped down, couple of simple mods planned for strength/rigidity. Thinking of making a hoop from flat stock to match the back end.

As far as the front end goes, I'll looking to take the stem of my CB350 trees and weld it into a XS650 triple, so If you've got a '77-84 triple just laying around let me know, I'll take it off your hands.

Looks good so far Bob. What's up with you moving back to Philly?

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

Don't the calipers mount on the outside of the forks?

not on the XS. The holes are tapped on the caliper, not the fork. And the calipers are shaped to only fit one way. It was tough to find a decent pick of the stock calipers mounted, here's the best I could find:

They dont even know what a cheesesteak is here. If I really missed groovy that much I'd be headed to Lancaster, isnt that right Leigh? haha. But seriously, the job that I moved out here for promtly fucked me over leaving me with a 12 month lease in an unfamiliar town and no guaranteed income. I could have work through the new year or could be out of a job tomorrow. So as long as me or the wife can land a full time job in the 'ol PHL, we'll be moving back ASAP.

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

Always plenty of jobs in Pittsburgh... Just sayin... ;D

I may be able to help ya out with the trees. Ill call ya later.

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - Front End Swap

Big Things happening! Over the past few weeks I've been collecting parts for the XS650 front end swap and I'm about 90% there. Got a bit of tweaking to do with the bearings but here's the skinny so far:

Idea for top mounted damper set-up using a 2007 GSXR damper ($10 eBay) and a fork mount from MikesXS ($22) Still working on placement and the other bracket

Also, plans are being finalized as we speak for moving back to Philly. New apartment is lined up including a sweet garage that will be space heated for the winter, new job at a fabrication shop, and people renting our NJ apartment so we can break that lease! Should be all moved in early to mid January. Woo!!

Re: '72 CB350 K4 - 'ol no.7 - I'm not done with her yet....

So here's the deal: The races of the XS650 bearings I got have an O.D. of 48mm. After pulling my old CB races out of the steering tube I measured and found that the top seat is 48.5mm and the bottom seat is 50mm, leaving undesirable play. Options I have thought of so far are making sleeve spacers (but of what/how?) OR contacting All Balls Racing and seeing if they will sell me just the races for their CB350 bearing kit.

Top bearings in place (not seated due to the .5mm extra space):

Poor picture of the 2mm extra space in the bottom seat:

Any and all comments and ideas are welcome as always!
