72 CB750: Dolores... 5 years later, I'm back to work!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

OH MY GOD! I lost the wheel on ebay. The thing stayed at 5.00 until right before the auction ended and it shot up to .50 above my final price. So the wheel conversion is on the back burner till I can find another decently priced rim. Grrrr... ebay.
I found stainless spokes for 16.95 a set, so that beats the hell out of buchanan's prices. I'm going to try to bend the mount on the taillights up a bit and move them back some to see if that helps minimize them. Pics as soon as I do it. I'm also having some wiring gremlins so that'll get sorted too.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

Sorry about the wheel. Ebay.

Where did you find stainless spokes for that price??!!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

the seat foam looks really awkward. it seems to thick in the back or something. the rest of the bike looks good!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

the pad is made of an old threewheeler seat I found in the trash and it's a bit thicker towards the rear... but my bum enjoys it fine. A new one piece pad is in the works though.
The spokes I found through tas classic motorsports on ebay. The price sounds too good to be true, but I'm gonna buy and let y'all know.
Also I'm bidding on another rim currently and i set my price a bit higher so we'll see.

LOL.. you sould like my Brother when he misses out on something on evilbay, Grrrr....LOL keep it up man looking good!..

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

Long time no work on the bike. Had to get kids back in school etc. My buddy Brandon (twisted_wheelz on here) and I tore my front end down last night and did some painting on the front wheel. I've got some new headlight ears in (black and cheap), and I'm hoping to have a set of clipons when the front end goes back together. I'll post more pics tonight but here's the still-taped front wheel with rust-o-leum black appliance epoxy paint. It turned out well so thanks for the paint tip go to JRK. Tonight I'm going to begin to clean my fork tubes. The stock gators and headlight ears hid a lot of nasty from me. I'm also going to replace the fork oil sometime this week and paint the fork lowers (probably the epoxy paint as well). I'm thinking about not running gators on my bike anymore, but we'll see when we get there. More to come as soon as it happens.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

Still along way from the goal, but it is really starting to come together! It is really going to be a different bike by the time we get it back together. I only expect the same help from you when it is time to build mine! Everyone stay tuned for the next episode.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

Great build! You've provided all kinds off ideas for my project.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... So much for being cheap!

Did some further disassembly and painting today. My bike's on the floor right now on jack stands, so my bike table has become a parts shelf...
projecttable.jpg

First I took the wire wheel and sandpaper to my chrome headlight bucket... Chrome no more! I sprayed it in black truck bedliner for durability and texture.
paintedheadlightbucket.jpg

Then I disassembled my guages to freshen them up. The back covers were extremely rusty, so I grabbed another set of guages out of one of my parts bins. The backs on these were much better, so they got sanded and prepped. Here's a pic of one of the old ones beside one the replacements.
rustyguagebacks.jpg

I sprayed the guage backs with good old Rust-O-Leum semi gloss black.
blackguagebacks.jpg

Next I taped off the guages to spray the bezels. Here's a before shot:
rustyguagebezel.jpg

Once they were sanded and prepped, I layed on some Krylon BarBQ paint. I love the finish of this paint, but it's durability isn't very good, so I'm only using it on parts that need heat-proof paint or stuff that doesn't get handled alot.
paintedguagebezels.jpg

Then I reassembled the guages. They turned out very nicely. I can't wait to get the front end finished and put back together.

Up next is probably the triple trees. Now that the front end is apart, I can see that they need to be cleaned, sanded and repainted. Also sometime soon the fork lowers will get their coat of the epoxy paint. I also need to change the fork oil whilst I've got this thing apart. The deadline is Sept. 20. I'm helping to organize a benefit ride/show for a coworker/friend of mine who lost his leg in a bike accident about a month ago. It'll be held at Oak Hollow Farms in Fairhope and I want to have my bike done in time to show it there. I'll post information on this event in the loungin section soon.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... Cheap As I Wanna Be!

Okay so Twisted_Wheelz came over yesterday and we turned wrenches late into the night. And my project became a lot bigger. We tore everything off of the bike minus the motor, wiring, battery box, and oil bag. We cleaned the frame and motor with Super Clean and set all of the parts on the table. Over the next few days I'm going to prep the frame for paint and tape off the motor and other non frame parts. Then we'll be spraying the frame with the epoxy paint most likely. That'll give it a nice shine to contrast with the flat black I'm planning on the tins. Also every thing that was pulled off the bike will be cleaned, prepped and painted before going back on. I'm going to spray my carb bowls with bedliner I think. The bedliner isn't bothered by gas, so it should work. Also we might tape off the jugs and paint them with some high-temp black. The swingarm will also be painted and the rear wheel. The fork lowers still have to be painted, the front fender still needs to be cut and painted. The forks themselves still need a good cleaning, and various other bits will be painted as well. Here are some pics of disassembly. It's hard to believe that this bike was ridable Thursday. The plan is to get it back together fairly quickly. Also I may order a new wiring harness since I found out that the old one was monkeyed with at some point.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... This is getting a little bigger than anticipated...

Just ordered my clip ons from partsnmore! 50 bucks shipped, I'm stoked! Thanks for the tip GoodforNothing!

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... This is getting a little bigger than anticipated...

So today I was roughing up the old paint on my top triple tree clamp to get it ready for paint when I decided to see what it looked like bare. Easier said than done, but after a lot of detail work with a wire wheel it looks pretty freakin good. It's got a nice brushed finish. So I'm going to go with the bare metal on the triples, but I'm worried about the aluminum oxidizing with time. Anybody know of a product that would prevent this? I was thinking of clear coat but I'm afraid it would yellow and chip over time. I'm going to have my frame taped off for paint by Tuesday, and after that I'll be trying to get the front end ready for reassembly. Here's a pic of the top triple clamp in progress.

More tomorrow.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... This is getting a little bigger than anticipated...

could you just use a pray can clear, and if it yellows pull it off and wire wheel and start again? i guess thats a pain the ass but its an idea

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... This is getting a little bigger than anticipated...

I use Aircraft Stripper for stuff like that. It's a bit messy, but leaves the metal untouched. Also, good find on the reservoir shocks. I paid $65 for mine but have seen them go for as high as $225.00.

use this for your aluminum. Claims to stop oxidation for 2 years.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... This is getting a little bigger than anticipated...

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to order a can tomorrow. Tonight I'll be painting the jugs on my motor, then taping the whole thing up to paint the frame. Pics tonight...

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... Handlin' My Bidness...

I got the jugs taped up and painted. That took a lot longer to prep for than I anticipated, but it looks great. Next I finished brushing out the top triple clamp and mounted the idiot lights to it to see how it all looked. Tonight Twisted_Wheelz and I are going to paint the frame (hopefully). Pics of that as soon as it's done.
My motor's got a shower cap!

I've got to go over the bolts in the clamp next.

Re: Alex's 72 CB750... Handlin' My Bidness

We got the frame painted last night. What a pain in the ass to tape everything off even with the foil. The paint looks great. We went with the epoxy appliance black again because of the insane gloss it has. Also cleaned the swing arm assembly very thoroughly. It will be getting the epoxy paint next. Here are a few pics:
This is the frame all taped up with the foil. It hadn't been sanded at this point.

Here she is with the paint on, the gloss looks very nice.

The swing arm assembly all cleaned up and ready for prep.

Also yesterday I found the cowl from an old outboard motor. It says it's a Sears Ted Williams 14 horse. Anyway when I spotted it, I immediately saw a tail section in it. I brought it home and when Brandon (Twisted_Wheelz) saw it he immediately got to taping off a shape, which we ran a quick coat of rattlecan over to help visualize the shape. It's going on the bike, So I'm going to have to fabricate another seat in the next few weeks. Here it is. What do y'all think? Kinda dunstall-ish maybe?
