72 CB750: Dolores... 5 years later, I'm back to work!

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

No I agree that I need a slider brace. Thanks to Godffery for the link to one that will fit. As far as the tweak bar though, assuming it still clears, is it wasted weight? And pj that exPlanation works for me, thanks dude.
Also to get the wings off I used an old guitar string behind them to pull them from a 350 tank.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

If you like tweak bar leave it on.
You could drill some holes in it though as it doesn't need to be solid.
You may be able to make it look a bit better?
To find minimum height for it you need to remove top nuts on forks then compress forks fully to see where sliders end up.
Fitting a slider brace wll change things though

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Godffrey, thanks for that link, I'll be using it in the near future.
And not trying to split hairs, but the part number you listed is 22-0030 but you linked to 22-0037. The 37 looks to be the "taller" one.

Re: 72 CB750: Dolores... A few things I've been doing.

Whoops, thanks.
The taller one would wrok better for early model K (pree 77).

It's been 5 years since I posted an update. Wow!
I dug up this build thread from the depths of project purgatory.
My son, Rob, is now 19 and he bought himself a motorcycle a couple of months back. I've been without a running bike for maybe 4 years. Life just got busy. My wife and I built our small business into a monster that consumes most of our time these days and motorcycles just fell to the back of the priorities list. As a surprise gift, my wife took the money we got from selling my 1987 Volvo 240 wagon and bought me a 1995 Honda Nighthawk 750. Best gift ever.

Having another 750 made me start wanting to get Dolores back on the road. The first part of that was cleaning out my bike shed, which had been gathering junk for 5 years. After that was cleaning and jetting my carbs. I bought a jet kit from 6Sigma Racing before I mothballed the bike. The carbs weren't too dirty inside as I drained them before putting her to sleep. An idle jet broke while putting them back together, so I'm waiting on that to arrive in my mailbox before putting the carbs back on.

Once they go back on I'm going to clean the bike thoroughly. I also sprung the money to have my seat pan professionally padded and covered.

It took about a week to get it back, the cover looks good and the pad is quite comfortable. It beats the hell out of the 20 year old three wheeler seat pad that Brandon and I cut up to make the last one anyway.

The job cost me $250! That's the largest single purchase I've ever made for Dolores. When I went to pick up the seat, the owner of the shop was not in. As his assistant was ringing me up I noticed that the paint had been chipped and scratched in a few places on my cowl. The assistant said he couldn't do anything about that, so we called the owner. He would not admit to having damaged my seat and would not come off of his price at all for the damage. Not really that big of a deal since I rattle bombed it myself, but also not cool. Here's the damage.

I've been assembling parts for the bike for a while so I only need to buy a few more things to get her back on the road(I hope). Those things include a new chain, a new battery, a slider brace ($$$), and new oil and filter. I will be shortening the cables and a few other small things. Other than that I'll be leaving her as is. She'll be a dirty girl this time around.
Here she is with the factory seat back on while the solo seat was away...

And here she is with the new freshness on.

Seat looks really nice man. That sucks about the chips and scratches. It's stuff like that that makes me want to do everything myself, ha.

I know man, and back in the day I would've never farmed anything like that out. But now I just don't have the time to devote to learning a whole new craft. But I am happy with the seat and we're only talking about a couple of hours to fix the damage. If that dude had cut me $20 off the price no one would have ever heard about it.
I'm hoping that once the idle jet comes in and I get everything hooked back up she'll run again in short order. She was running when I tore her down. I do have a small oil leak on the jugs, but since I won't be pulling the motor until her next tear down I'll have to keep an eye on it. The plan right now is to get Dolores reliable then start the build on the nighthawk. It's a fine bike, but things bother me. The tank sucks, the rear suspension is shit, the seat is shot. So I have decided to ride the nighthawk until Dolores is a rider. Then I'll decide what to do with the nighthawk; mild refresh or complete rebuild... We'll see. I've already got shocks and a tank picked out.

I hear you. It's just the principal of it. I have made up a few seat covers and had my mother sew them, I can't sew worth a damn. They came out pretty good, I'm fine with sitting on em but it's a LOT of work for sure.

I know. I loved the Professor but he was a third wheel. Not reliable enough for daily duty and just taking up a parking space. It got harder and harder to justify owning it. Also my wife wasn't terribly fond of him.

My first car was an 88 DL240 in silver with the blue velour interior. Thing was a tank. Same car was actually my wifes first as well (long story). Was really bummed that we had to get rid of it, but it was abused for years before I got it and was too far gone to keep on the road at the time.

The Mrs still insists that some day when money is a little better she's going to get another Volvo. She wants a wagon around the same vintage as yours in forest green with tan interior. I look on CL all the time for a solid no rust version. Figure that if I can get one cheap now, I'll have the time to get it reliable and clean before her current car shits the bed in a few years. No such luck though.

Anyhow... Thread jack over. Back to the regularly scheduled CB750 awesomeness. Lol...
