So I'm kinda a newbie to bike modification, so forgive me if this is kinda a stupid question, but all the welding and grinding on the frame, do you worry about the heat taking strength away from the frame? Is there some way I'm unaware of to keep the metal tempered just right?

Also how did you prep the metal between the fins on the engine for paint? I got mine clean with a steel brush but I don't know that I'd say they're clean enough for paint.

It's mild steel, only need to worry about hydrogen embrittlement at weld, it isn't heat treated or heat treatable

very cool to know.

Okay, in an effort to get to where I can get the frame off to be blasted and powder coated, I brought the frame inside to my basement shop since it just too friggin hot out in the garage right now. And started on the seat. I think I've got the seat and bump how I want them. I wanted to play off the flattened side of the cb360 tank. See what you think before I start laying up fiberglass.

Re: '74 CB360 cafe project - Working on the frame now.

I personally like a more agressive look tapering up from the rear toward the highest point near the seat back. But it's all preference. Lines look good if you like that style of seat.

Re: '74 CB360 cafe project - Working on the frame now.

Well I decided that I liked what I had going on with my seat so I added a transition hump at the seat/tank join. And committed to the thing by laying up the first two layers of fiberglass. I'll add two more layers tonight and after that dries I'll pop it off the mold and add a couple of chopped mat inside to give it strength. I'll try to snap pics tonight. (Fingers were too goopy with resin to take any last night. :)

Edit: photos added of the first glass layers.

Was able to pop the shell off the mold last night.

Now, while I've got the frame ready for glass.... I went ahead and did a reshape on the bump for a more sloped bump. (Easier to take away than to add I do think) I've got plenty of glass and resin, so I'll lay up another seat with this hump. and go with what looks best in the end.

I take it you have worked with fiberglass before that looks dope dude

Nope... that was my first time ever. Thanks though. Using a roller seemed to give me the best results.

You say you used a roller for the resin... Genius

I finished up seat 2 and I think it's a keeper. I think it works nice with the tank shape.

agreed. Your shop looks pretty high tech man i am just a hillbilly with a couple screwdrivers and a mallet.

Re: '74 CB360 cafe project - (Seat Fabrication Underway)

that is one of the best ways I have seen for doing a perfectly fitting seat!

Great build so far, I will keep my eye on this one ::)

'74 CB360 cafe project - (Seat Fabrication Underway)

Got the seat under the first couple of coats of primer today... I think I'm done with it until I am ready to paint. Gonna start on the wheels and front end shortly. I ordered spokes for the front and rear, so re-lacing spoke wheels is going to be added to my list of "firsts" on this build. Temperatures are supposed to finally get under 100 tomorrow. The garage has been unbearable.

Okay, one more shot of the seat and tank all together with the tank all in the same primer. (I might just be proud of it.)

Great job! I wish my 1st go around was as productive.... It was crap/trash!

Re: '74 CB360 cafe project - (Seat Fabrication Underway)

Ok... so I'm getting the frame cleaned up and and parts ready for the blaster and for powder...

I ordered new bronze bushings for the swing arm. Now... what's the best way to get the dust caps and steel bushing out??? Violently is the only way that I see happening.... any advice?

Re: '74 CB360 cafe project - (Swing Arm Bushing Question)

There might be a better way to do it, but a punch and hammer worked well for me. Then put the new bushings in the freezer to help them contract and pressed them in with a vise.
