'74 CB360 -- Eos -- and a NEW BIKE!

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner -- Hurry! Quick Question!!

The tensioner in your pics is the early type that was part of a recall.
You should have contacted Honda direct, maybe they still have one or two just in case a recall bike turns up that did'nt get it done?
Both of my1974 360's have 'new' part
I have copy bulletin from 1970's, shouldn't be too difficult to find as it's been posted a few times on different sites
DOT recalls never expire (a minimum amount have to be done in a specified time though)
not sure if it was a Honda recall to prevent DOT one?

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner -- Hurry! Quick Question!!

Well, Maybe I'll still do that. If they can send me one I'll just put it back up on eBay.

Thanks PJ

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner

So after walking the dog in the cold snowy weather, I wandered into the garage turned on the tiny space heater and got to work. I have been working on getting the entire motor cleaner than clean. I had been having trouble getting the old Honda Bond off the outside and inside :-\ of the case as well as gasket material on the outer covers. While picking up my gasket set at the Honda shop I asked about it and the guy told me paint stripper. Got home shlepped some Aircraft paint stripper around the edges...Binga Bango, like new. Everything looks really good and after putting in all the guts seems to turn better than ever! Smooth as butta. Some shots...

So fresh and so clean.

Tomorrow, the lower case and buttoning her up.
Tonight...Work...I don't ever suggest being a barback!

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner

Another Ebay Tragedy Indeed. We here it all the time... Parts not coming as described...IT SUCKS. I get out of my class and am super stoked cuz my lady texts me about a big heavy package in the mail. It's my new heads and head cover! So I rush home open it up and you can imagine to my surprise...a shitty part. The journals look shot to me, you guys let me know if I'm wrong! fins are broken, chips and dents everywhere. It looks like the cam shaft got loose of the journals somehow and banged up the oil bathtubs (new name for this?) Anyways check out what I got in the mail...

shot down the journals.

Journals. Notice the corners. pretty much round.
CIMG5604.jpg

Dunno if you can see it well but there is a big gash in the middle journal that is in better focus.

CIMG5617.jpg

Even Metal Shavings!
CIMG5619.jpg

Oil bathtubs.

More dents/gashes

CIMG5613.jpg

Head cover! This is bad!
CIMG5621.jpg

Both together!!!!
CIMG5623.jpg

I made sure to ask the questions needed to be asked and his response was "the cylinder head is good with goo dvalves and no pitting in the journals or bearing surface pitting or burn marks or scorring" So I will be filing a complaint with this seller. I'll give him a chance to refund me first. I'm still on the hunt for a GOOD head cover and cylinder heads (although i don't NEED the cylinder heads)!

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner --- Bad Ebay Seller Strikes again!!!! so upset!

Damn dude. Im no expert but I would say that head is junk. I can't believe people sell shit like this. What do they think is gonna happen youre gonna get it home and never open it. sorry man.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner --- Bad Ebay Seller Strikes again!!!! so upset!

Hey at least you got point plate screws with it! LOL sorry man had to try and see some positive in it all.

I agree, looks pretty average. May be resurrected by a good head shop? Cost, probably more than its worth. Apart from that you could have done the same with your original head...

Man it blows when you get home to new bits and they are junk.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner --- Bad Ebay Seller Strikes again!!!! so upset!

Geez, that's disgusting. Sorry to hear about your dilema. Maybe there was some kind of mix-up and he shipped out the crap head? I doubt it too, but good luck man.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner --- Bad Ebay Seller Strikes again!!!! so upset!

Head isnt too bad, most of the 'damage' is normal Honda casting.
looks like thrust washer on cam shaft may have been left out though?
Generally, if the rocker pads are good, its all good.
The 'goo' inside rocker cover is original Honda sealer, not 'bad', you have no idea how many of these things ran real well even though thrown together as fast as possible by factory
If you can get some decent pictures (i.e. in focus) I could probably tell more.

No problem thanks for checkin' it out!

So while I'm getting the whole Ebay debacle figured out I have some questions for ya'll

I plan on buttoning up the case Thursday, before doing so, however, just wondering if anyone has used Hondabond 4 (recommended by the guy at my local honda shop) in -10 degree weather...probly not... just seein' if I need to bring it inside to warm up a bit in order to settle right.

Also, about the oil seals in the case. Do I honda bond those also? or try to avoid getting on them, they already seem to have old liquid gasket on 'em just making sure this is right.

There was more, but I forgot...I hate when that happens.

Peace!
-Berner

ps. I'm working on a name now that she's starting to take form. I'll let ya know when I figure it out.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner ---

sounds like its coming along. i read somewhere that laquer thinner will take of Yamabond. i think youre past the cleaning part, but thought id throw it out there. now its time for my dumb question: when you say Honda dealer, are you talking Honda cars or honda motorcycle dealer? cuz i cant find a dedicated honda mc dealer. only ones that deal with several brands and they are fairly useless when it comes to old steel.

The place I have gone to a few times up here is Honda Town, and they are a dedicated honda dealer, Motorcycles, Scooters, ATV's...although they do sell Arctic Cat ATV's and Sleds. Cool place.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner ---

I just put my cases back together last week using Hondabond HT I put it ev everywhere I found traces of the old sealer. This included the two seals at the end of the tranny shafts. I'm pretty sure this is correct, but you may want to shoot SwapmeetLouie or Nate a message to see for sure. I brought my cases inside to the basement to do them at "room" temp.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Berner ---

I finally got around to getting some motor bits painted. I had to spray the valve cover 3 times cuz it sucked the first 2. And after going through 3 different sets of cylinder heads and head cover I finally just went to the junk yard and pulled a pair off a bike. Turns out they are perfect. I even snatched the tension slipper and cam chain guide off it. They are worn but in decent shape if anyone needs 'em. I also got the engine cases together. Another thing I did was fill the Honda logo on both the stator cover and right crank case cover. I'm gonna either paint or etch the name of my bike where "Honda" was. I'm calling my bike Eos, after the Greek Titanic Goddess of the Dawn. She's the one who opened the pearly gates so Apollo could ride his chariot across the sky everyday... My girlfriend is VERY Greek, she kinda got me into it, either that or the Kalamata Olives and Feta Cheese (I'm currenty drooling). Here are some photos.

I'm on my way to the garage in a few to bring the lower end of the motor in for paint.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Eos --

project looks great!

is the top half of that crankcase in the background resting on the cylinder studs? bad idea if you ask me. they can handle the weight, but if that thing were to fall you would have to get new studs.

Thanks man! Yes it is resting on the studs. On a tv tray table thing, not the strongest, but it's been working. It's actually out in the garage right now like that with paint on her.

I sprayed it last night. I wiped it down with soapy water then with acetone, then me and the roomy carried it out the garage. I wiped it down with acetone again to be safe taped everything up, and started sprayin'. It didn't turn out as well as I expected. There must have been a little puddle of something still hangin' around on a quarter size spot and the paint didn't stick so well. I wiped it up when I saw it and gave it some more....looks okay...but I'm hoping the paint won't chip.

Re: '74 CB360 -- Eos --

Long overdue update. Lot's got done.

Fiberglassed my seat. I think it turned out pretty well. Anyone have a suggestion on trimming it up? I'm thinkin I'm gonna use my cutting wheel.
CIMG5647.jpg

CIMG5648.jpg

I also had my frame welded up a bit...
to replace the rear hoop.
CIMG5649.jpg

and to fix a crack
CIMG5650.jpg

been doing some sprayin'
semi gloss head cover with low gloss valve caps
CIMG5651.jpg

Clutch side cover with no sign of Honda stamp logo
CIMG5654.jpg

Same thing with the stator cover
CIMG5646.jpg

Motor is assembled for the most part and painted. I just got done putting a new rotor on...that was a bitch to get off let me tell you what!
CIMG5641.jpg

CIMG5643.jpg

The copper coat I've been using for the gaskets seems to work pretty well! And it looks kinda cool showing through the black!

I also got some bike pegs and aluminum to start my rear sets. The bike guy at wally world gave them to me for free.
CIMG5652.jpg

Gotta go... Chicken Wing night and cheap beer at the bar. Let me know what you think! I love suggestions!

Thanks!

Berner

Re: '74 CB360 -- Eos --

Looking great dude! JB weld works its magic again! And yes all the way to the cut off wheel on the seat. That's what I always do!

Re: '74 CB360 -- Eos --

Thanks man, I rough cut the seat the other day, I love my cutting wheel :)

Anyways, while I'm waiting for the oil filter remover socket to come in (picture below). I plan on making some purchases, but I need some opinions:

I'm thinking about replacing the steering head bearings? I've read little about the tapered bearings but still don't know a whole lot as to what to buy (size/taking measurements, etc.)

I've also read about bronze bushings in the swing arm. Is there a huge benefit to installing these?

I also bought paint! For the tank I'm going with a Dark Red Mica and glossy black:

And the Frame Gris Pilbara:

Let me know what you think!!!

Re: '74 CB360 -- Eos --

Those two upgrades you mentioned, bearings and bushings are the first two things that should be on the list for any rebuild. they not only improve safety by vastly reducing front end "play" or "wander" and reducing rear suspension flex. The bikes end up not only safer but more fun too! Combine these upgrades with modern tires and the handling is night and day. And its cheap too, not like having to dish out two or three hundred bucks for an ignition upgrade you can get these parts for about $70 total.

Check out All balls bearings. I think they also have rear bushes for the 360.
