Thanks jk, the kind words are appreciated, man!

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special"

Wow. I just went through all 83 pages of your thread and I am blown away by the immeasurable detail of your work and creativity of your hand. Awesome bike man. This build has given me so many ideas and motivation for my build. Congrats on completing the bike and ride safe!

OBSESSED with this build thread... bravo on all the styling cues you used, very tasteful, super clean and awesome. What specific muffler did you go with? I like the shape and size and am having a difficult time finding a good working muffler that would look AND sound good.... much appreciated.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special"

Ludacity, thank you!

Johnny, the silencer is a Harris racing can. It's completely open and unbaffled, and as such I chose to weld a baffle into the pipe behind the collector for a little back pressure. If you just want bolt-on, I'd recommend something that muffles a little more...

But here ya go:

Edit: I think the one above might actually be baffled. On the one I got, the "Harris" badge said "racing" as well, and the papers that came with it stated it wasn't street-legal:

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

I weighed her today. 360lbs wet, well almost wet, tank was 80% full. Subtracting the fuel and oil weights, that puts us at about 330 lbs dry. A stock '75 cb550 weighs 420 lbs dry. 90 lbs shaved off!!! Wow. I have to say, that's more than I thought I saved.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Like I said earlier man...that is a huge savings!

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Man, that's awesome! What a major difference in weight.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

I Bet that actually is a lot of performance gain..

Horse power to weight ratio, do the math, effing Huge!!

How'd you weigh it?

ive been wondering how he weighed it myself...

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

On a light enough bike, you can use a bathroom scale. Roll the front wheel on, take the measurement, roll the back wheel on, and combine the two.

But knowing that T71 works on all sorts of heavy duty equipment, I would guess he has a large scale at work.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Sorry guys, read this earlier but forgot to answer. I weighed it with a bathroom scale! Front then rear and add them up. Simple as that...google it if you're curious about the accuracy.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Hah, just beat me, Rich. Yeah I bet Tyler could weigh it at his shop, but the bike was down recently from a fried battery, so I weighed it during the downtime.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Ha! Perfect timing.

We use a larger scale at work to weigh semi-trucks. Same concept though: measure the weight on each axle, then add them all up for the total weight.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

I was getting a little bit of shit from one of the guys over on SOHC4.net about my bike weight. He couldn't believe his cb500 race bike weighed a mere 10lbs less than my street legal 550, so I got out the camera. ;D Anyways, thought I'd paste it over here too...to quell any doubters!!!! Haha

Let me say, it was no easy task holding the bike upright for an accurate measurement while taking the photo!

And to judge the scale's accuracy. I regularly weigh in on the medical scale at work around 175lbs, fully clothed. So here's a discrepancy of 2.5 lbs. ;)

As I said, the tank is down roughly a gallon of fuel (5gal tank), so that's (+/-)4 gallons x 6 lbs/gal = 24 lbs. 3.4 quarts of oil at 1.875 lbs/qt = 6.375 lbs... so all in all, 30 lbs of "wet".

182 (front) + 175 (rear) = 357 lbs, wet. Add that 2.5lb discrepancy to the front and back, and we have 362 lbs. ;) Minus 30 for fluids...332 lbs dry.

I can't tell you exactly where every little bit of weight was lost. Extreme weight-loss wasn't one of my main goals for this build, it just happened in order to fit the bike to my vision. And as such, I've never weighed the composite pieces, so I can't say how they compare to stock (obviously they must have come out lighter).

I'm no magician, but I'll chalk it up to the magic of fiberglass...and losing as much of the original bike as I could. :)

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

I've got to go and weigh mine now.
I blame you.
;)

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

Ha cool. Jsut the stock fenders exhaust etc. weigh a friggin ton on these old bikes. I lightened mine quite a bit just removing the few stock bits that I did. Enough to feel it when you take it off the kick stand. Good Job. Imagine what iyou could doo if you seriousely thought about it and shaved weight everywhere. Like bolt heads, speed holes etc.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

If you still have the stock parts you remeoved box em up and weight them, just for fun and see what you get, you could then guess the weight of the composite bits pretty easy.

Re: '75 CB550 - the "Le Mans Special" - she lost 90 lbs on her diet

I'm a believer. My goal was 100lbs. on my 650. I'll be lucky to get 80. It's all in the right direction. I saved 28 lbs. with my front wheel choice. The rear was 10 lbs. I didn't weigh all the items removed from the frame but that could be another 10 lbs. These older bikes weren't designed with the same mindset as today's. If you have a before and after riding impression, I think you have a big grin!
