'75 CB550K1 Gulf - Round...3, the fun stuff

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

ok, so back to the brakes real quick....
are you running both calipers on two piece lines? or did you ditch the brake switch?

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

I did ditch the switch. I'm running two separate lines from the MC, which has an integrated switch.

Also, check your dual disc thread on DWMS, got some more info for you. At least I think my post is there, the site seems to be having some trouble loading right now. Edit: it's back up now.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Ok, well I broke down today and heeded good advice. I called up Race Tech and ordered a set of .80kg single rate springs. I'm pretty excited to give them a try. And just because updates are better with photos:

That's the belly pan plug with it's first coat of paint. Now it's on to sand/paint/sand/paint/sand/paint. It will be ready to make a mold soon I hope. Also, the front fender plug is sitting next to it. Little more work to do on that one...

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Not much going on here, but if I don't post this photo, I'll forget about it.

As I said earlier, the front fender will be mounted to the fork brace only. To keep it from flopping around (curved fender, flat brace), I'm custom fitting it to the brace, which involves piling on a bunch of body filler and pressing the brace into it. Well, there's a little more than that, but you get the gist. A little sanding and smoothing and it should be ready to make a female really soon.

The belly pan plug is 99% done. I'm just chasing pinholes now, and a female will be made from it in a few days I hope.

The Race Tech springs also came in, and were installed with 1" or preload. Once the bike's a roller again, I can dial that down if needed to get the right sag.

I also swapped my chromed steel clipons for some billet ones with aluminum bars.

A gsxr MC is on it's way, as the MC I have won't work with the new clipons...plus it ought to help with the dual discs.

Tygon fuel line also showed up. I'm done with the nasty clear fuel line that hardens after a couple months.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

sweet man, im loving how your setting up that front fender.
can we get pics of the bars?

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Sure thing Josh. Standby.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Here you go sir. Combined weight of both is about the same as one of the steel clipons.

Also, I just picked up my headlight brackets that I had a machine shop cut out of 1/4" aluminum plate. You've got to be kidding me. I just chuckled and walked out.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

OMG, what did they use to cut them out? I could probably accept that kind of job from someone backyard builder in their own garage, as a rough cut that would be cleaned up, but that is brutal for a machine shop.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Haha, right? It looks like they used a plasma cutter. Honestly I wasn't angry, I just couldn't stop laughing. But like the saying goes, if you want something done right, do it yourself. They cleaned up really nicely, standby for pics.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

And here we are after a healthy amount of cursing, grinding, filing, sanding and bead blasting.

They will get stainless fasteners, and I'm debating bead blasting the aluminum clamps to match. Not sure why they're yellow, must be a protective coating, but they are aluminum...

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

The amount of work you had to do on those headlight brackets, you would have been better off buying some quarter plate and making from scratch.
Use a 1/8" drill bit and 'chain drill', run through the drilling with hacksaw, file and 80 grit flapwheel will get things nice and smooth
It couldn't be any harder than cleaning up the crappy plasma cuts
Before I had a mill I used to do 1/2"~ 3/4" 6061 plate as I described

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

Well, I tried to cut them out with a dremel (I don't have anything better) but it wasn't happening. So I took them to a shop...
All in all, it wasn't much more than an hour or so.

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

WOW.....my standard for parts made are way too high! That's just nuts...what did they charge you for that?

Re: '75 CB550K Gulf - emulators: one oxidized

I'm pretty ashamed to say...$20.

So yeah Lee, kinda the opposite end of the spectrum that I was talking about in the PM. But...that's life I guess. Ha ha!
