'77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (buyin' stuff)

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

I have a chainguard if you still need one. Better get that frame sorted first. Pm if interested

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

crunching the numbers. quite literally: should i stay, or should i go. i know what straightening costs. I'm working to compare that with replacement frame options, title or no tilte. If I go w/ straightening, i literally have to put the dodgy front back together and get it down to the shop that can do it. If I go with a "free" frame, the cost to ship, and possibly re-title, offer a competitive, but not overtly cost-saving option.

This is basically, as far as I can tell, a $600 problem

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

if you could anchor that frame to the floor in an upright position(the way it's sitting on the lift) on one side of the garage, put a shaft of some sort through the stem housing & then attach a come-a-long to the floor on the other side of the garage & pull the shaft sideways at floor level, you might have something... i'm thinking a few 1/2" drop in anchors, some allthread, nuts & washers... you might have something... whatever you do, make sure it's solid... i know i'd hate to see a frame coming at me from across the garage... just an idea... for $600, it's worth a try.

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

Score-ing (tomorrow) a 77 frame from a local source (yes, i will share if it all works out). So, after I tuck in my daughter tonite, everything I can un-bolt is coming off of Scrapple I. Once I pick up Scrapple II, I'll have a better idea as to what the hell I'm trying to acomplish.

I'll keep the Scrapple I frame, for now. Pehaps someday there will be a better mousetrap for fixing these kinds of issues.

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

I'm following, too. I'm in Chester. Sounds like your getting things worked out pretty well.

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

Sounds like you may still come out of this alive and reasonably solvent! Following your progress with interest to see where it all may lead. Hope it works out OK for you. I'm up in Charlottesville and am just starting a '79 XS650 cafe build.......my raw material is quite a bit less problematic, though!

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

Thanks everyone. You do know this is, quite literally, the blind leading the blind, right?

Re: '76 CB 550k "Scrapple" -Richmond VA (tearing in down)

Ok, enough of the fun and games. First, where I was:

Pro Class Cycles, Richmond VA: http://www.proclasscycles.net/

What you need to know: This ain't a place to find anything that'll make your bike look pretty. I'll post some of the pictures from other things that were in the yard, but as you can see, things are pretty well picked over once something is put outside. On top of that, My project is now one of those projects where I'll need to figure out the Virginia DMV for the purpose of titiling what I found.

What I did find was a 1977 CB550f (Super Sport!) that a) didn't have a lot on it, and b) looked arrow-straight as far as the frame went. So, of course I didn't get the "before" picture, but as you can see, if you bring your tools, and and have the slightest idea of what you want to do, you can pull off whatever you want.

So, onto the show:

My FIRST engine pull, and only one smashed pinkie

A very respectable pile of parts that I did pull off, many of them in better condition than some of the stuff I'm working with:

This Yamaha something-or-other reminds me that there's a neglected '84 Fj600 that would like some attention, too:

I'll call it the best $75 motorcycle education I've ever had. Funnier still, its amazing how CLEAN Scrapple I was by comparison. I do, in fact now have one serious project.

Re: '77 CB500k Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Good find. I need to find a couple of motorcycle junkyards and do some searching. Good luck with the rest of the build.

Re: '77 CB500f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Legitimate question. Media blast NOW, so that I have a level playing surface, or place my hands over my eyes in regards to all of the surface rust and grind away (that is, once I buy a grinder)?

I could spend the rest of the winter (trying) to get the rust to go away. I think this would help me in the long run, and besides, poweder-coating the frame is unlikely for the first build go-around. Any weld-ons (ala the DCC cafe hoop) would likely be primered and rattle-canned anyway.

What kinds of costs am I looking at? (yes, I know this is a phone call or two away)

Re: '77 CB500f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

It all depends on how much it costs in your area to have it media blasted. It is obviously going to cost you to have it blasted but you could put time in yourself and just grind it (wire wheel). As long as you do a good job on the grinding you should be able to look at the frame and see if there are any structural issues. If you plan to paint the frame black, silver, or white, you could use rattle can appliance epoxy and paint the frame yourself. It is very durable. If you look in my thread, it is the paint I used on my wheels and other bits.

Re: '77 CB500f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

I did. I have a quote from a local source that I can live with: $75/hr, estimated time 30-60 minutes. Sounds reasonable to me, so off with the triple tree, centerstand and swingarm. We're going to the beach

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Kickeroo, I've never even heard of Pro Class Cycles. I take it they didn't let you walk through their 9600 square foot warehouse?

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

I didn't even ask, since what I was looking for was in the boneyard. After using more skills I learned from middle-school wrestling camp than from anything gleaned from my BS in mechanical engineering, I was a bit too tired to ask for the guided tour. Still, I'm allowed to go back anytime, since I was neat about my work, and contained any oil that dripped out of the 77's dead engine with the rear fender of a CR80 that was lying about.

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Haha glad you found what you needed. I'll have to check them out next time I'm home.

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Man I wish they had a place like that here where I live. Of course then I wouldnt be home much :)

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

last update for January 2011. New frame is to be stripped and primered. Soon to be on order (by 2/8) are as many bearings, fittings, seals and replacement parts i can think of (at least from te cross-referenced frame/wheel diagrams between a 76 and 77) in order to make this a rolling chassis by no later than 2/28.

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

Well, I tried out CLR on the rusty springs and "C" retainer for the centerstands, as well as the rear brake pivot arm off of the '77. HOLY CRAP. There's still SOME rust on the pivot are and springs, but the results are freking amazing. However, at $5 a quart or so, it's not economically solvent.

Anyway, enjoy the picture of the Official Mascot of Project Scrapple...or an $8 piggy bank wearing RAF goggles.

Re: '77 CB550f Super Sport "Scrapple II" -Richmond VA (back to square ONE)

The budget is for Scrapple II has compete with a total suspension upgrade of my Turbo Beetle (stop laughing). Anyway, I thought I'd try some rust removal on some of the parts that could use it. First: the before shot of the footpeg:

rustandbox001.jpg

and after, 9 hours left in an old Utz pretzel bucket with a 2-1 ratio mix of CLR to water:

It works, but it's not very cost effective, since a quart of CLR runs about $5.50.
