My next decision is wether to polish or paint my triple clamp. I had sprayed it black, but then decided to smooth it out and remove the risers. It could look very nice polished, or the black contrast on the now polished forks may be nice...

I also received my headlight and brackets from DCC today. Everything looked great, except the headlight brackets were a bit long for my taste. After trimming those up I threw the bike together for a few quick photos.
Today's task was the exhaust. I started with the factory header pipes.
For my design I needed them to match. The angles of the top bend were also slightly different. I ended making a relief cut to allow the pipe to bend, then welded the cut.
After some cutting and measuring I tacked them up for a test fit.
All was good so I welded them up quick. The welds are not perfect here, but they are strong and I plan to wrap these pipes.
I want to run straight pipes back to the space between frame and swing arm, and then have them turn 45 degrees out from under the bike. If I need to have mufflers I'm thinking 2 shorty's tucked up under the bike.
The fins look awesome! I started grinding mine down flat after building my engine...I ended up saying F that. its alot of work.

I haven't posted an update in a while, mostly due to being busy with other projects. But I have been slowly working away on the ole cj. Most recent is the install of my rearsets. Most builders simply use the passenger peg mounts, but I have to make everything difficult. So I went and made a few tabs and welded them up to the frame in a comfortable position. The shif side went on nice and smooth. The brake side was another story. I planned on using the stock brake pedal spline to make the pivot for the brake linkage, but I neglected to think about clearance between the new shifter and the stock brake spline. So in order to keep the foot position where I like, I had. To do some modifications. I cut off the spacer that was welded to the frame, then cut and re welded the spline shorter, then I cut up the brake pedal for the female spline fitting... In the end it all turned out alright.
Good eye! I would get confused too. The shifter was just set up like that temporarily. I had to make a bend in the linkage to get around the swing arm bolt, it's all done now and shifts correctly. As far as the exhaust I'm planing on titanium wrapping the header pipes and then ordering up some shorty mufflers from DCC to tuck under the bike. Then I'll make up a some curved exhaust tips to exit from under the bike just under the rear of the foot pegs.
sounds like you may have a winner. I am excited to see it. I would like to do rearsets. but seems wherever you look another obstacle shows up. besides I really like having my center stand intact. maybe Ill loose that and free up a bunch of options.

Thanks. If I had mounted the rearsets to the passenger peg mounts it would have been an easy install. But I felt that put the rider in an awkward position. In the end it also feels good to have made something different work. The bike will be done someday, but now it's kinda on hold due to this build http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=48531 .
Getting some more work in today. One reason I tore the bike down was to smooth the frame a bit. I took a lot of tabs off, and a lot of them left little divots. Especially the passenger peg mounts. There were also some light marks from the flap disc. Originally I didn't really mind it. the marks couldnt been seen from a foot or so away. But I also didn't plan in getting so involved on this build. So a little light weight filler and a lot of sanding.
Now that all the tins are sprayed, I'm considering a color change. Every car or bike I've owned has been black or dark grey. I love the way dark colors look, but I'm considering a change. I've always liked dark royal blue with a little splash of chrome. I'm thinking about blue tins over the black frame and engine with the polished bits I have may look pretty sweet. Opinions?
