super nice. If thats the VHT engine enamel, be very very careful w it. Will chip easy until its properly cured. Also did you treat w metal etcher and then VHT engine primer under it? Also the VHT engine clear works very well. It will keep it slick and glossy wet looking for a long time. The VHT is pretty tough once cured, when its applied properly. I could write the book on it.
also, when I say metal etcher...Im not talking about etching primer, but the stand alone etcher. you spray it on and keep it wet. It will start to bubble up as its etching. then rinse it off thoroughly w water. before primer goes on. I havent really spent any time looking for a high heat metal etching primer. but it may be out there somewhere.

I didn't use etcher or primer because there was a previous coat of engine paint on it. So it got a good degreasing, full scuff with 220 grit, and then a final degreasing. I was hoping the old cured paint would make a good base. I really only need it to last until next winter. I plan on doing a full engine rebuild and having everything media blast exams probably coated. Thank you though for the tips, I'm sure it will come in handy in the future.

Re: '77 CJ 360t - Take Two: It Runs!

Looking goooooood :) Did you check the backwheel clearance with the hoop? You can easily do that by measuring the max amount the shocks can collapse. That number should approximatly be between tire and hoop. You're in for some scary rides if the wheel hits the hoop...

Yep should be all good. If the shocks collapsed 100% there is about 3/8" clearance. I have been toying with the idea of using a slightly longer shock (1" maybe) or some spacers to give the bike just little lift in the rear which would give it some more room as well. In this pick you can kind of see that it would come close, but not quite hit.

Installed a tapered steering bearing kit and got the front end together.

Re: '77 CJ 360t - Take Two: Almost There

Made some gaskets for the left side cover and alternator. All electrical is laid in place, and tested with good spark. A few other odds and ends were buttoned up. Its almost there.

Re: '77 CJ 360t - Almost There!

I made some more progress today, and even started it up quick. It shouldn't be much longer now!

'77 CJ 360t - Almost There!

It's been a while, but its just about there. A solid hour of work will have it on the road. I ended up having to strip the tank, and then I liked the look of the bare beat up metal. So I just cleared it for now. I welded up the mufflers, and have some titanium wrap for the pipes. After that just a few little odds and ends.

'77 CJ 360t - Almost There!

I finally got to take the bike out for a spin! It's needs a little carb tuning, but otherwise ran great.

Tomorrow's task is to clean up the garage!

Installed the speedo. Next is to wrap the exhaust and change the dry-rotted rear tire.

I had a chance to install a new rear tire, horn, make a few rear brake modifications, and make a quick license plate mount. I ordered some 120 main jets from my local shop, the bike seems to be leaning out around 3/4-full throttle. Hopefully the jets will be here tomorrow.
