79 cb750 basketcase

Well into the engine tear down and im stuck with seperating the cases. Its loose and i can lift all around but it seems to be stuck near the rotor. I should add the rotors still on, does it need to come off in order to seperate the cases? I also found what look to be a substantial crack running from the oil strainer towards the clutch basket. Until i get the lower case off i dont really know what it is! Any hints?

also took off the tank badge holders and managed to pop two of the rivets? out, so now have two small holes there so am thinking either jb weld or put two more rivets back in to the holes and bog over them? suggestions?
ps have heard that you can use the rear axle as a rotor remover, thoughts?

I would weld that up, I wouldn't seal a tank hole with jb weld ever.

ok, used the rear axle and it popped off easy as!! yep think i'll just get them welded.
The "cracks" in the cases were not noticable on the inside and i cant see how or what would have cracked them so i think they are just scratches or casting marks. I have to wait a couple of weeks to get all the motors and cases soda blasted as the operators on holiday so will look at getting the frames sorted. I basically have two rolling frames so am thinking different colors for how the mood takes me:) We'll see anyway!

Can you post a pic? It would be a shame to take the effort and pay for the media blasting if it is cracked.
Might just be a casting mark, but they are usually proud, not recessed.

Heres the "cracks" , you cant see anything from inside,

You can however feel a ridge there.

Looks like the oil feed for the primary drive chain

I'm not sure if I'd be worried about those cracks, if you cant see any of them on the other side I would be tempted to rebuild it. Others may well disagree with me. Looks like is may have been dropped on that side, are there any witness marks on the outer casing?

I really respect notlob's knowledge but that crack scares the hell outta me.
Doesn't look like casting flash or a flow line, looks friggin broke from here.

Oh I agree it is cracked but he says not all the way through and theres quits a few bolts holding it together there, mind you I would like to see the otherside.
I would be most worried by the one in the 2nd picture, especially if it can be seen anywhere near the clutch shaft bearing on the otherside.

hey, jusy saw this build thread, page 2
http://www.dotheton.com/forum/index.php?topic=46925.15
and in his pics of the sump area it has almost the exact same "cracks" check it out and see what you think

cheers!! I just seperated the cases on my spare lower motor and it does not have these marks at all? im just wondering if this is a result of over tightening? Interesting that your motor has the exact same marks. At this stage im going to clean up by soda everything i have and then decide what to use. I'll throw up a pic later of the other lower case. I think i'll have enough parts to build two motors but will wait and see!!

Heres the other lower case
As you can see no marks?

those aren't cracks, they're normal for aluminum casting in thin section molds... I'd be really worried about the rusty cams though

Holy shit... REALLY? From this pic I'd have said "Cracked without a doubt".

Cheers RCC, had me convinced too HD. Yeah am worried about the cams but I hope they'll polish up with steel wool. Have ordered a full gasket set today which has set me back a cool $200 NZ, been quoted $120 for the soda blasting which he cant even look at until late next week. I should add that the weather has been crap so I haven't really been able to get into the frame yet.

mold's damaged, why would there be flash coming above the surface of the aluminum? as far as I know, a crack is level with the surface

the cams may shine up with steel wool but if you don't have an actual flat bearing surface, they're going to act like sandpaper on your shims, if the rust has pitted the surface, you really need to look at getting another set
