'81 CB750C "Rock-It" (X-Basket Case)

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Started working on the seat. Set the tank in place and whittled out several shapes of the styrofoam.

Used wood glue and attached them all together to match the frame. I will be using the factory front seat mount slot and the rear fender mounting holes for the rear.

After the pics I cut two more pieces that are horseshoe shaped to transition from the back of the tank to the seat pan. Once the glued seams cure, I'll be sanding it to shape then more updates.

Looks good. What are you using to keep the styrofoam from melting with the fibreglass?
I use an old trick from my R/C modeling days. Mix up some 15 minute, two part epoxy then thin it with rubbing alcohol to make a "Paint" and put it on with a cheap brush. 3-4 coats of that not only seals it but gives it a good hard "crust". Then I tape tin foil over the whole thing as an extra precaution.

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

So you're doing a super thin seat like the reference pic you posted? Nice clean look.

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Thanks Dale, Bare in mind this is just the pan, the foam will add some height, but yeah. For an idea, take a look at the Zook, OVERKILL's seat I built ther same way.

...or the Goldwing BOMBER's seat

Here is tonights progress. Nice and hour-glass shaped, just how I like my Women

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

OK tank has gotten it's last coat of primer-sealer. I'm hoping to sand it and the frame then color coat them soon. MONDAY HOLIDAY HERE!!!
Stand by plan is lay fiberglass on the seat buck in case it's too humid.

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Thanks pal, let's see how it looks with foam and a cover... best part of that is I already have those materials.
Also got the OEM gasket set"A" in the mail Friday night, picked up some fresh lapping compound, and Duplicolors 1650 engine paint. So between the frame / tank painting, seat construction, and engine reassembly, I really have enough to keep me busy for a while and get the bike funds back up... then brakes, battery, chain, tires, etc.
Plus I screwed with the motivational pic of "Anvil" a lil bit ... if you squint and cross your eyes, you can almost see what I got planned.

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Apparently old Massey-Ferguson tractors were a pretty shade of red... That is the color I picked out and today was able to shoot the tank, frame, and assorted bits. (finally!)

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Sweet colour, I have always liked the Massey-Ferguson red (was plenty of them around in my part of NZ) and Kawasaki green ;D .
Maybe you can call your bike "MFR" instead of "basket case" lol.....
Really looking forward to seeing her come back together, cheers Andy......

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Holy red! Looks really clean, keep showing off great work like this and I'll have to convince you to shoot my tins whenver I finally get them ready!

It looks like you plan on putting the badges back on. Are you going to order some new ones?

Gonna do any pinstripes or race stripes?

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

Thanks guys! Badges are going back on after a little tweeking ;)
Silky, the hardest part of a paint job is the prep after that it's a piece of cake.

Re: '81 CB750C Basket Case

You can never go wrong with red. Looking forward to seeing it back together.
