'81 CB750C "Rock-It" (X-Basket Case)

But last weekend at the bike show that Sean and I was at, I hooked up with an old mate who has access to a water-jet and he has offered to use my bike as a ginney pig to take measurements for DOHC 750's to add to his line of fork braces. Was keeping that under my hat in case it doesn't pan out.... I always have the original front fender that is in great shape as an alternative... or a standby.

Cat's out of the bag now Scott! That would be so cool to have a prototype fork brace on Rock-It. Can't wait to see it running.

Hey Hoosier,
That is one of the first things I did was sit on the stock bike and try to put my feet on the rear passenger pegs.
It was then I knew that location was going to be a problem.
That is why I went to a local welder and we came of with the pieces we welded to the frame and blended in to those stock pieces.
The stock pieces are hollow and very flimsy so we couldn't just weld to those because I told him I wanted to be able to stand on them if I had to.

You can see what we did and we cut out the holes to save some weight.
But the bottom four holes will give me four different locations to try and see where I want my rearsets.

Looking good so keep going.
I plan on doing a post very soon with what I have in pictures soon on my build.

seviston: I know right... especially if I can help design it! The one he showed me on his cell phone that was for smaller CB's looked very similar to this...
24-9984a.jpg

Kind of plain looking... two straight pieces with half rounds cut into each that then bolt together... but if the dimensions are spot on I could work with it from there on the endmill here at work and carve out the center a little, or contour the outter edges something like these...

cklamer: That is so stinking COOL! Great idea, back when I started this build I really didn't expect to go full-on Cafe on it, was thinking more of a "street-drag queen". But things just evolved from there. Your idea has plenty of otions I'm sure you'll be comfortable.

Hey Hoosier and any of you Northern Indiana DTT ers in or around Ft. Wayne.

If you like Cars and Bikes check out Fort Wayne Cars Coffee & Bikes. Meet this weekend SAT 29 10AM-Noon off Dupont Rd in Trolly Bar's parking Lot. Let me know if you think you might come out. Follow us on Facebook. Its free and low key, we usually get 50-80 cars of all varieties from Ferrari & Lambo's to vintage. We are trying to get more and more vintage and custom bikes however, all bikes are welcome. During the summer I always ride one of my bikes.

If you like us on Facebook and might come out leave us a note on our page. I would like to meet some of you guys in the area.
Scott I hope you can make it.

Not much picture worthy this week, spending most of my time sorting all the electrical bits that are left, cleaning all of their connections, and fabbing a tail lamp mount. I did blast and paint the battery box before mounting it.

Made up some ignition wires last night. The bike came with a set of Dyna Coils that after some meter readings determined were good, problem was the wires. Measured infinate resistance and when I pulled them apart I found why...
When the PO made this set he obviously didn't understand what is the conductor. He crimped the fiberglass strain relief in the terminal instead of the carbon core. Plus he had the coil side terminals on backwards so the tabs barley went in enough to make contact

A trip to the local Auto Parts store yielded a single Accel 8mm replacement wire that was 60" long. I disassembled the FUBAR wires that came with the bike and scavenged the terminal ends. Then cut the single long wire to length and made up a set of 4. With the Dyna coils, 8mm wires and NGK irideum plugs, this ought to light a fire under my ass.
Oh, and they are red to boot!
Here is the final outcome...

Man, it looks like you have got fire! Just add fuel and light it. If you want me to come out and witness it on first start up let me know. Seriously, I am just a short ride away Scott. I will bring the video cam and Nikon DSLR to document it. Looking good as usual. -Sean

Getting close!
finally getting my grubby hands on a new gasket for the oil pump / cover. I had been watching e-bay and searching out vendors websights for lt to find it was not available. When I went to my local dealership, the parts godess ran a trace and found another dealer close by showed one in stock. I called, verified they had it on hand, and ordered it within minutes of walking out of the dealership. Thank you Mr. Carlos Gomez whoever you are for never picking up your special ordered part!
Last night it and my new chain arrive so I spent the evening out in the shop installing them. Odd note... Everything I had read said my 81 CB750C used a 530 X 106 link chain, even the seller on e-bay had it listed for my application. But when I got it fitted it was too long. I had the adjusters all the way back and it was still slack. Moving the adjusters back towards the front, I verified I could cut an entire link out and once that was done I fitted it back together it lines up smack dab perfect with plenty of adjustment either way. Somehow mine is a 530 X 104.
I am constantly going back over things in my mind and going to give it a good check-over front to back, but so far a battery and some oil are the only things left on my needed parts list and I should be ready to fire this Baby up!
Nice to do it this weekend since Mid-Ohio is a bust. But Sean, I believe I will pass on your generous offer... hate to get a failure on film and setting up for an audience would be a sure fire jinx!

Nice Hoosier, Ia m not making it to M-O either so I am hoping for my thermo switch to get to at least work on the CX. Vid of the fire up is of course a good idea too.

Nice one 'H' ;) can't wait for ya post for how she went 8) stoked for ya mate, :p as for the chain i have the same prob with mine gotta chop a link out  we're so close mate gonna be thinkin bout next project agh ! :-\

There will be a video once it happens all.

Oh and Yorkie... I already know what my next one is! It's been trying to nudge the CB off the lift since I brought it home.

How you've kept the polishing wheel away from it I'll never know. :)

SHE IS A RUNNER!
Just came in from firing her up the first time. Actually went realativley well. Had it on the test bottle for fuel and the took the battery out of the Zook fresh off the overnight trickle charge. Pulled the choke and hit the starter button...
She fired right up, Exhaust is quiter than I expected, waited a minute and started pushing in the choke... Raise the idle speed screw... feel the pipes... All 4 warm!
Let her idle there a bit, cracked the throttle a tad and she responded. Pushed in the choke in half... adjusted the idle.... rumble, rumble rumble.... check all 4 pipes again, getting real warm evenly...
Pushed the choke all the way in... smooth!!!
Twist the throttle slightly a couple times....Rowl...Rowl... ;D ;D ;D
By now the exhaust was starting to get warm enough I was worried about its paint first warm up session and shut her down to let it cool and cure.
Then carb #1 started dribbling little in spurts out the drain :( , checked the bowl drain screw and it was tight. I threw a rag under it and shut off the fuel bottle. Tapping it with a screwdriver handle wouldn't stop it.
DAMN, gotta pull the bowl back off and recheck the float / needle / seat.
Good news is SHE RUNS, smoothly, and sounds GOOD, hitting all 4, and the carb that is pissing is one of the outboard units, easy to get to. All-in-all I am sporting wood!!! 8)

Hell yeah! Sounds like the perfect restart! If your carb was like mine, I had a hairline crack in my overflow tube that was only visible after polishing which caused it to piss gas.

YEAH ! ;D ;D knew you'd have her runnin first pop :p a few tweaks and she'll have a clean bill of health ;D stoked mate "ya dun it again" cool skills mate inspires us all in DTT land 8) now on to ya Brit project cool runnings mate 8)

Thanks guys! Pulled the needle and sprayed cleaner on it and up into the seat. Reassembled and no more leak. ;D
Once the pipes were cool to the touch I restarted it... was rougher than before... damn!
feeling the exhaust revealed the issue was #4 now. Pulled it's plug wire and had no change. Yep #4.
Verified I have spark to the plug but as I was searching for my 18 mm deep well work called with a machine breakdown. Now another poor sap who answered his phone and I are the only ones at the plant babysitting a fucking machine that decided to mess up my day.
