Cheers,

yeah got a 530 setup ready to go. little bit of alignment and modification to the sprocket carrier on the Triumph hub and I should be good to go.......

I have a limited choice of fronts at the moment, only found a 15T, so undecided what size to go on the rear. Bit more research when the time comes???

A 15T front sprocket may have some rubbing issues on the case (I could be wrong). I went with a 16T from an XS650 and it still seems a little small in there but it shouldn't rub as long as I keep the chain adjusted. I did a 16/34 to keep it pretty close to factory ratios. I would have went 18/38 but I couldn't find a ~38T rear sprocket that fit my rear hub (you may not have that issue with your hub. 17 and 18T front sprockets exists for the XS650's. You just have to drill them for the retainer bolts and make up a spacer. Ideally find one without holes already drilled in it.

Stock gear ratio was 16/35 = .457. Even though the chain was bigger (630), the ratios are the same.
A 16/34 (what I went with) is ~ .47 so it's a little lower rpms on the highway but not as quick on the bottom end.
For a 15T front you'd need like a 32-34T rear (it looks like your Triumph one is like a 43 tooth) to be in the same ballpark as stock gear ratios with a 15/33 being close to stock. I'd fear chain rubbing though with such small sprockets.
With a 18T front though you can use between a 38-41T rear and be close with a 18/39 being about as close to stock as you can get. You'd also have the least chance of rubbing.

thanks for the info...

I'm going to aim for a bit more low down acceleration as I live in an area with lots of tight twisty roads, plus a lot of speed cameras !!!!

have also had a rethink on the mounting for the rear caliper...........

going to go with a plate anchored around the wheel spindle, so fabricated a bracket ready for mounting it. will be making up a torque arm to secure it to the swing arm.

The countershaft sprocket a 17T for an XS650 will fit, however you'll need to make a spacer to keep it off the case and to get proper chain alignment.

JT has a gear ratio calculator so you can figure out what gearing you want. The stock ratio is 2.18 IIRC.

thanks for the info, I'll check it out.

In the mean time...................

got the rear caliper mounted on its new bracket......... much happier with it. Obligatory "cafe" lightening holes where needed, also found a nice bit of ali to use as torque arm.

Also had some bling arrive in the post from Allens Performance.......Pair of nice VM36 roundsides. Should help with dialing it the mixture as at least with these there's loads of room for tweaking. My supplier has pre jetted them to get them in the ballpark.... Just got to fabricate some intakes. Decided to go with stainless because that's all I got......

Nice solution on the rear brake bracket. The other one would have caused wheel hop when braking.

The manifolds look good but I suspect they will transfer too much heat to the carbs and potentially boil the fuel in bowl.

good point......i've got 2mm gasket and short length of silicon hose to connect the carbs, so will see how it pans out???? if it becomes a problem i'll look into swapping in an insulated spacer for the direct heat soak......

That may very well work. I'm curious to hear how the carbs tune for you. I'm still using using the stock Hitachis.

One of the reasons i went with custom intake, it allows me to get the float bowls perfectly level, and the angle allows for some space down the center line...........there's plenty of room to get my pork sausage fingers in, to fiddle with the idle tickover screw. the pilot air screws will be on the outside when fitted, so hopefully no problems...?

I can't see a problem with heat transfer - your system is virtually the same we came up with for the Vindicator and XV1100 Cr's

After waiting nearly 4 years [ !! ] for the two pairs of Amal Mk2 Concentrics [ 38mm and 40mm ] - I gave up in the end and also went to Allan's for the Mikunus. Nice peeps and very helpful.

I've gone for RH carbs as my arthritic fingers aren't as nimble as yours !

here they are in their new homes, just need to get some narrower jubilees clips to make it look a bit neater, then sort out a cable. plenty of room in there for fingers and screwdrivers.....

due to the poor condition of the original motor, i took the economic decision to look for a complete engine at the end of last year. I managed to find a fairly complete unit that had been standing around in a garage for a few years. it was missing the TR1 generator side casing, starter assembly and generator, but luckily these I had with the original motor that had been left to rot for all those years. The history was a bit unknown, but it looked almost complete and not too abused !!!! The guy had bought it to put into a sidecar moto-x machine.

Swapped the generator side casing off my rusty motor and the starter assembly. The starter motor was not giving it much of an effort so that needed a strip down and clean-up, I've since learned that this is an Achilles heel of theses engines........weak, lazy starters???

When I got the starter turning at a reasonable speed, I still could not get the solenoid to do its thing. Strip down of it revealed the internal contacts were looking a bit worn and pitted..........Quick Google revealed that a new solenoid this side of the pond is over a +£100
A little more research and I found out the unit off a Suzuki jeep might go somewhere near??? At £18 I think it was worth the gamble...........The mounting holes are the wrong centers, but when i had it in my hands i could do something with it. I decided to open out the holes in the casing to try and get it to fit, eventually realizing the mounting studs were going to be too short........

During this part I stumbled onto the fact that the replacement solenoid studs were screwed in very tightly and looked like they were welded in like the original. Soon got those out and carefully re-drill the casing (not going too deep into the internals) and fitted two new longer studs.

When they were in, the solenoid popped right in there and worked perfectly, pulls the starter mech in nice and firmly......sweet !!!

when I stripped my original motor down to get the generator out, I'm glad i didn't throw any cash at it judging by the condition of the gravy coming out of it !!!
The cost of Yam parts over here is ridiculous.......

next it was on to the headlight..............

have been tossing a few ideas around about mounting brackets, not really liking anything off the shelf I've spotted, or not being willing to part with big bucks for stuff i did like. The I came across these pipe clamps. Quite cheap and fitted the upper part of the R1 forks nicely. They are pipe hanger brackets used in Dairy's, just chop off the welded on pipe boss and there we have a polished stainless bracket ready made.

Got 4 of them chopped , then set about making some brackets for the headlight. Cut and drilled some 3mm stainless plate then folded them in my home made sheet bender. Mounted that up, but still undecided whether to have it in the upper or lower position.........????

Thanx for the tip re: the Suzuki solenoid - do you have a model / part # ??

yeah no worries Beachcomber, see here:

there's' a list of denso part numbers. the company also have a website: http://www.cps-service.co.uk

by the way, looks like I've tracked down the original Reg on the frame???? Have sent it to the DVLA with the V62................fingers crossed I'll get the V5 ???

Those are sweet. Mind sharing where you got the clamps?
