'81XS650 used to be a chop. ♡♥♡♥♡

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

Probably use it to keep a shelf from floating off

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

Final mock up. Hardtail gets welded up today, along with a few other things hopefully.

Yep, that looks pretty rad. Brad welding it up for you today?

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

That's the plan, though I hope to do most of it. With his help.

Awsome Mike, I really need to learn to weld to, I just looked at Brads Scratch built frame for the TT and it is damn nice. You to are going to have a couple of kick ass chops for sure. Makes me want one too, I'll hook up a hitch like Troy and tow it behind the GL when I cone visit ;D

What's the blue bike in the last pic?

That would be an SV650 that I passed when I had my CL175. Seriously, slowest bike ever. Suzuki should be ashamed of themselves......

Haha, ok, really: I basked in the glory or the XS's hard tail frame tonight. Good work as always fellas.

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

Yup. My brother in laws SV with GSXR rear shock swap and an R1 front end. Fun bike...

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

So, I've got the same hard tail to install on my 650 frame. I want to get the frame done before winter. How confident are you that the motor mounts are going to be okay having cut the frame with the motor out?

My motor is already out (was out when I got the bike). I thought about installing the motor and cutting the frame and tacking the hard tail on along with brake stay rear fender and chain tensioner mounts and then taking it back out and taking the frame and having someone do a proper TIG weld job on the joints. But man I'd really only like to have to wrestle the engine once... it's not an easy one man job for sure friggin' thing is heavy.

The mounts will be ok. Measure twenty times, cut once and all that. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with man.

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

This looks all kinds of cool. I bet that frame let out a sigh of relief and said " I'm glad that someone finally cut that ugly ass end off of me".

Re: '81 XS650 short chop - "Schizophrenic"

Haha, that's possible Clem. I couldn't hear it over the sound of my grinder.

So, the frame is close to ready. One more good run at it and I'll be able to mount up the rear caliper and finalize any welding. Then onto paint. Buuuuuuut...... Before I get that far, I need to decide what the hell to do about my rear disk brake.

The hardtail set-up removes the pedal mounts. Because its a disk, it's a little tougher than just welding up a pivot and building a linkage to connect it all.

I MIGHT be snagging a set of Sportster mid mounts which may solve this. If not I have the Monstercraftsman mid mounts (just the plates) I can use. Maybe I'll make some pegs with a brake pedal built in. I have no idea at this point (insert ideas here smart people ;) ).

Pics tomorrow, or whatever. ???
