82 CB900F... The Devil Is In The Details

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

Agreed, they are just so damn expensive and I haven't been able to find any cheap ons on ebay that fit 39mm. I'll keep searching...
In the mean time, I've done alot of work...I got the seat mounted. I put on the brake lights. I found these cool handlebar end lights that I plugged into the tail section to cap off the frame where it was chopped. In order for them to fit, I wrapped them in hammered leather and wired them up to my turn signals. I finished painting the fender and headlight and chopped up the headlight mount from my other 900 to lower the headlight. I'm going to have to do some touch up to the headlight case cause I scratched it fiddling with the mount. The mount still needs to be rounded off and drilled. I also put on a plate holder that I got from Carpy at www.cb750cafe.com. I got the left rear shock off and spruced it up with a fine wire drill bit and lots of clear. Finally, I wrapped the pipes, which was suprisingly easy. Whew...Let me know what you think.

that looks good man! really nice! like the seat and fender, new lights look great

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

man with this set up, a brat style seat wouldbe perfect! then keep that same fender just kick it back a bit, would look trick on this bike, clip ons and then your done! in my opinion that seat looks so out of place, looks like it was an afterthought, please do not take this the wrong way i always hope people are honest with me when i am building. if that seat stays the bike needs to go much lower and/or frame mods. right now it does not fit the look of the bike or the tank

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

I might be able to get the seat a little lower... or raise the tank up a little... would that help?

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

I finished the grind on the headlight mount. I used the Mark 1 eyeball to do the curves. I still have to smooth and paint, and fill in the old holes and drill the new holes.

;) LOL, just bought those... they are enroute. ;D

I almost hate to say this, seeing as you've just bought some bars, but do you realise the euro/aussie version of the F models had clip-on bars? A common conversion for the US bikes is to fit the "sport" controls the rest of the world got-bars and rearsets.

Sorry. But it may be useful info for your 'spencer replica' silver bike ;)

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

No worries. I was aware, but it seems they are hard to find. I did find a pair and you are right they will be useful for the other project. Thank you for watching my back.
Do the ton,

Thanks for the honesty, what's a brat style seat?

Long, flat, ribbed rectangular seat. I handmade mine out of a street sign and vinyl/foam from a '67 Riviera:

I gotta say though, your bike looks like a cafe with a solo seat. Not sure how it's a bobber. ??? I'd ditch those gigantor CBF rear sets and pass pegs, too; it'll really clean up that back end.

Well said and I couldn't agree more. Maybe sort of like the seat that came on it only refined. then made to fit between the fender and tank better.
I think one other thing you could do to really change the looks would be to go with shorter shocks. Slam that ass down would look killer.

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

Hello everyone, just got back from Christmas leave. I hope everyone is having a hapy new year so far. I'm really stoked to get back to work on the bike.
Thanks guys for the feedback. I'm a little disapointed that the solo seat isn't getting more love. I got the nose of the seat lowered by making a bracket that mounts under the tank mount, as compared to the original mount wich was above the tank mount. So take a look at that and see if it doesn't improve the profile.
I'm going to spend some time working on lowering the handlebars more and will revisit the seat once I clean up the front end.
Troybilt: Can I cut the springs to lower the backend and how much do you think it needs to be lowered? Would I also have to lower the front?
Kev Nemo: What if Ijust painted the rearsets black?

Thanks for the honest feedback guys, plz,plz keep it up!

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

Hey brother, Thank you so much for being receptive. I consider it an honor and a privilege to give my opinion on someone's build. Glad you have an open ear. Doesn't mean you have to listen ;D. I read this on another board but I think it pretty much sums it up, "Ol' boy walked up to the fugly truck on day at a show. Said That'll be nice when your finished. I said It is finished. What in the hell do you call it? Mine. but for the right price we can call it yours and you can finish it how the fuck ever you want!
Same goes for scooters. Brats, bobbers, choppers, trackers, whatever. Mine is Mine! I built it for me!"
I think this guy hit the nail on the head.

With that out the way, I think some springs you can cut (maybe??) and some you can't. I tried to cut the ones on my '75 360 and it was a fail. Just taking 1" out made the springs too short to keep the springs retainers tight. Beyond that I have no experience. Could measure yours and try to pick up something shorter if you decide to go that route. I don't know the exact direction you want to go so it is kind of hard to offer advice. I most certainly don't want to try to change the direction you desire to go. At this point you could head down about any road ie: Cafe or brat ,but I assume its in a bobber/brat direction.

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

Looking at it again I think maybe the seat rails being flat and the tank is what throws it off for me. That is probably what JRK was seeing too?? Square peg in a round hole sort of thing. Still looks like it is calling for the brat seat. I don't know. Maybe we need more pics? Just my .02 so take it for what its worth. In the end do what makes you happy.

Something like this: (hope you don't mind that I stole this from your thread Mike)

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

I don't mind that solo seat but I think why the love isn't there, IMO, is that you have a really nice curvy seat that is perched on top of a boxy section of the frame. It's perching is only enhanced by the fender poking out of the back.

I kinda feel that a solo seat flow with the bike as well as be a focal point.

I think if the fender was more of a tire hugger, connected to the swingarm that would be a start. then maybe a roundish hoop at the back of the frame to draw the eye around the seat. Close to the back of the seat, almost looks like it would hold you but in place in case you slipped off under all that awesome power.

Re: 82 CB900F... Yeah a bobber build

You could paint them, but I think you'd be happier with the non-F model standard mids- "bob" and "chop" all the unnecessary bits like that. As for shocks, I'm pretty sure some standard shocks off a Rebel will drop it-you can find them on ebay.
