82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Carb tuning & exhaust fly by!

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!!

Not much to report again this week. With over a week on vacation and work. Plus some travel for work in the coming weeks April looks like non-productive week.

Did manage to do a spring cleaning to the garage and pushed the ol'girl outside in the sun for the first time in awhile.

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!!

I see that you stated you were going to put a rear loop in the back sub frame. What's the plans after that. Are you putting a cafe seat? Or are you just cleaning the back end up? As always its looking great!

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!!

First thought' were to hoop it. But decided against it. I will be making a simple metal pan for the seat the shape of the current frame. I do believe it will work out and look nice.

Something different and thinking outside the box.

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!!

Threw on some paint on some tid bits. Frame is next after some prep.

Dark semi almost flat metallic bronze

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Electronics Tray, Battery Box started

Started the build of my electronics tray underneath the seat and the battery box. All will be cut out of aluminum and tig welded. Tray and box will be removable in one unit.

Was going to do a box style for the tray. But of course the frame is an odd shape and I was having a hard time making my cardboard template to fit and line up the way I wanted.

So I am going to do the tray piece by piece and have it tig'd.

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!! Battery Box, Electronics tray started, paint Pg.9

Not much to report. Not having a lot of time for fab work really sucks. I still need to cut out the metal for my box and tray then have it tig welded together. Will be out of aluminum and will have a brushed look to it.

After that it's finish painting the frame, run my new harness + wiring, new seat pan/upholstery and final assembly. Doesn't seem like much left.

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress!!! Battery Box, Electronics tray started, paint Pg.9

Battery box aluminum cut out. Little trimming up to make everything square and off it goes to be tig welded. Then the tray

Cleaned up the hub sprocket. Used degresor, wire brush and lots of elbow grease. Started to sand the texture out of the aluminum. Thought about polishing it. But with the color combo decided it needed to be black like the rims. So smoothed it out, sand, prep and ready for a few coats of etching primer. Then several coats of the the DupliColor Wheel Paint.

Wheels after deep clean and paint prep. Really didn't want to break them down again. Took my time on masking them up.

Re: 82' KZ440 Build: Progress. Rims painted, Battery box Pg.6

You did a good job prepping the wheels. That's by far the most critical thing you can do before you paint. You made it look powder coated. Good job.

Thank you. Didn't take any shots during prep but my process was.

-Rinse with soap
-Degrease with Super Clean
-Scrub with a small wire bristle brush to agitate all the debri and dirt
-More degreaser and wiper clean
-Rinse
-3M prep cleaning solution
-Etching Primer. 1 dust coat then 1 medium heavy
-Then the DupliColor Wheel paint 3 heavy coats
-Wheel clear coat. 3 heavy coats

Should be nice and durable and last.

I should have a roller this weekend.

I plan not to leave the garage all weekend

Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: More paint, polished bits..taking forever....

Well, that didn't happen. But I did get to work on it for a bit on Sunday.

All the little details count.

Paint prep on parts, cleaning again. Good thing is when it does go together all the small bits will be done.

Caliper before: I didn't take any shots of it painted and cleaned up yet

Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: More paint, polished bits..taking forever....

Might be an odd question but what are you using to polish your parts?

Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: More paint, polished bits..taking forever....

Multiple methods of sand paper wet and dry. Then finished off with a sanding block sponge.

Polish with variable speed dremel and mothers aluminum polish. Its what I have laying around. Seems to work fine. I may pick up some real compounds in stages.

Tank going to the body shop to get redone. Same color with massive metallic flake and new red and gold pin striping.

Almost got a roller.

Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Frame done, almost got a roller. Looking sexy!

Really loving the color now clear coated and the green tank.

Engine almost ready to go in. Need to finish the front wheel, install it. Run wiring, and a shit ton more. Getting close!

Just after frame clear coated

Re: 82' KZ440 Brat'Cafe'?: Engine in, got a roller, seat next. picture overload

Prior to engine install. I went ahead and tapped micro fiber rags allllllll over the place. Ended up with one scratch somehow.
