82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Carb tuning & exhaust fly by!

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

Congrats man, a nice build and lots of good info in this thread

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

Edit: Added youtube video

Thanks, really feels good to be done.

Put several miles on her last night and did a few pulls down the road. Still running pig rich though. Going to confirm float level and adjust if needed, so hopefully that will resolve that.

Odd that they would be off being that I had everything adjusted and it ran properly before the build with the current jet setup.

Just out of curiosity, how did you preserve the fuel system components (carbs and tank) during your build? Completely drain carbs and completely fill tank? If not, today's crappy gas can create deposits in a week or so and an empty tank can start flash rusting which can introduce rust particles.

Tank was cleaned with POR type fuel tank cleaner and left to dry. Tank is in mint condition inside so I didn't feel the need to go any further. Which I guess may or may not caused in issue. Carbs were treated in similar fashion by thoroughly cleaned with degreaser, carb cleaner and set aside.

I'll just go ahead and pull the tank and carbs and do a fresh flush and cleaning.

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

Could also be sticking (or slowly sinking) floats as you originally suspected. Sometimes the foam floats break down with age. I think I'd check the fuel level first since it's the easiest.

I just found this thread. A lot of hard yards there mate. Bike is looking great now. Helping me a lot with some ideas too.

Thank you, just trying to work with what I got.

Now I am moving on from the carbs. I'm certain my issue is not carb related. I had them tuned before the build and it ran pretty much perfect for me with plenty of power and just a stitch rich but not bad.

Now, it acts like there is ZERO power, bogs down on any amount of throttle and drops the right cylinder. Fuel level is correct, nothing blocking the jets, diaphragms good etc...time to move on.

What I have checked

-Coils have plenty of power and do not drop voltage

What I need to

-Compression
-Timing
-Valve clearances
-Sync carbs again

Check your timing advancer while your at it, there's plenty of threads about them giving people nightmares on KZrider. I just got mine functioning properly and it made my bike a completely different animal.

Another thing worth looking at is the spark plugs, caps and wires.

Ya, I'll check that as well. I'm going to buy inline spark testers to see how strong my spark is. For a few gear changes it came to life then fell on it's face again. It has to be ignition/spark related.

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

Coil bad. Secondary windings have zero ohms, primary has 2.8

Time to upgrade to a better coil. Plus not a bad time for new NGK plugs and wires.

Suck you have to keep sinking money in but basically everything is gonna be new

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

If you don't want to spend the coin on new a high-perf coil, you can get a new H-D takeoff coil where someone just had to have a Screaming Eagle version. Probably the same amount of difficulty installing as an aftermarket. Should work just fine with the TCI ignition.

I like this way of thinking

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

Looking at using a Dyna Coil 3 ohm unit. Z1 has them for $67

i got the one in between 2.3 grey coil for my 440, since manual calls for 1.8 to 2.8 ohm.

Went ahead and ordered the 3 ohm Dyna. The manual/pdf I have is a range from 3.2 to 4.8.

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build complete

The coil for the KZ440 with points ignition should have a primary resistance of 3.2-4.8 ohms (most other points ignition coils are around 5 ohms); the coil for the transistor-controlled ignition (TCI) should have a primary resistance of 1.8-2.8 ohms. Most other ignition systems using TCI (not capacitive-discharge ignition (CDI)) use a similar primary resistance coil. CDI systems (used on a lot of trail bikes and some other single-cylinder bikes where you can run without a battery) typically use an even lower primary resistance coil. A 3 ohm Dyna/Accel/H-D coil (with dual output) may work OK on a KZ440 TCI; may be too much current (lower the resistance, higher the current) for a points system.
