82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Carb tuning & exhaust fly by!

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Now it's done, for now

Looks great man. Glad you've got it out and running with most of the summer left.

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Now it's done, for now

Just read this whole thing start to finish as I might be picking up a 440 soon - your bike is absolutely beautiful. I cant believe a read about a years worth of posts in 20 minutes. Do you think the pods were worth all the effort you had to put into them? If I get the said 440 I would like to do pods but would most likely do them after the bike is running well to deal with them last.

Also is it alright to run the 440 with straight pipes - like with no back pressure? I saw you had done that but was wondering if you actually rode the bike with them straight.

Ha, thank you for the compliment. I did the best for what I had to work with as the bike was free and a small budget turned into a new motorcycle pretty much.

I can definitely improve on the carbs with more tuning but it's running fine for me. It will get me by this season and I will upgrade to Mikuni.

I jetted slightly rich for a reason to make up for the pods and open exhaust. Of course you loose a little power with it this way but I plan on getting the 12" Stainless Reverse Megaphone from Cone Engineering. Did you see the YouTube idle video?

Just read from start to finish great job bringing her back to life. You've given me lots of inspiration for my kz305 build. Hopefully you dont mind a little copycat action.

Now you see if I was smart I would have done some thing simple like that for a first build. Instead I've chucked myself in the deep end and now I have a lot of swimming to do! Looking very cool.

Runs good then it seems like it still wants to run on 1 cylinder. There shouldn't be any reason why it's running like it is and I beginning to think it's a head/engine issue. Either I have some valves sticking or worse lost compression.

Going to do a compression check this week and then the head.

Have you got that b#@ch running right yet?

Carbs are synced but won't hurt to check again.

With travel/work I have not had the time to mess with it, maybe this weekend.

how are you going to limit the rear shock travel ? you actually have a dangerous situation as it is

How so? If you are referring to the original poster's bike, I believe he is still running the OEM wheels/shocks. If one of the commentor's bikes, well that's a different matter.

M.B Co - let's see if I'm following: bike runs fine initially but then starts running on 1 cylinder. How long before it starts mis-behaving? Does it seem to be heat related (i.e., works fine when cold; 1 cylinder when hot), or time related (i.e., works fine after sitting for 10-20 minutes (cold or hot), but 1 cylinder after xx time)? You replaced the coil; did you also replace the plug ends and wires? How do the plugs look now (since the mis-behaving)?

To confirm yes, running stock suspension.

Idles just fine and revs well cold and warm.

Doesn't change cold or warm.

Both cylinders are within 10 degrees of each other during the warming process and operating temp.

Coil, plugs, wires all replaced at the same time.

Here is the previous plug chop. One rich, one lean.

right, lean

Last plug chop the day it broke down

Did compression check today.

Cold
Left: 90
Right: 80

I'll out some oil in the cylinders to see how it reacts.
