What's that quote...stalking is the finest form of flattery? I think that's it. :)

Re: 82' KZ440 Cafe' Brat Build: Exhaust done & engine tear down

any news on your engine?
that hone in those cylinders looks very roughh!! looks like it was done with a wire wheel, and i believe they are supposed to be at a 45 degree angle. you can get rings from the dealer 60 bucks a set

did you use the original wiring or did you start from scratch, if possible could you take a picture of the diagram of your control unit for me please would help me a lot

Everything is new. I didn't end up using any original wiring. Made my own new harness from the controls down to the taillight.

I'm assuming your meaning the handle bar controls when your saying control unit?

I'll include a link of my diagram shortly.

yeah sorry, and thank you

Engine is fine, new rings and fresh hone. Added some fresh paint and dialing in the carbs and I'm getting close.

Need more fuel from 1/4 to 1/2.

And good angle of the exhaust.....plenty of room. Only way for it to hit the ground is if it lays over or I crash...lol

Possibly, getting tired of the look of the foam pods. Looks cheap and tacky now that they have been on there awhile. Plus, the improvements of the K&N's over the Uni's.

Left cylinder seems to be too rich. Fouled a plug.

I think I need to take a step back and reevaluate.

I did my best with the stock carbs and gotten farther than most. But I am a bit of an perfectionist so moving on to another setup is the next step.

The more I work on the Harley the more I envy 1 carb. So most likely I will go with a single carb conversion this fall/winter.

Several have tried the 1-carb route; not sure it is easier than getting the OEM to work properly.

When you cleaned your carbs, did you just soak them or did you use ultrasonic? Poor man's ultrasonic - fasten an electric pad sander to a metal tub; place cleaning solution (half-and-half mix of Pinesol and warm water works real well) and carbs in tub; turn on sander and let it agitate for an hour or so.

Can you do me a favor? Your exhaust vid is kind of tricky. It's too loud for your camera mic to pick the sound up properly. Can you take a vid slightly farther away while doing some revs? Maybe even a drive by? I'm hoping you can convince me that these can sound decent. As of now they all sound terrible which is a giant turn off. This literally will make the decision for me as to how far I take my build.

No pressure haha

Thanks

Wow, just read the whole build so far. What a rollercoaster.

I understand about not having any time. I'm married, have a kid on the way, and we just moved in to the City. I basically have no time during the week to work on anything and I might get an hour or two on the weekend if I am lucky. It sucks because all I really want to do is work on stuff and I sit at work all day thinking about it. Bah. One step at a time I guess. If I ever win the lottery I'm just gonna build a huge shop and noodle around on projects all day instead of going to work. :)

Great work so far, I'm not a huge fan of brat bikes but I can take inspiration from anything and I love KZ's of any kind, and I can also recognize and respect hard work when I see it and there is a TON of that in this build. Good luck with it!

Thank you! Glad I can return the favor of inspiration after following and taking idea's from others. Share some photo's when you get there!

I hear ya on the roller coaster. Sounds like the same amount of time I get every weekend. I think to myself what can I do in this time frame and scheduling what to do can be a pain but I made it work.

I felt the same about the brat style bikes but I made it work for what I had and the type of motorcycle. Can't complain since it was free and running condition when I got it. Rode it stock for awhile then slowly transformed it into what it is today. Still needs some tweaking here and there but that is what winter is for.

Really do appreciate the kind words. Keeps me motivated! Hope to start on my dad's 79' Harley this fall/winter so I'll need plenty of it. My wife will hate me as much as she hates motorcycles...lol
