'87 Honda NSR250 'ELF Special'

Thanks Andy. Yeah it's a shame, but now I'm wondering if it's weldable. In theory you should be able to fill the chip with weld, then drill, tap, and machine it. I really don't know much about welding though, so I'm not sure what would happen in regard to cylinder warpage.

Yep, I'll get it welded and see what happens. Can't go wrong as it's basically scrap at the moment.

Cylinder repaired. :)

RC Valves out for de-carbonising. Cylinder ports will also be getting a tidy up.

If you hadn't have broken it in the first place you wouldn't have experienced the happiness you felt when it was fixed!

Head surfaces lapped using light oil and valve grinding compound on a sheet of glass. Thanks A. Graham Bell, the author of 2-stroke Performance Tuning for the tip! Now I just need another barrel.

Rear sets arrived today. Spent the morning installing them and bleeding the rear brake system.

I've been spending a lot of time in Photoshop fiddling around with fairings. I've tried various Tyga models, but they all look a bit too modern, and the nose sticks out too far for my liking.

I think this 1992 RS250 is a beautiful design. It will need some modifying to make it work though. The main problem is it's too short for the taller NSR front end.

Here's the fairing on my bike, with a piece added in the middle to increase the height. The bottom image shows a more substantial modification to bring the front closer to the wheel and give a nicer finish.

Crappy photoshop of the front. The stock light is going to be retained, and a clear cover will be built into the fairing.

I think it's safe to say it will be an improvement on this.

Stoked! I just scored a complete NSR MC18 + spare motor for a very good price. ;D

Stripped the motor. Crank looks to be very good in this one. New seals, and all bearings turn smoothly and silently.

One very good barrel from the motor:

Other good parts I may eventually swap to my bike include:
- Larger 32mm carbs, with air correction circuit (see pic below)
- Better swingarm to fit wider rear tyre.
- Wiring loom with PGM II control unit.
- Less restrictive expansion chambers.

Thank you, it's nice to know others are enjoying this project. Stay posted it should be up and running soon enough.

It's pretty easy and relatively cheap to get cylinders re-plated if you don't need any welding from catastrophic piston/crank damage to them.
You'll probably need to get a dirt bike magazine to find places offering re-plating services.
Usually done for less than $200.00 including shipping

Bear in mind that I am in New Zealand. There's only one place that does it here so far as I can tell. They quoted me $850 for two. Thankfully, I was able to salvage one good barrel from my old motor and one from the spare motor. They look to have a reasonable amount of life left in them.

Then again if re-plating is as cheap as you say, I could always send them stateside to get done. Even with international shipping, there could be big savings.

That's just crazy pricing.
You could probably ship them to California (or wherever) and back much cheaper

I'm very much interested in this plating issue. This is presuming we're all talking about Nikasil. Here in Oz we are not overwhelmed with plating options, and I may need some work done on the RaZoR.
