915 superbike on the cheap

rockcitycafe

I make things.
figured I'd start a build thread since I've been putting a lot of bike pics on the engine build thread, I scrounged the parts for the engine over a couple years, had the idea after looking at some kz440 pistons for a cb350, seemed like making a 915 would be cool too. Bought a cb750 from a guy early this spring, he didn't want much for it, I've already got a rider so I figured this one would be for "playing", it was in pretty good shape but the tires were shot. Looked at buying new tires for it when I happened upon a zzr1200 front end and rear wheel on craigslist for what new tires would cost, so that solved that, once I got the wheels I really got inspired to build a real performance bike. I want to keep the stock geometry as much as possible, so I machined trees instead of trying to cob the zzr trees to the 750, custom swingarm keeps the back end pretty much stock as well.

Built a seat, built revision 1 trees, built a mold and pulled the lightweight seat for use, turned out I miscalculated the offset so I wound up making a second revision of the trees to keep the stock 750 trail

working on tree revision 2, made them with proper offset and step in top clamp to keep stock trail as best as possible, carved a foam blank of the tank shape and started making the metal tank

started working on the swingarm, stock length and everything, just needed to be wider to accommodate the rear wheel

Can't wait to see this one progress - next thing you'll be building your own frame :)

actually thinking about removing the steel rear frame section and replacing with aluminum, gotta figure out the weight saving potential first though :D

Looks sweet man!

How do you form the Alum for the tank over the foam? Or do you have a wooden plug somewhere we cant see in the picture?
