Thank you, the upside of building a bike this slowly is that you have plenty of time to think over every detail. I still have a huge list of things that need to be done ( pipes, carbs, wiring, headlight, rear wheel, rearsets, hydraulic clutch, finish the seat etc.). Juggling between school, two jobs and a 10 month-old daughter (not forgetting the wife) leaves me with very little time to work on the bike. I am still hopeful on getting it on the road for the upcoming season (around May).

A couple of questions for the experts.

1. The mechanic accidentally put the cam on the wrong way, I called him up and said that in the clymers manual the points side is to the right (at least in the diagram). so will this be a problem? (timing is set, the pistons aren't touching the valves or anything).

2. If it's ok to use the cam "backwards". Will my boyer work? I mean obviously the pickup will be turning clockwise, but other than remember that retarding/advance or switched, will there be a problem?

3. I'm converting to a hydraulic clutch, what would be a good material for the new longer rod? ST50K or some other HSS?

that's it for now, plenty more to come.

Gorgeous start here! I love the GS rims, I should go dig up a pair!

No, your engine won't run with the cam in backwards....

If you do, I'll give you a ton of pointers, they will save you time and money. Take it from someone who bought 3 sets of stainless spokes and 1 set of custom made nipples :-X

And, I don't mean to sound like an idiot, but why exactly won't it run? I mean, if the lobes are symmetrical, and the hmm.. once again my english fails me, but I mean, if the rise on the lobe is symmetric, is there some other reason why it wouldn't run? with the boyer elecronic ignition.

You're most likely right, I just need for someone to explain why.

I'll take you up on the wheel advice once I start, thanks!

As for the cam, I'm pretty sure than the lobes are different for the intake vs. the exhaust, as well the profile of the lobe may well be different from one side to the other. I know the cams I just put in my car are brutally steep on the back side of the lobe which isn't a really problem since all it does is snap the valve closed quickly. However if it were running the other direction the valve train would be forced to deal with that terribly steep lobe first and then would close slowly. Niether are a good idea..

I would turn them around just for the peace of mind of knowing they are correct. I would imagine they are not symmetrical. they may look like they are but they probably are not. Then you know they will be right. Keep it up thing looks sweet.

Just as eveyone else has already stated. Lobe centres and ramp rates will be different if installed backwards....valve timing and overlap will be out a whole bunch too, I doubt very much that it would even run like that.

Yeah, I pretty much figured that'd be the case. :-\

So, next question: Does the cam cover come off with the engine still in the frame? ;D

seems like it will I'm no expert on xs's but it looks like the down and dirty stuff is all there.Thats a pretty easy to follow diagram.

no. I've tried. Good thing is the engine is not as hard to get out as a CB750 :)

love this build!
