A few words.

Perfect... Goober-Man-Love... And I'll have you know that there isn't room for three in the "Barber Love-Nest Trailer." I'll have to bring a tent and let you two have your privacy :p

I'll pick one example just to illustrate it - GSalter and that CB750. It's not that the bike wasn't well done because it was really nice but they were using DTT as a promotional tool. That's legit too, but we may want to think about how we want to deal with that.

Yup, know what you mean. I didn't join his fan club when he first showed up here. Incidentally he posted the same stuff on other boards, also with mixed results. One of those guys who only posts to flaunt his wares. Guys who don't otherwise participate in any other discussions but only drop by occasionally to blow their own horns.

but he may be a good snow skier!

Guys, take this thread in itself as an example.

thousands of members... but i only see maybe 20 or 30 posting even weekly. theres always going to be a person here and there who gets something they dont deserve, but the reality of the matter is that 20 years from now, if (god forbid) DTT is not around then, im going to look back and talk about the guys you describe in your original post; yourself included.

hell, even today, when people come to my house and look at my parts, i tell them....

"that wheel came from a guy named kiley; one of the nicest guys ive met"

or...

"if it werent for this old jerk called "crazy pj" I wouldn't be able to have done that on my bike"

I first got into "cafes" when i first got into motorcycles. this was before the trend REALLY hit. right before it, admittedly, but enough before it that i can say i was not a sheep. when i saw the stuff you guys were doing, i was inspired. I saw the same kind of passion in every project that i saw in my own, and that is what made this site great.

so remember... there could be 1,000,000 members, but there is only going to be one kiley, one dr j, one deviant1, one rocan, one pj... you guys get the point.

When i get to see you guys im buying ya all a beer.

beware the babble

Kiley,
You and I have talked a little bit about some of this and you know where I stand. I deal with a bit of depression myself and compound that with a dose of SAD this time of year. Don't let it get to you my brother, we need you here.

As to our burgeoning ranks, here's an analogy that fits....
In my 6th grade science class we were studying microorganisms and use of the microscope. We took a handful of straw and put it in a jar with some purified water.
A few days later we had some interesting little guys cruising around, eating each other...generally having the good time that amoeba will. Then it started getting crowded and newer critters started showing up under the glass and things were really busy. Then it started to stink. Then everything died.

In short, the growth outstripped what could be handled and they pooped themselves out of a home.

I think growth is a good thing if for nothing other than what Rich mentioned, the knowledge pool. We just need to manage the growth in such a manner than it doesn't outstrip what we can handle. Douchebags don't live long here, those posts can be culled. JohnnyComeLately should be closely scrutinized as well. I'm all for new membership, but if you sole purpose is to post pics of your bike to garner the coveted "Intertoob Pat on the Ass"...well, there are lots of joints out there than may be a better place.

BOTM should be reserved for those that both participate AND have a build thread in place. The black Norvin is glorious looking but it's not part of the family. I don't think Twisted did anything wrong or was derelict in any 'duties' as MOD for that list, but just wasn't served with a clear enough set of guidelines.

Kiley and anyone else who's feeling the pinch, please don't give up and go away.
We can continue to benefit and benefit FROM this joint if we do so cogently, as a group.

To be fair, Grant (GSalter) was very clear in his very first post:

Hello everyone;

I am a new member obviously! My best friend and I have started a new business together but still plan to keep the day jobs. We started a company called Cafe Fabrications and our mission is to build bikes and parts for the aftermarket crowd.. Specifically the cafe crowd! I don't have a photobucket account but you can check out the blog on our project. We are getting a little beat up with the caferacer.net site but I will deal with those guys soon. So thanks for having us and tell me what you think of the bike so far. Good or bad we don't really care you can't please all the people all the time.

...and he's posted in a variety of boards since then, not promoting his business at all. His website (the blog referenced in the first post) hasn't been updated since June 2010, but he's been on the board posting just a week or so ago.

Let's not start deciding who and who isn't a 'good' member etc. The magic about a site like this is its content and direction are entirely controlled by the members. So if someone joins on and makes 2-3 posts promoting their business or whathaveyou, it will be a blip on the radar and if nobody chimes in or participates in the conversation, it will very very rapidly disappear into the past.

So if you don't like what someone is saying, the fastest way for it to go away is to ignore it. The more you post in their threads, the longer they'll be up top.

And for BOTM, given it's an ENTIRELY democratic process through the nominations and voting, and fewer than 200 of our members vote each month, I think it's in your control who is nominated and who wins.

Havent been around here much lately, but Its the the guys posting on this thread that keep me coming back.

Thanks tons dudes,

Chaddy

P.S. The 175 build is still progressing. More behind the scenes now cause its taking forever. The help offered to get the bike this far is greatly appreciated. It will be done! 2012!!?

I can relate to what most everyone is saying here. I haven't been around too long. I was more or less absent over the summer due to work, and I will say there was a pretty big difference when I got back into the fray, this winter compared to last. It's much more hectic and I have a hard time keeping up with half the builds going on. But there is still so much more community and brotherhood here than almost any site I've been a member of. I will echo what everyone else said though; haters come and go and always will, but the real community doesn't change. You guys are fackin great and damn real. I owe way too many of you a beer or six, and I fully intend to make good on my debts!

Bulging ranks aside, this is still one of if not THE best most free thinking forums I've ever been one. I come back here to learn and contribute because of many of the people in this thread. While building my bike last year I felt almost an obligation to work hard and see it through completion just to share the final product with all the folks here that gave me great information, inspiration, and kind words of encouragement through out the whole process. Kiley, I too have felt a weirdness lately but I will still be here for my old friends and hopefully for some new ones. Can't wait to meet more of you this summer. I made sure to save plenty of vacation time for various meet ups.

Why does everybody pick on GSalter so bad? What about Dime City and Roc City nobody seems to have a problem with them promoting what they do? I really liked the 750 Salter built as I love everything coming outa Roc and Dime too!!

I definitely didn't start this thread to pick on anyone, new guys especially....Okay maybe to pick on Mike a little bit. Did you all know he doesn't want to run a front brake on the bob?! :p :p :p

I started it because I want it to be made aware that our site is changing. I want people to recognize it and do their part to stop it before it gets to the point that it is too late. I want the community to stay a family.

Thank all of you for the kind words. You guys are indeed the ones who make the world of DTT go 'round. There are still a few more out there that I'm sure will chime in. They are the ones that I don't want to see disappear.

We can make this the place that we all want. We can keep the parts flow going full force without feeling like we're getting taken advantage of. We can continue to be the tight knit group that we really are deep down. For all of you who have felt this place feeling a little weird, in the words of Beatnik..."Let's fix it"!

I think you are all getting the nod from Tim to make this place what you want it. Real conversation like this is the best medicine. It's all up in the air. We can welcome people at the same time that we show them how things are done here. So many of s stayed because of the sterility of other sites. Let's not let this one become sterile.

so i totally agree with mike and supporting the site, but umm...
can it be in a few weeks when i have the extra cash lol
just sayin hehehe

Swag you scare me some times with how perfect your inaligies are (no i can not spell but you get the idea)... MIKE NO FRNT BRAKE???? not even a micro drum? ha ha ha

I'm really picking up what you're putting down on the January BOTM. While it's a cool bike, I didn't vote for it because there was never a true build thread. While I'm a comparatively new member, I really think BOTM should be as much about the build as the bike.

That being said, I feel there is a relatively small group of normal posters that contribute. It kind of sucks because a thread can have hundreds of views and only a couple responses. But, a specific subset of the membership has always been willing to help me out when I've had questions. Several of the posters on this thread have given me advice in 1-800-CAFE-HELP. PJ, Dirtbag and Mysta have given me tuning tips on my 360. Twisted has helped me talk through some of the design struggles I'm going through with my build. All this to say, there is a great group of members here that really make this forum what it is. I'm a young dude that's never worked on a motorcycle in a small quadplex garage with limited tools. Without DTT, I probably could not build 1/4 of what I've done so far. For that, thanks!

I didnt say you are picking on anybody Kanticoy, but the very thing we want to fix or change about our site (is happening in this thread even), hard core members immediately start pointing fingers and other lesser known members. Like the stab at GSalter, he built a great bike and IMHO has been treated like shit from day one.

I find that almost everyone posting consistantly is always offering advice and words of encouragment. i don't think you could find a better group of guys to chat with about bikes. However, I really hate Cafe Racer TV. It makes everything I do feel.....what's the word? Cheap. It just doesn't resemble "our" dedication, obsesion; perhaps sickness is the proper word.
Motorcylists are lovers of nuts and bolts. They have a passion for all things mechanical. Machine, motorcycle - the words interchange freely. That kind of word swapping works with cafe racers. We have cuts on our hands, and dirt under our nails. We have felt the sting of a setback, and the exhileration of hearing a bike turn over again for the first time. We know that carburetors are never clean enough, and the best carburetting system is merely a comprimise.
To my fellow Do The Ton brothern, cheers and fear not. Warm weather will be here again soon and we can all get back to that which we love; cleaning out our pilot jets so we can ride once more.
