A few words.

Since nobody has directly addressed it, I'll try:
Gsalter posted pics of a really neat pro-shop built bike. It's built to a high dollar hotrod level and really have some nifty things done. The problem is it's almost entirely to create traffic so as to make money. Guys like Herm and Jason at Dime City and that goober(whosename escapes me) at RocCity, they "came up" here. They all had a presence before they promoted their business. Simple as that.
I will say that certain guys did jump in with guns blazing for exactly the neato bits that i pointed out on the Gsalter bike. I do think they were a bit unfair and worked a little hard to create some negativity, but that's another subject to be addressed elsewhere.

also... DCC and rock city, hell even my shop offers discounts to any DDT member! I think that is a great advantage. i know that i purchase all my parts for smaller metric builds from DCC and on other forums i sponser (the Harley forums and what not) i purchase from the other sponsering venders as well to keep the site going and the busn that back them

All valid points. The DTT discount offered does go a long way to showing the aforementioned companies loyalty. In the end, this is a free and open place. If guys want to post about their businesses, all good. You dont like it, nobodys making you buy it. Im goin out on a limb here, but I think the original idea behind this thread is based on the seeming lack of comraderie of late. I dont think thats entirely true though. I think the issue is that with the influx of "new" blood, some of us are a bit more cautious of throwing our hat into other peoples rings. I know that the group of members who I have been close with (in a non biblical sense, no matter what Swagger says happened between us in WV) I still am close with. And that group grows every day. Thats all Im concerned with... And ya, NO FRONT BRAKE. If it was good enough for the chopper trash in the 70s its good enough for me. ;)

ya but we didnt try real hard to support and guide GSalter in a direction that would benifit DTT either if I recall, Im just as guilty I didnt bash them but I didnt offer much support either. Sure what they were doin was off the charts, but could you imagine if we had those guys in our corrner with those CNC skills? We could just about have anything made we wanted!

i feel ya. plus we got Swagger in our corner he is an awesome machinist... i can do CNC and have complete access to it, the problem that you run into is $$$$ it is $$ to set up cad and/or to run the programs. I make stuff all the time but it is mainly for the HD Dyna crowd... it is just really tuff to do production runs of cafe parts that are 1, able to be used on many bikes and 2, not costing over an arm and a leg... we have tried several times over the years i have been a member and it never really works.
I love the stuff they came up wiht for that 750 it was unreal! but when he posted i would ask him to stick around and help out and all they would do is post up more pics of the bike never answer questions or help out forum members... to me that is wack ... granted they where also opening up a new company and had alot on their plate, so i have to respect that as well

I got nothin????? ummmmmm haha I JUST WANT US ALL TO BE FRIENDS. Come on group hug everybody ;D

I am more into high 5's and hand shakes :) ha ha ha
man when it warms up we have got to put on some miles bud! you think of going to the gathering? we could ride there together or toss the bikes on my trailer and drive out

hahaha, whats wrong joe? affraid on a lil man love?

hahha "get in deep like boy!" -dodgeball

HIGH SLAP, Man id love to but I need to kick it into high gear and start on the one clunker I kept. I sold off everything that was rideable.

It's not even that there has been a lack of comraderie. It's a simple math equation that points out a problem with those of us here that consider this home. It's that the rapid influx of members is overwhelming those of us that upheld the solidarity of our wonderful land of DTT. There have been enough new people coming in here that it has overwhelmed the ones of us who have kept this place a representation of community. The parts and idea sharing, the love and the ribbing out of love, the true real life companionship that is bred out of all of that...it has waned. This has happened because the standpoint that we used to take, the one that kept this place alive in the light that we wanted it to, has fallen short to the superficial. It kind of feels plastic to me now. This isn't the fault of any one person. Von mentioned that he has tried to keep this place well within the tensile strength of its roots by monitoring what goes on. He has, I have seen it. He can't do it on his own though. It is something that we will all have to remain conscious of. It might not be a bad idea to write and present a credo, or a mission statement, or whatever you want to call it. Then the basics are out in the open. Then it will be up to all of us to uphold that idea and make it stay prominent in the hearts of the members here so that it reverberates within everyone here. There would be no greater accomplishment than to have 3,000 people who act toward one another the way that the 20 or so of you that I borrowed tools from at various GTGs and shared a beer with, and laughed at one another's expense acting together. The possibilities are out there for things like that to happen, we just have to make it so. I watched people take up for their brethren in the face of adversity in west virginia when there was a threat to the peaceable atmosphere that we promote as a whole. That should ring true everywhere here. We should count on one another always, and be rightful in doing so.

I realize that the size here has grown beyond all of our initial expectations, but to me that is a challenge to create something that has possibly never been done before, and that is a large online community that can take faith in one another. As the site changes, so to must we change. It's as simple as that. Otherwise, I fear that a lot of good people will be inclined to keep to themselves, and to me there would be no greater shame. This thing that we all love can only stand to become more amazing when we approach it with a community effort and out-pour. I'm just airing out my laundry here, and I'm sorry to sound like a politician.

I do and always will love DTT the way that DTT was meant to be. That is important for all of us so that we can continue to grow and prosper. This is the time for us to really evaluate things like BOTM and the member introductions. This is the time for us to stand up and make light of a potentially dark situation. I don't want the proverbial bacteria to destroy itself (thanks swagger).

ok here is our creed. LEARN, WRENCH, TEACH. then the guy you just taught will have learned, then wrench and teach, wash rinse repeat, Its the circle of life or something?
All joking aside thats not a bad idea

i dig it... i think some of the guys had come up with a motto to a while back but i dont remember

Ive dreaded this day when I 1st heard of a TV show about cafe racing. We will not let the masses swarm in trample us and swarm out leaving us laying there like a cockroach that was just stepped on with legs a twitchin. We have the ability to be DTT with 20 members or 20,000 members!!!

Why does everybody pick on GSalter so bad? What about Dime City and Roc City nobody seems to have a problem with them promoting what they do? I really liked the 750 Salter built as I love everything coming outa Roc and Dime too!!

I wasn't picking on gsalter. I used him as an example to see if people agree or not about vendors tooting their horns. I figured that someone should raise it and I needed an example. I also mentioned another guy and I'm not tooting his horn either. Just examples to illustrate a point of view.

For the record, I think the bike crated by Mr Salter and his business partner is exceptional in many ways. There are a lot of nicely executed details and obviously a lot of time and work went into it. But there are also lots of styling that I don't happen to like, but that's just my personal taste.

Let's all keep in mind that a personal opinion is not necessarily an attack on anyone, any more than telling someone that his bike is rad or awesome is adding much to the discussion, but we can do both as long as we are polite.

I was brought up to enjoy a good and lively debate and to remember to keep it civil (which I try to do but sometimes miss the mark)

Hmm....I feel like there's more to say with reference to keeping the feeling that's made this a cool place to hang....(NO TOUCHING MIKE!!!!), but aside from a quick joke I think it requires more thought.

We can come up with a fancy mission statement, and I think we should. However that alone won't do it.
We can create an O.G. members lounge only available to certian elite members...but that'd be elitist and crappy.
We can be encouraging to everyone and try to lead by example, which is good but how do you do that with a bazzillion six(and counting)new members? I don't think you can.

Kiley alluded to something that resonated with me in his post above, the superficial plastic feeling that's crept in. I get that bit, with the TV show.....which as much as I'd like to support it....well, it blows. I love the fact that it shined a light on Herm and Jason's efforts but really it's just repackaged moto-fluff. That bugs me. It's driven lots and lots of new blood here and I DO think that's a good thing...mostly. For myself, and you may have noticed it in the Beachcomber's "What's a caferacer" thread......I've kinda leaned away from the labeling of bikes in my own description (and mind). It's a small thing, but personally it allows me to step back out of the hype stream and see with a critical eye exactly what I'm doing and what I want to go with it. I enjoy the same bikes, the same builds and builders but that subtle change in my point of view has allowed me not to be resentful of the water being clouded. And it has, let's be frank. For every new guy that's got his shit together, is willing to help or be helped, there's a heap of others that aren't. There's a lot of negative attitude that's been tossed about in threads recently, most of which seems to be coming from some of the new guys who have probably experienced that in other forums.

I think we need to enforce a set of basic rules:
1) Don't be a douche. It doesn't make you cool, it doesn't inform others...it just makes you a douche.

2)If you feel the need to be critical of someone's work, idea, concept etc, do so in a positive manner where all can benefit, be open to others and give back what's given freely to you. Be willing to support your position.

3) Participate if you wish to reap the benefits. ie: BOTM
Perhaps there needs to be some guidelines set here or a review process, since anyone can crap out a high post content.

These are just the thoughts in my cluttered brain at the moment, but I believe this needs some real consideration.

Should I build a cafe bike or do a rat bob for me next bike...you decide for me...NOW!

I like this thread though, good points here and there and everywhere. We're all gummy bears!

I just want to point out, RocCity gets on here as much as he can and helps out. Gotta figure him and the guys from DCC have to be busy as hell. Especially after all the new members. Heck, both Sean and Jason (along with Swagger, PJ, Teazer, etc) have all helped me out on a 1 on 1 basis.
