Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - Few New Pics

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

Yep thay dont get much easyer to work on. Factory parts are available for a price. One cool thing is parts swap across many years. except with the R65, some what unique for eng. parts. Have ya been to rockerboxer.com ?

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

New or used parts for all BMWs' are available at RePsycle BMW..... prices are good also. If you shop in person he usually has a few bikes in the back waiting to be refurbished and sold. If you bring a wad of cash you can sometimes buy one for a nice price. A really nice beemer can be put together for $2000-2500 if you get a good buy on one that is wrecked or has something wrong with it.

Yeah I've checked a lot of these sites.. 130-190 is still expensive for a gasket kit..... Also, regarding SJ... I ordered a finned exhaust wrench from them, and told them I needed it 2day.. They charged me $30 for 2 Day Air UPS... they shipped it flat rate USPS for around 8 bucks.. AND USPS lost it.... I called and complained... They said there was nothing they could do for me..

Hucky's is by far my favorite and the cheapest site of all of them. Unfortunately they don't carry parts for a R65. Yeah it's $140 for an entire gasket kit for my bike, but I just buy gaskets as I need them.

I bought my bike for a quarter of the money I've put into it. I guess there is a reason they keep a pretty good resale value.

Yeah for some reason, the R65 seems to be the harder bike to source parts for at times... (again.. at a relatively good price)... I needed one complete kit for my rebuild..

I too scored this little guy for almost nothing. I was desperately searching for a bike for ages and then decided I would pursue less aggressively, save some money, and buy something nicer / in better condition.. possibly wait until winter.. THAT SAME DAY, I spotted the Beemer on Craigslist...

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

http://www.bmwhucky.com/ link above isn't right (no s)

I've only ordered parts from Bob's and BMW itself (in the US - in Canada the parts a 2x the price). Will check out Hucky's.

Yeah I saw that R65 on CL for a while. I wanted the front forks and brakes of of it.

Ha. Not worth it. They're in terrible shape. Rebuilding a new one. Currently trying to find lowers without the flectors but disc brake mounts. I think that's impossible. Either way. You can have the old front end. It's garbage.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

Two more great sites bmwr65.org and for used parts this one has for sal ads ibmwr.org

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

Dude... that front wheel looks reallllllly small. :0).

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

So just a quick warning if you are monkeying around with your pistons on your Beemer..... Make sure you put the pistons back on the right way.

Normally I'm very anal about things like this. When i take screws off of something i lay them out in the exact order i took them off. But the piston eluded me. There is a tiny arrow on the piston that is supposed to face forward. I was inspecting them before putting the jugs back together and noticed the arrows were facing backwards. Which royally sucks because those things were a real pain to get off. The circlip that holds the wrist pin in is very difficult to get out. And now I have to do it all with the motor in the frame. FML.....

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

I use a curved pick (Harbor Freight , $2.99 for the set) to pop the clip out of the piston, then a big "C" clamp and a couple of sockets to press out the pin..... or you can put the piston against something which won't move and drive it out with a mallet.... this is while the engine is in the bike. While you have the pin out, why not buy light weight wrist pins and install them. Your bike will rev much quicker and also be smoother. I think San Jose may still have some of these for about $100 or so...... well worth the money. ;) ;) ;) .

+ 1,000 points on that. Took 10 seconds to pop them out. Had everything righted in about 30 mins.

As far as the lightened wrist pins. I had a search for them a while back and couldn't find them for my bike. Reading a little further a great deal of people have been saying don't mess with the R65. It just doesn't do well with performance upgrades. I wouldn't think it would be that big of a deal for the wrist pins. But again. Couldn't find any. Not even San Jose had them. Which, not sure if I would buy them from them anyway after the last time i ordered from them. *shakes fist and mumbles to self*

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

How is the project going....... haven't heard anything in a while :'( :'( :'( .

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

Ha. It has been a slow spell. I can have the bike back together in a weekend. But I'm actually still waiting on the tank. Saw it the other day. The fab looks amazing. I think everyone is going go be quite impressed.

In other news kzpokey and I got hitched last night in Vegas. Weeeee!!!

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65

Ok. Super sorry everybody for dragging this out. I've just had a very busy few months. But I'm back on the job and hope to be rolling here before too long.

Progress Update:
I'm STILL waiting on the tank.
Need to slap the jugs on.
Need to finish connecting some wires.
Need to connect brakes.
Need to run throttle and choke cables.

All up I figure I have about a weekend's worth of work. If that.

Also, 66Replica came by and helped me with my seat, which is much appreciated. Laying fiberglass by yourself suuuuuuucks.

Floral foam madness.

Love my Benchmade.

This was kzpokey's idea. Works beautifully.

Got the form.

I'm laying resin while 66Replica drops the glass.

Please excuse my dirty garage. We just moved and the garage became the U-Haul drop off point for all things. Getting cleaned soon.

Well that's it. Hopefully I'll be pulling the seat tonight and doing some trimming and whatnot. Then this will go to the painter for them to fool with the finishing. Next step: Get the jugs and headers on. Maybe start it? WEEE!! I've been slow about the jugs, because of the piston rings being so hard to compress while sliding them on. I need another person in there. Replica? lol
