Awesome! The color for the powder coat is Bomber Orange Sparkle. The tank (when I get it back) will be Black Sapphire Metallic (BMW color from 2008).

A few updates. Replica came over and helped me get the jugs on. It's a lot easier squeezing those rings in there with an extra set of hands. AND popsicle sticks.

My guy finished the metal work on my tank. Looks amazing. He was supposed to be painting today. But I haven't heard from him so. Who knows.

Smoothing ze seat.

Next I'll get the headers and carbs on. Then run the throttle cables and hook up the wiring. Hopefully I can get that done in the next few days and my tank and seat will be done.

I am changing the color up a bit. Still black. But getting away from the pretty, glassy paint and go back with what I originally wanted. Satin black. Bit he's throwing some gold flake in there to match the flake in the frame. Might be cool..? Lol.

Going to try and mess with some of the wiring when I get back from dinner. Still nothing to report from the painter.......

I finally got the tank and seat back from the painter.

I also fiddled around with some taillight options...

And then there's this thing... I don't really know how I feel about it.. I was excited about it right up until I finished it. It may just be that my mind is on getting this sucker running... so sitting here soldering wires for lights that I don't even need is pffff. Thoughts?

These are from the weekend. Last night I managed to:
- Finish up the wiring (on the front end.. still debating on rear lighting).
- Got all the wiring pulled into the headlight bucket and the headlight back together
- Got the exhaust secured properly.
- Threw on the motor mount spacers (because I'm an idiot and left them off... ALSO... those suckers are a bitch to put (read: hammer) on when there's new powder on a frame)

Need to do:
- Finalize rear lighting
- Run clutch cable
- Seat pad
- Battery bracket (which I'm going to see first if I can use a smaller battery I have laying around.. (actually it came out of kzpokey's CS3.. shhhhh)
- Torque a few bolts (read: all of them)
- Get that rubber boot on the swing arm joint. Yeah I'm making this an individual task because I believe it will take a few hours. That thing is a menace.
- Order my rearsets
- Uhh.... put gas in it? (and various other fluids)
- Ride naked into the sunset yelling "It's my birthday bike! I gotta wear my birthday suit!"

Hopefully I'll get a good chunk of the to-do's sorted this afternoon.

Weeeeeeeeee!!!!!

You're not pulling any wool over my eyes, but I guess I'll let you use it for now :)

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

Simply gorgeous Matty. The dash really doesn't grab me, to tell the truth. That said, the rest of the bike is dead on.

Yeah... Sames.... Kinda meh...

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

So I didn't get a chance to mess with the bike last night, as I was busy helping my elderly neighbor resurrect THIS...

He said it quit running about 5 years ago, and it's sat in his garage ever since. He said he even had a "Yamaha guy" look at it to no avail. I figured it was the carb. Popped the ol 'kuni off and gave it a little cleaning. Slapped it back on and she fired right up. He was amazed I got it running so fast. And then he couldn't believe it when I got it to idle.. Something he said it's never done in 20 years of having it. Told him I'm the Mikuni Master...

True story.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

Hi, looking good.

A possible option for the dash is the Acewell pack. It has speedo, tacho, voltmeter, clock and all the idiot lights you could want.

I mounted the Acewell bracket onto a fabricated mount that bolts into the original handle bar mounts. I can adjust the viewing angle by moving the bracket in the handlebar mounts rather than bending the Acewell supplied bracket.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

I shifted the key down onto a plate that I mounted at the top of where the right side cover would normally go.

With the fold down BMW key it is right out of the way. This location also gave me nice short runs from the battery to the key.

I mounted a Hella fuse block just to the rear of the other electrics under the right hand side of the tank. This also gave nice short runs from the key to the fuses.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

Ditch the dash and the idiot lights. They're called that for a reason ;) I don't have any on my XS and have never missed them.

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

Nice build.

Cut up coffee cans work for the jugs/rings. that and shoes...... ;D ;D ;D

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

The bike is looking much much better than where it started from. Keep it up!

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!

Tons of updates!

Got everything put back together/connected.
I dropped the headlight and that little dash thing and I actually really like the dash now.
I put gas up in that sucker.
I pushed the button and it did this:
The Beemer Lives!!

First try. Win!

Today I actually rode the sucker. It's running a little weird. Like it has very little power. I'll be taking it to Perry's to have the Godhand laid on it. More stuff to come.... A friend from Canada just showed up at my house. (random I know)

Re: Airhead Cafe Racer - 81 BMW R65 - I GOTTS PAINTS!!!
