So I want a small truck to replace my civic, but I don't want to spend big bucks on it or fuel etc. I need it to hual a bike or 2 and get me to work etc. Well I found out the 15 year old JDM KEI trucks are street legal and can be bought in Canada. Then I find out there is a shotload of them being sold in the US to compete with side by side ATV's for off road only use. They are little trucks with 4.5 x 6.5 foot beds, with hi/lo range 4x4 and get 50 MPG and can travel at 60-70 mph ok. They are totally rad, I found a dealer about 4 hours away that even finances them! I need to research a little more but I think I am going to consider one for a cool little commuter and bike hualer etc. The van is really cool, could be a great little camper and with the high roof would take anything smaller than a gold wing I bet. oh yeah and there are lift kits, skid plates, plows etc. for them to do some work too.

I see these all the time on military bases, and have always kind of secretly wanted one. I looked into getting one for a little bit, but they're kind of expensive around here. Good farm/utility trucks, but I'm not sure if I'de want to drive one on the highway for any real amount of time, lots of road noise.

LOL I saw the camo ones all over the US sites. Not my cup o tea either. I wouldn't be using it on the highway much, my commute is 45 mph secondary roads, it would only see highway if I was using it to go get a bike someplace. The aftermarket is pretty good for parts. the US is getting brand new units and some states are starting to make them road legal, if that happens they could start bringing new units here. The 2 dealers I have found here are offering warranty and financing on them so risk is minimal. coming here from Japan they are low miles and rust free as well. anything 1999 and older are permissable and can be registered/titled for road use, they are a street legal SXS basically. Only thing is if I was taking it off road I would have to swap the tires out and the only ones that fit in off road are not DOT so I would have to change em out all the time.

6-8 grand with a 3 month warranty, really tempting and 50 MPG and a 760 lb payload some even have a dump box. But I am really liking the little Van it has the same payload and the floor is the same size as the truck bed. Some tie hooks and you could put your bike in there and head out. Then use it to camp inside while riding. I could see this being how to get to thaw/mid ohio/barber with a smaller funner bike for cheap gas and have a dry place to sleep!

Kewl little things........................::::::

Yep, I saw that one in my googling. I like the off road style better but that one is cool as a lowrider.

Quick mock up of the van: With a roof rack, and lift kit with off road tires it would be a great back woods camper. they are the size of a standard side by side so all but the tightest trails would be accessable with them.

I drove one for an aluminum manufacturer I used to work for. They are really fun to drive, but not for any real travel. The interior is just like a 1980 Toyota Tercel. No sound deadening, no air bags (at least the one I drove). I thought of it as a light duty farm vehicle. The one I drove never left the plant property.

I was in Japan a few months ago and saw these all over the place. Of course they don't look as freakishly small over there as they would here.
I did look into buying one when I got back home. Seems that you can pick up one with low mileage for fairly cheap.
I wish Japan would ship KEI cars over here. I would buy a Honda N-one in a heartbeat.

I live in Barbados and these are everywhere here. Suzuki one called Super Carry, and the Daihatsu one called the Hijet. Very reliable.

Cool. I can get all the major japanese brands. And any model. Just have to ask. I know they are small and noisey but my 15 min commute and other ideas would make these things just fine. We have a suv for real trips etc. This would be my little toy to play with on the cheap. I am going to research the honda you mentioned. Could get one of those cheap I bet. These things could be a great little cheap fun reliable bit of transport off highway and not in a hurry.

I am looking at some pre 1986 Diesel 4x4's. The smaller Euro/Japanese ones. Those JDM are cool though!

The guys bringing in the mini trucks also bring in the diesels and other jdm stuff. Anything 99 and older can come in and be titled in canada due to a loophole in our system. They have diesel hilux and even the suzuki Jimny Aka samuria etc.

I have been looking at some of the Hilux, Land Cruisers, Land rovers, Mercedes G wagons. There is a guy who imports them and they range from 9-12 usually.

I need to find a cheaper one though!

I'LL TAKE IT!!!!!!!

I've owned a few 4WD's over the years, including the Ram I have now. But the funnest truck I've ever had was a Chevy Luv, which is basically an Isuzu Faster. I rolled it down the side of a mountain, so it is no more. It looked a little like this model, but was white and blue.

Is there a difference between a Hilux and the Toyota's they imported to North America?
