Brooklyn CB466F Build

I've had my 75 honda CB400F for 8/9 years and after the head started leaking a bit and also finally finding an original YRS Yoshima exhaust I decided to tear into the bike and bore out to 466 along with a lot of other fun things. The bike isn't quite done yet and I have a link http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=105027.0 to the build in the sohc4 honda forums but I feel I'll get more "cafe" love here.

I don't have any photos when I first got the bike but it wasn't exactly stock by any means so I didn't feel bad tearing into it. Back 7 years ago I decided to put a front end of a 550 on along with 550 bottom triples and CBX top triple along with dual disks. I also made the rear hump with integrated tail/blinkers as you couldn't find anything even 7 years ago. It's still holding up although the seat fell off a shelf while the bike was apart a few months ago and cracked the paint. oh well, gives the bike character.

Below are photos from right before I tore into it and throughout the build. The body work will all remain what I had before but it'll be a different beast.

  • 466 pistons from eBay
  • new bronze guides from TTR
  • new stock valves
  • stage 2 porting by MRieck
  • all new gaskets, guides, seals, anything rubber inside the motor
  • TTR cam chain tensioner
  • TTR oil cooler mount and adapter (need oil cooler once I get it all sorted and running)
  • HD cam chain
  • HD valve springs
  • all new bearings
  • stock carbs bored by rick denoon
  • tach plug
  • start plug
  • Yoshima Exhaust ceramic coated flat black!!
  • new 550 fork legs
  • dyna 5ohm coils
  • acewell speedo/tach
  • updated controls
  • updated and cleaned up wiring harness
  • stock cam for now, will upgrade in the future when I can afford hardening the lifter surfaces
  • new nissen master
  • new clip-ons
  • front rotors thinned and drilled
  • swingarm rebuild by hondaman
  • updated fuse box
  • new reg/rectifier
  • powder coat various bits a pale gold
  • works performance rear shocks
  • progressive fork springs
  • a lot more I just can't remember right now...

Bike before

Bike right after getting the Yoshima ceramic coated (never really rode it with the yoshima yet as I didnt rejet before tearing into the bike)

The infamous Yoshima exhaust. Better than Yoshimura? I think so... I had to make my own baffle as the original was rusted through and just fell apart.

drilled and thinned 550 rotors

fun parts

powder

dual disk mounted. both rotors are now the weights of 1 stock rotor

late last year

new APE HD cylinder studs!

engine build

Mike Rieck head

getting there...

more progress...

headlight ears are nice and small, which will bring them in closer to the triples for a tight compact look. I wanted to use the stock headlight bucket but it was too wide

I ended up trimming them down to fit, then reenforced the inside with about 6 layers of fiberglass

custom wire harness is done, just need to wrap it.

everything works!

this is pretty much where I'm at currently. Getting closer. I just static timed the bike and am attaching a new plastic front fender to the bike which needs some more finess. No worries I have a fork brace of course. The thought of riding without a front fender hasn't crossed my mind since the first time I took the ender off years ago and got caught in a rain storm. I swear anybody that doesn't have a front fender has never ridden in the rain.

Hopefully will get into the shop later today for more progress.

Trimmed the fender to fit the dual calipers.

Fits nice and tight. I may trim a little or try and lower and hug the front wheel a bit more but that can wait..

Got the wire harness all wrapped up, headers installed, filled with brad penn 30w break in oil, side stand installed and domino push/pull throttle hooked up. Just have a few more things before first start up! Like getting fuel line. The little things.

Thanks man.. Way too close and I'm now leaving for a week or so. Will have to wait a couple more weeks. Anticipation is killing me..

I know the feeling man.
My 400f is just waiting on a seat and then im calling it done.

Long time since posting but the bike is finally together and running amazing. This thing is crazy fast compared to a stock 400f. I'm still dealing with a few carb tuning issues but nothing completely unexpected with a modified engine/carbs/open tuned exhaust.

The engine definitely runs HOT but with some additional carb tuning and an oil cooler ill probably be good.

One thing I'm dealing with is the front end. It's from a 74 cb550k but I replaced the tubes with new cycle xchange which are probably 1/2 inch shorter than stock for some reason so I have a bit of preload on my progressive springs now. I need to measure the oil level exactly but over bumps it clunks on rebound almost as if there is no rebound. Could this happen due the extra preload I have now? Too much oil? Too little? I'm using 10weight and I only weight 150lbs.

Yeah surffly I've been a couple times to matchless. Not always easy for me to get there on Mondays but I will when I can for sure.
