CAFE CREME - BOARD.....TRACKER

Whooopppeeee - frame now welded !!! Thanx to my machine shop guy - big shout out for Stainsbie Engineering here in the UK - cheers Neil.

Entrusting the welding previously to 3 welders who didn't has set me back 12 months ...... no big deal ? It is when I'm 80 in March !

Neil also made up the stainless collars for the headers to the exhaust flanges and is getting them tig welded for me.

When I bought my engine I didn't notice that the seller had removed one of the cam chain tensioner screws - can't get them OEM from Yamaha and haven't been able to find any on Ebay etc. Yep, he's making one of them for me as well.

Excellent news !!! Very happy for you that the welder came through-- We needs some frame pics !

Collecting the frame next week when he's completed the other bits of welding / machining..

I think my "kitchen cupboard knobs" worked out OK.?

Thanx MT,

they wotrked in my head - but needed to see them in place before I convinced myself ??

I offered up a wooden gear knob [ "Cobra" ! ], but it just looked out of place [ ignore the Cobra bit ]. It really did look like I'd just fitted the first thing I found in my spares stash.

Hopefully getting closer to being a roller.

The frame is now fully welded, including a brace that my welder suggested.

Just waiting for the exhaust stubs to be tig welded and then I can bring it back to the garage to finalise the fitting of foot and hand controls. cables, etc. - then it's frame prep and paint !

The brass Munsen clamps arrived to attach the fuel log to the frame. Perfect fit, even though they are metric !

SU has been stripped. cleaned and loosely re-assembled. I think just a light polish .

Frame now back in my garage !!

He's also completed the exhaust collars / retainers - all spot on.

Having to wait for the cam chain tension screw as he has a big maching job on at the moment.... no rush for that though.

Once I got the frame back on the bench and chance to have a good look. I wasn't happy with the rear to top frame junction - had become very messy.

So, the CAD came into play and I contrived this enclosure which I'm more than happy with - looks as if it was originally planned !!

Additionally gives me somewhere to mount the saddle mini coil over damper and maybe some other squitter.

Also I re-evaluated the use of the SU carb ..... looks completely period but would be an absolute nightmare to set up jets, needle, choke slide, etc. Taking the chicken way out and looking at a 22mm Amal Mk1 Concentric which is very simple to set up and spares are readily available at a very reasonable price. The NOS will be a bit of a headache which I might have to swerve.

The final piece of deception - my Edoardo Bianchi engine number plaque has arrived and will be sited on the original Virago eng.# pad secured with blind brass rivets.

Now I have the replacement cam chain tensioner and spring the the P.O. removed [ ?? ] the engine can be jet washed and prepped for the H-D wrinkle black paint ...... just saving up for that [ how muckin futch !!! ]

The Amal Concentric [ 22mm ] has arrived [ one of two ] and I found a brand new Triumph Trophy twin carb stub that I can mod onto another copper [ plumbing ] bend to make up the manifold fitting for the Virago "Y" intake.

I'll use my favourite JB Bond resin putty to attach the copper bend to the Trophy intake stub.

The Concentric is much simpler to set up than the SU and parts [ jets, slides, needles etc. ] are a quarter of the price of SU bits - plus readily available secondhand.

Because the 622 body series is not as popular [ or expensive ] as the 900 series they are much cheaper - I just bought two complete and in good condition for £40. Virtually all parts are available from the continuation Amal company in the UK.

Looking forward to see how you do the intake, I had an amal carb on an old BSA I owned a few years ago and I really liked the way it worked compared to the vaccum carbs from the 70s bikes I usually work on.

And here it is !!! Quite straightforward in the end as I made it similar to the previous SU mount.

The copper plumbing elbow has been resin bonded to the Amal stub manifold and it's all fitted up on the engine with the modified support struts nfrom the SU set up.

There's also enough meat on the Amal stub to drill and tap for the Nitrous fogger nozzle.

That looks the biz.

Thanx MT,

I'm on the look out now for a long velocity stack / bellmouth. Plentiful for the larger 900 series bodies, but a bit thin on the ground for the 600.

I have 6 or 7 velocity stacks for various Webber sidedraught carbs, so I might mod one of them as a new 600 series one from Amal is £65 ............... yes, that was SIXTY FIVE pounds !

The second Concentric has arrived now and I'll strip it and start cleaning / polishing it later today.

A genuine Amal velocity stack for the 600 series Concentric is £65 .......... secondhand if you can find one around £25 - £35.

Chinabay to the rescue - superb quality CNC alloy item - £6.00 delivered [ in less than a week ].

Required minor fettling to the Amal intake as I didn't want to use the grub screws they included for attachment.
